Spinning sheepie fluf

:wag: Hello. Has anyone every tried spining their sheepie's fluf/hair? I am going to be starting to spin after xmas (not that I know what I am getting for xmas!) I will be using a drop spindle. The lady that supplies the equipment reconded dog hair wouldn't be any good but didn't really seem to know what an old english flufalump was. I have been saving all my brushings since we had Sprocket(well, clean ones). He will have a trim when the weather turns summer like (if it does next year). Any advice greatly recieved. I knit my own 40's + 50's 4ply garments so just thought my own sheepy jumper would be really different. Allyson.x :tea: :)

I saved Chewie and sibling Martha's hair - for about 4-5 yrs. I had it spun by a small commercial company. They did need to blend it with wool to work right in the machines. It needed the crimp in the wool to hold together. But I have heard if you spin it by hand you can do 100% dog hair.
I have a whole box of spools...just need to decide what to make now. I do have a past thread on here - from a couple yrs ago when I had it done - with photos!
And - it was wool from one of our own sheep, so it really was OK that we had a blend. If I would have had to add in a strangers sheep's wool, I likely wouldn't have been as cool with it.
Good luck!
Thanks for that. Whilst "down the pub" earlier on a chap was talking about his sheep's feet,me being nosey picked up on the fleece bit of the conversation and joined in. Now I am going to be given a Bulgarian drop spinndle from one chap,a fleece from the farmer and a bag of Jacob sheep fibre. I will be kept busy. I wondered if dog fur was suitable for spinning or if would need blending. From what I have gatherd sheep fibres have hooks that bind it together whilst dog hair is hollow and smooth. I will keep you updated on progress. Do you remember what the heading and section your wool post was under? make it easier to look for if I can go back that far. x

A lot of people have told me about a lady locally that spins sheepie fur but nobody knows who she is.
surly its the undercoat that's spun? As a groomer who is covered in hair all day, normal hair is itchy and tickles.
I would love to help out this mysterious lady who spins
Friend spun my sheepdog and Great Pyrs hair and then wove several items for me. Alas she is gone so can't ask her more questions. Yes, it is the undercoat. Clippings will not work.
Sounds interesting. Id love to have a jumper made out of Bloo LOL :D

Don't let them convince you that OES hair can't be spun. Anything can be spun, including belly button lint. :rimshot:

Seriously. I've successfully spun OES hair on both drop spindle and spinning wheel and it's turned out quite nicely. No need to blend the hair with wool unless you are making items that require elasticity and wearability, such as sweater cuffs, socks or hats. For clothing items it is best to blend with a sheep's wool of similar length and texture as the hair you're spinning.

You can spin dog hair clippings but uncut undercoat is softer and handles more like wool. Brushings from a pin brush or slicker work best. If your dog is fairly clean before brushing to harvest the undercoat, there's no need to wash the hair prior to spinning.

These are two of the bears that I spun the yarn and knitted clothing for. The yarn is 100% OES hair spun on a wheel but the concept is the same on a spindle.

PM me if you need help, I'll be happy to share.

Thank you. Got to get the hang of using the drop spindle-it seems to have a mind of it's own. It's easy to make lumpy, bobbly yarn!! I don't have a smooth "top" of fibre to use,it's a stragley "rolag".Think I may gently brush it first, that may help.x
A nice top will spin better than a rolag. Try using two dog slicker brushes if you don't own hand cards.

Once you learn how to spin better, your yarn will be smooth and even. Then you'll have trouble going back and making a nice "art yarn" that's slubby and uneven.
There is a lady in town that spins dog hair. I've been saving Lily's hair since she was a baby to do this!
We are away at in-laws for a longish weekend so going armed with dog brush, spindle etc plus Sprox, humans and my knitting.Hopefully I will make some progres, prob just be trying to stop Sprocket sitting on 86 yearold mum in law. She is a sweetie and my only mum now so very special lady but she will wag a finger in front of Sprox nose saying "go and lay in front of the fire" over and over. Of course he thinks that she is saying "come and sit on me and lick me to death"!xx
