Whats the best grooming technique?

This might sound like a silly question but im going to go ahead and ask.

I comb bloo everyday with a metal comb (line groom) and get out any matts/knots etc. I get piles of fur off him every time. I then go over with my isinis hair brush to get the loose hairs off.
Is the fur that comes out the comb his undercoat? Should i be taking it out? If i dont comb how will i keep on top of the knots?
Im confused...again LLOLL :wag:

The only way it's painless for me when I had Yuki's hair long is... doing what you're doing daily. Daily then it took 5-10 minutes because she was so "matt free" ...otherwise, once a week doing what you're doing but then it took 2 good hours (1 hr each side - 2 sessions). I honestly always wondered the same thing, but I personally don't think you can do any more. I feel like I've tried everything.

With Kobuck, ..who was more to standard, it just took one good brushing (line) once a week and that was just to stay on top of it because he definitely wasn't matted.

So I do think the type of hair they have (how much of an undercoat too) matters, yet is so rarely discussed here. Not sure why .....but it's something that I've always thought when posting and reading some replies on hair. Yuki's hair requires a lot more work (constant matts from just laying down).
Definitely not a good idea to use a comb all over a show dog, and grooming should only be once a week, line brushed with a pin brush (no nubs on the tips).... otherwise you are removing too much undercoat as well as breaking the guard coat. If you don't plan to show him anymore it doesn't matter....
Thanks for the replies! :D
I used to brush bloo weekly but thats when the matts were building which is why i groom him daily to keep on top of his coat.
Which pin brush is best, can i use the ones with the rubber balls on the nibs?
If i cant comb him arent the matts going to keep coming back?

Thanks x
No rubber balls at ends! Just a regular pin brush.

For mats, two ways to attack (at least):

1) carefully use a slicker (best on thick whites that should be thinned out a bit anyway)
2) use fingers to pull hair apart and then carefully brush with pin brush, sometimes slicker is necessary

Comb is a big no-no and the option of last resort. I do use my big butt comb some times once I've loosened the mats up with my fingers. And once I've gone over legs and can get through them with butt comb with no snagging I go over with a greyhound comb (last step before trimming), but only once the legs are predominantly already mat free.

Speaking of, two matted puppies to brush out, oh yay!

Have fun!

I was as well using a comb and then my wonderful groomer who is so supportive and helpful gave me a lesson. Which my other groomer never did. It was eye opening. I was actually hurting Laika and that was why she hated being groomed. My groomer recently order these brushes for me OH my what a difference. Such a doll she gave me the smaller one for free. She said that one is good for the armpits and tight areas. Funny enough she said Laika is really good on the table.
You can the go over the coat for snags with a big comb like others mentioned. I have to say if you can have a groomer take the time to help and show you it only benefits you and her. She knows if I know how to do it right I don't bring her a dog a matted mess.

I made a grooming mistake at the beginning by using a rake on Monty which thinned out his coat. It was good on Buster when he was shedding heavy in his first year but I rarely use it on him now either as it takes out too much of undercoat. He looks thinner than other Newfys because I raked out to much undercoat......oops  We are hoping it will grow back but he is easy to groom and looks nice and sleek.

The first pin brush I had, had the nobs on the end of the pins and short pins, it wasn't doing a good job of keeping Monty's coat mat free. Then I read somewhere to use a pin brush with no nobs as it gets down to the skin where the fur tends to fuse.
None of the local pet stores in our area had nobless pin brushes so I went on line and found one I am really happy with.

I got the "#1 All Systems Ultimate Plastic Pin Brush" made in Germany. It is for fine, long haired dogs. The end of the pins are not sharp and it gets to the skin and the pins are a bit longer than the average pin brush.

I line groom him with the pin brush half an hour to an hour every two days, yet there are still mats somewhere, usually fusing of fur by the skin or small mats. I occasionally use a condo it get a mat but I find it does strip more fur. Monty is not a very thick coat dog so I don't want to strip too much.

I also purchased the coat handler shampoo and conditioner which are good and last a long time as they are diluted. But I hardly ever wash Monty, I find grooming him with the pin brush keeps him clean. The conditioner would help with the fur fusing near the skin if I sprayed it on....The reason I don't is I try to use shampoo and conditioners as little as possible for their health.

I usually end up having to do a head and butt wash once every three weeks. That head gets stinky  it's probably from our hands petting him all the time

By the way, thanks very much for the excellent line grooming lessons on this forum, it has made grooming easier and more pleasurable for Monty. He is not the perfect non wiggly boy yet but he is getting better.
There are a few things you need to be aware of. When showing you need to leave some of the undercoat but you need to let the new coat to come through and get rid of the old dead stuff so its a fine balance due to his age & coat change. Last time we met you are in that funny sort of stage due to his coat being clipped & I think ( this is my view ) its harder to look after as the coat is not short or long ( sort of curly ) and it will Matt so you will have a harder job to manage his coat. When we are at crufts I will show you how to use a comb without taking too much coat out. you have 4 months before crufts so his coat will be in better shape. If you and your mum want to travel to Bedford we can get him groomed & we can go through a few things. It s about 1 1/2 hrs or a bit less from you. if you can pin brush him & come over in Feb or if you are point to the east Anglia show which is not too far from you
Blooboo, first, use the same brush as Spacegirl mentioned. I died all kind and that the only one which safe the coat. When matted, rise the coat and brush. The knot will be dematted. Second, I leave Kessi outside during workday. Since I'm doing that (from augustus) I 've got less knot and her coat is more beautiful! I use a pray as well with a few almond oil inner (20 drop for half liter).
Knot must be moved apart first with your fingers!
Enjoy our grooming time!
I have a couple All Systems brushes but my favorite brand is Hines. They have several sizes and pin lengths. They are from the UK. Bad news is they quit making those brushes a while back. We look for their brushes any time we go in a pet shop and buy whatever they have.

Rumor has it they are going to start making them again which may be only wishful thinking.
I have a pin brush and a few different metal combs, and I feel like my pin brush does absolutely nothing for Eevee's fur. I usually start with the widest toothed one, and work my way down to smaller ones if I need to. The pin brush really just goes over the top of any knots, no matter how small they are. She doesn't like when I use the pin brush either, which is weird. If I'm combing she will lay down and even sleep, but as soon as I pick up the pin brush she gets all weird and antsy.

That is exactly what happens to bloos fur. When i use the pin brush, yeah it makes him look fluffy, but he still has the matts underneath.
I have been using the pin brush every two days and using the comb on any knots. I used to get loads of fur from him, but know i hardly get any fur coming out. I suppose thats good...and his coats getting much thicker and harsher! Which is harder to manage! :twitch:
I get a lot of fur off of Eevee with the comb, but I think that's probably also due to coat transition. She's changing slowly but surely!
But yeah, even when I would do the line grooming with the pin brush, I'd do a whole line, without the brush ever tugging or anything, and then check it to make sure I didn't miss any and it's like I didn't even brush her. With the comb, I get none of that. The only place any fur really comes out any more is on her back towards the rear, the rest doesn't even really get matted now.
