Looking for an OES for our family

Good Morning,

My name is Olivia and my husband and I have been in contact with a few breeders that we have been able to locate in Oregon and Washington looking for an OES for our family. We aren't looking for a puppy, instead we would love to adopt a young adult-adult OES, possibly a dog who wasn't purchased or was kept with intent for breeding/showing, or a retired show or breeding guy or gal. We have neighbors who moved here to Southern Oregon with their OES from Wisconsin and our boys love this guy so much! We were able to baby sit him a few times and he even stayed the weekend with us so our neighbors could go out of town and we absolutely fell in love.

This guy is 5, a very big boy, but was so wonderful with our boys, always kept an eye on them, would go fetch them from one room and push them back into where he wanted to be, it was adorable. We loved the breed and temperament, the ability to go from playful with the boys to a snuggle buddy for me and my husband, was so perfect for our family. We would love to find an OES to join our family as our forever friend, we have no other furry friends, so whomever we adopt would be spoiled and loved. Below I have included more information about our family so if anyone has heard of or has an OES needing a wonderful family home we would love to be considered if the temperament fits.

My husband and I have 3 boys, ages 6, 4, and 1. We live in Southern Oregon in a home that we own. We have a fully fenced backyard, live on a quiet dead-end street in a wonderful family neighborhood. My husband has a great job and is moving up quickly, I get to be a stay-at-home mommy so I am home all day to give lots of love and attention to any dog we take in. I go on a 45-60 minute walk every morning before the boys are up and would love a pal to enjoy it with me if they wish. We have a wonderful and very reputable vet in Medford named Steven Bernard at Medford Animal Hospital who says he has worked with a few dozen OES in his 25 years of practice.

We are an active, very close family, we love to be outside but we also love to snuggle up on the couch so we would love a friend who wants to be where we are and can enjoy even our lazy Sunday movie days. The boys are in school 5 days a week so when they are gone it is just me and the littlest at home and it's very mellow so the pup would be able to have some quiet time to relax daily :)

Thank you all for any help you can give!

If you go back to the title page of this site and scroll down you'll see a section for rescues. Lita Long is the Greater Portland rescue contact.

gpoesc@gpoesc.com

Most rescues have a policy about adopting out to a family with small children because of the unknown history of the dog and it's reaction to smalll children. Maybe you'll need to wait a few years, make certain your children are dog sensitive, know how to react around them.....then it will be time. Your life is a bit hectic with a one year old.....hold off a bit if you can. In mean time get in contact with Lita and start the process.
Thank you! We had a chocolate lab whom was my husband and I's first baby, he passed away about 11 months ago from a heart failure. Our boys were wonderful with him, and miss him dearly as he was their best buddy. We would never take on an animal if we weren't sure we could provide a stable home for them, or if our boys weren't ready. I do see your point though and appreciate it greatly! :)
I hope you find your OES soon :D

I have had 2 rescue OES over the years and have thought of them very special :hearts:
and they tug at our heart strings

but of course all my OES are special :hearts: no all OES are special :hearts:

Well, if your kids were not bowled over by a lab, an OES should be actually, pretty similar. We have labs too. ;)

There is a real active club out there in the PNW - I would get into contact with them, and go meet and greet. Also, our OES National Specialty is out there October, 2014, so we will be invading your area!

October 17 - 24, 2014 (Friday - Friday)
2014 OESCA National Specialty
Albany, Oregon

Also - a show with a somewhat local club:
January 11, 2013 (Friday)
OESC of Greater Seattle
In Conjunction with the Western Washington Cluster Weekend
Puyallup, Washington
Puyallup Fair and Events Center, Puyallup, WA
Conformation and Sweepstakes

Good luck!
Welcome from washington state! The seattle oes club is extremely active. If you live in oregon you may want to talk with a club closer to you. Although many in the seattle club are wonderful people.

Here is the club for Portland, Oregon http://www.gpoesc.com/index.html
Thank you Dawn! Yes, our chocolate lab was a bundle of un-ending energy and we loved him so much but we never got the kind of snuggles and "leaning" hugs that we got while babysitting Paw (the OES)! We weren't sure if it was just him or if that was the OES temperment and as soon as we found out after talking with a lot of breeders and OES owners that they tend to be that way a lot, that really did it for us! Our lab was a good boy but he wasn't affectionate like that..

I was in portland for this past weekend and there was a show going on that a couple of the breeders we were in touch with went to, but I am terrified to drive in traffic and with my husband in a meeting all day I couldn't bare to drive to it (about an hour away) :( He tried to sneak out early so we could go meet everyone but he got roped into helping set up for the big Christmas party (reason we went). I have been in touch with a couple of the more reputable breeders out here and they actually suggested this site to me! We figured the more we got it out there the more likely we would be to find an OES that would love our home and our boys :)

If we haven't found our furry friend by then I can assure you I will be at those shows!
Thank you Annastacia! Your name is beautiful by the way, I've never seen it spelled that way, I love it..makes me wish we had a girl! I have been in touch with the portland club, they have a few rescues but none of which have been around kids that they know of and none of the foster homes have any children to test the situation. They have suggested reaching out to as many organizations as we can and that most of the breeders have it in their contracts that if the family is unable to keep the dog for whatever reason that the dog goes back to the breeder first so we have been in touch with as many as we can find that are registered and active in the OES community.

The Snowdowne breeders (most contact with Colleen) have been especially helpful and they are located in Washington too! They don't have or know of anyone looking to place any! We will wait patiently and hope that a wonderful OES comes our way :)
Thank you!

I think the seattle rescue has 2 oes right now. Unless they both got adopted. Aren't the snowdowne dogs beautiful?!

I placed my OES (Lily) littermate Jack through the seattle rescue. http://oesrows.org/ If anything put in an application and keep calling!! Most of the rescue people also show and are part of the seattle oes club.
you are wonderful! Thank you!! I will check out the site and put in an application for seattle as well! Yes, Snowdowne does have some really beautiful dogs! We had our fingers crossed after seeing her website but no luck, Colleen has been so helpful though!
Hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas! We just wanted to check in and say hello, we are still looking for a wonderful OES to join our family :-)
Merry Christmas! I have my fingers crossed for you. :crossed:
Good luck and keep looking :)
Happy New Year too!
Good luck in your search! We got a retired show and breeding girl when she was 6 years old. It is a really great way to get a very well behaved and good tempered adult dog. She lived with the breeder's young children and she loves children and is wonderful with them. :crossed: :crossed:

Here she is meeting some young folk:
Happy new year! Be patient. I know its hard to wait but when the right sheepie comes along you will know it!
Thanks for the wonderful comments everyone! And David, that is so wonderful! I hope we can find a good one like you did, our boys got to play with our buddy down the street again today and boy do we love that guy! Can't wait for a new familly member of our own :)
We recently got to speak with a purebred dog rep. in the Washington area and she handles rescues for Wash, Ore, Idaho, and Nor. Cal and said she thinks we would be a great home and will keep me updated on any they get in that may fit! EEK! Hopefully sooner than later :)
A cute story I saw on Facebook and I thought I'd share, it's not a sheepie but it's still very cool!

A Dog's Purpose?
(from a 6-year-old).

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa , and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker 's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ''I know why.''

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live.

He said,''People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?'' The Six-year-old continued,

''Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.''

Live simply.

Love generously.

Care deeply.

Speak kindly.

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.

Take naps.

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Be loyal.

Never pretend to be something you're not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

That is just lovely. I needed that today, thank you!
Our dear OES friend is moving away! We are so sad, we love him so much but his mom and dad have decided after their trip to Europe recently that they want to be international and are moving in a month. They have only been here in Oregon for a couple months, and we will dearly miss getting to babysit our buddy. :'(
I assume they are bringing their OES with them to Europe?
Yes :( he is very spoiled and there is NO way (rightfully so!) that they would leave him behind, he is too cute and when we did have him while they were on vacation his momma had us skype with her once a day so she could say "Hi" to him! haha
Well congrats on the good news w/the rescue! My fingers are crossed for you!!!!!
Still looking, hoping, and wishing for an OES for our family! Thank you :)
