Loves playing in water??

My new little guy, Baxter is obsessed with playing in water. He splashes all of his water out of his water dish---huge mess-- and loves splashing around in the toilets, and is absolutely fascinated with the pool (worries me). I have had 3 sheepies and have never seen anything like this. I was just wondering if anyone else has encountered this? The first thing he does when he wakes up from a nap is run to find water to play in!! He doesn't drink out of the toilet but if he can get to it he hangs over and splashes with his front paws for as long as I will let him. We are in the process of training everyone to make sure the lid is DOWN!! We introduced him to the backyard last weekend and he promptly went to the steps at the pool splashed with his front paws for a minute and walked right in and sat down happily playing by himself. He makes a beeline to it every time the door is open. This worries me because if for any reason he ever got out there by himself (we have kids in and out all day) I am afraid he might get himself in trouble because he is too young to remember where the steps are after he swims out a bit. I am just curious if anyone else has ever encountered this fascination with water from a sheepie. Baley will swim if we are out there but NEVER goes near the pool if we are not. 8O

Drezzie is also a big water dog, as far as swimming goes. And she has been known to sneak into the pool when we were not looking. If we left her on the enclosed deck and were in the yard gardening or whatever, she would entertain herself by sneaking into the pool, the little bugger!! :? Probably won't do that this year because it's getting harder and harder for her to go down the steps into the pool, but when we help her down, she's in heaven!

I think it's good that Baxter is not afraid of the pool, and if he's showing interest in swimming, then you should definitely teach him. Of course, never let him outside near the pool alone, but if he knows how to swim and how to get in and out, it will take some of the worry out of it.

I laughed so hard when I read that Baxter splashes in the toilet water!! What a visual I got!

Our dog Bailey loves water but is not at all excited about the pool. We were told that we should train him to get out of the pool by himself, so we took him out to the middle a few times and made him swim for the steps and get out on his own. I'd suggest that you do the same with Baxter. You might want to stand at the steps with a treat and call him to help him find his way. He'll remember where the steps are - if he can remember how to find every toilet in the house, he can remember where the pool steps are!
We also have a pool in our yard, but it is fenced off from the other 2 yards. Dogs and kids can't get into that yard by themselves...well Ok the kids can now, but they can all swim, it is not really an issue anymore. But Avalon has never been in the pool. When Merlin was small he fell in a few times running around...once the older dog we used to have PUSHED him in  that taught him not to bother her near the pool  We brought Merlin into the pool a few times...he hates it, but I was determined that he knew where the steps were no matter where he fell in. A few weeks ago he was running so much he ran right into the pool...imagine his surprise 8O , he managed to swim to the stairs and get himself out.
We will be doing the same training with Avalon...I just hope she hates the pool as much as Merlin does. I don't relish the thought of dealing with a full coated WET sheepie who has been for a swim!
Too funny! All these sheepies and their pools. Chelsea LOVES the sprinkler and helps me water the lawn, most dogs I have had don't like the hose and think the sprinkler is something to bark at. Not Chelsea, she dances in the sprinkler, gets absolutely soaked, and tries to outrun the oscillating water, back and forth she jumps up and over, back and forth- it's a stitch!

Up.
Ben also loved to play in the toilets and stick his entire head in the two gallon bucket I use for a water dish.

We bought him a wading pool. Best seven bucks I ever spent. Now, a few times a day, he can really get it out of his system. (note avatar)
Thanks for your input! This water thing is quite adorable, and it has become an obession wih him. The wading pool idea is great--didn't think of that with the pool in the backyard, but it might be the answer. I am beginning to think that there is golder retriever or lab genes in there somewhere!! With this one I am really having a hard time with the discipline because everything he does good and bad is so darn cute!!
