Show grooming tips

Just a few questions for crufts really.

1. Do you have to pluck ears?
2. How to you groom without taking undercoat out but keep on top of matts?
3. Do you cut fur from between pads?

I know they're silly questions and I may have already asked one or two.. .ive forgotten haha :)

Also whats the difference between a benched show and an unbenched show?

Thanks

oh crumbs Sam you are asking the wrong person here gal! :wag: :go:
I pluck the ears at least one day, maybe two before the show. If you pluck the same day, the dog will likely be shaking their head too much in the ring and that would not be good.

I also trim the pad fur the day or so before so it's Caitlyn has as much grip on the show matts as possible. I trim her nails at the same time so her toes will look their best and she won't 'click' around the ring.

I'm curious about these things too!
I pluck ears about a week before - same reason - otherwise you get a dog too busy shaking their head to gait well.

Feet - I trim the hair around the pads at least a couple days before the show, and do nails for the last time then too. I want a couple days just in case I snip a pad or web space (I never have, but afraid it would happen!). If you do, and your dog has a limp from it, you will be excused from the ring....not good!

Grooming - nice line grooming all the way to the skin, and done in a nice precise way so you aren't pulling out coat. Take your time, be methodical working your way row by row across all parts of the dog. If you come to a mat, pick at it, then brush, and don't move on until it is smooth and perfect.
I use my wide tooth comb as my "checker" on legs, etc when done - my way of making sure I haven't missed anything. If I find something, I go back and pick and brush, then recheck.

Benched vs unbenched - in a benched show your dog must be present and in their assigned "bench" for the show hours - it will state somewhere in your material the times the dogs must be there. Unbenched means you only need to have your dog there for their ring time.
You still need to get rid of some of the undercoat so the new coat comes through. Some areas you need to take out to slightly shape your dog as he don't have a lot at he mo but will help you out a crufts
