Non OES question about Rally and Luxating Patella

I wasn't sure if this is right to post here or not, but I am a bit devastated and need some input. While I am rather impatiently waiting for our OES puppy, I have been working with our Boston getting ready for our next round of obedience hoping to enter AKC Rally events this summer. In preparation, I took him for his boosters and exam today and learned he has a grade 1 luxating patella on his left rear knee. Vet thinks Rally will be ok, not agility though and that he will eventually need surgery. (setting aside he came from a BYB, I know, I know). I am now uncertain if I should ask our Rocky to do Rally. I don't want to make his condition worse quicker, not sure if the exercise will help though. The Vet doesn't do Rally or competition events so I wanted some input from those of you who do. I would be completely devastated if I did something to make him worse. :?

Thanks,
Sandy

I'm not familiar with the grades of luxating patellas, and what exercise levels are recommended. Thankfully I've never had that issue with one of our dogs. They are much more common in the smaller breeds of dog, similar to how hip dysplasia is more common in the medium to larger breeds. Oddly enough, one of my class students just had her dog injured with that - but it was a traumatic luxating patella, and in a boxer. He's a crazy boy and playing on all this ice we have did him in :( He's on crate rest and then they will try rehab before doing surgery.

However, I can say rally most likely will be OK. As long as he can heel and sit, there are only jumps in Advanced and Excellent - and just one jump per course in Adv, and 2 in Excellent. They are also lower jumps than in obedience. My OES jump 16" (the max height in rally) and Simon my basset jumped 8". And then the broad jump is double the high jump.

We have several dogs who are in rally classes here who are doing it because they are surgically repaired for various ortho problems and it's a sport they can do.

Good luck!
Thanks Dawn! A Grade 1 is the beginning stage where it pops out very infrequently and the vet really manipulated it to check because I had noticed Rocky "skip" a couple of times while playing in the backyard. As he ages, the grade may increase to the point it pops out very frequently - so somewhere in between, surgery will be needed to keep it in place. It wouldn't be good if he started "skipping" between exercise in a Rally course. I suppose we will proceed with caution through obedience and hope he doesn't get "did in"

He is a very "lively" Boston and I think he misses our beardie too. He was very attracted to the long haired breeds in the waiting room, ignored the short haired.

Would love to see your Bassett, I love that breed too! Thanks again! :clappurple:
