Passport Questions

Dh and I both need one and are running into..differences of opinion.

Where it says Parental Information: Is that just for minors, or do they need "My" parents names? As for identification: Does it need to be birth cert. and drivers license or just one? "Have you ever been widowed or divorced?" and then date...does that mean the date I was married before or the date of divorce? That was almost 20yrs ago...how the heck do I remember that.

If I need my mothers maiden name, I'm in trouble. Its something German...not sure of the spelling. As for birth cert. and drivers license...thats a little trickier. My birth cert. spells my name Pamala. My whole life, since I learned how to spell my name was Pamela...and its spelled that way on almost everything, except my birth cert. and my marriage license. Finally, the date of divorce, I think it was the winter...of some year. I'd have to go to the courthouse to find that information..a big cavernous building with hundreds of rooms and its downtown. I hate downtown.

I know it takes time to get passports and it needs to be done asap. If anyone can help, I would owe you, big time.

Yep, they want your parents' info and the date of your divorce or marriage if you're still married. They want an original birth certificate, not a copy. (They send it back).

Another twist is when you travel internationally or anytime you use your passport for identification you will be Pamala.
So If I divorced and remarried, I need the date of my divorce? Does it matter if I misspell my mothers maiden name? 8O And why the heck do they need that???

I should have changed the spelling of my first name, legally, back when I was eighteen, when I found out.
They used to be sticklers, now they are ridiculous. I don't know what they would do if you misspelled your mother's maiden name or got your divorce date wrong, they may not notice. :D
Would your mother's maiden name be on your birth certificate? Maybe they could look up her marriage certificate and find it that way.

I guess always being single has it advantages. I didn't have to come up with all that other stuff. :sidestep:

Lucky me doesn't have to get a passport, thank you Michigan for offering the enhanced driver's license!
When I got my passport about 13 years ago, my employer contacted our Congressman and somehow he was able to expedite it in a matter of days, versus weeks. If you're pressed for time, it might be worth a phone call to a Congressional or Senatorial office.

I think the State Dept. handles passports.
You could call or visit your local branch and ask them.

I didn't go thru any special channels to get mine. Just checked off "expedite" and overnighted paperwork. I had my passport in about 3 weeks.
With the Congressman's assistance, I got mine back in less than a week.

Trust me, it's worth the phone call.

I don't know any of the answers to your questions but I recently found out for Canadians the cost of a passport is going up to $250 bucks! Not happy about that at all.
Just guesstimate a date of your divorce. Nobody is going to check. But don't you have your divorce papers??? That would have the exact date.

Oh yes, original birth certificate and yes, they return it. A passport is a BIG international security deal. There's a lot of trafficking in forged and stolen passports.
Hi Pam,

This is the State Department web site if you are apply for a passport for the first time:

travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_830.html

Remember, if this is your first passport you must appear in person. Many local Post Offices take applications. One very important thing, your birth certificate must be a CERTIFIED original. Usually that means it must have a raised seal on it. No exceptions to this one. It it really quite easy to obtain a passport. This time of the year it should take about two or three weeks for it to come. The closer to summer you wait the longer it will take.

Actually it's not quite so bad :D Currently it's $87 for a regular 5 year passport. That will be going up to $120 after July 1st, but there will also be the new 10 year passport available, $160, which is actually slightly cheaper/year than the current $87 one. There is a $260 one but I believe that is for a 10 year passport from a US or international applicant.
I had troubles doing my passport, too. I was born in Germany and my birth certificate was a couple of lines in german and that was it. I was able to use my US citizens papers. Actually my husband had more problems with his papers. He was born here and the hospital records that we thought were originals, weren't. So we had to get a duplicate birth certificate for him. I forgot to renew my passport, so will probably have to go through all this again!!!
