Anyone in center city?

Hi everyone -- I've been reading the board for a while because I've been thinking about getting a sheepdog and I've learned so much about what it is like from all of your stories. It sounds like a real trip and I love all the pictures. I am wondering whether anyone on this board lives in or near center city Philadelphia because I'd really like to meet some sheepies in person to get a better sense of what the dogs are like. The last ones I saw were a long time ago. So, for example, if there's a regular place you take your dog for fun (like Schuylkill River Park), maybe I could come meet you and see your dog. I am so bummed that I this did not occur to me before the Philly picnic. . . Anyway, just an idea. Let me know if you're up for it. . .

Hi Valerie,

Welcome and glad you decided to join us. I'm not from the Philly area but on the West Coast but just wanted to say "hi". I believe there's a few members here from your area...you might want to check the members list located at the top of the page and see where everyone is from or check their avatar pics that also says their location. Good Luck!

There are a couple of people from New Jersey that are pretty close to Philly otherwise, there are a few of us over here in Central PA.
Let me know if you're ever making a trip down to the capitol!

Hi Valerie,
Welcome to the forum! I'm from a bit north of Philly in the Lehigh Valley area. I haven't seen any other sheepies around me, but I'm sure there here somewhere.

Drezzie is the light of our lives. Meeting her wouldn't be of much help to you, I'm afraid, because she's getting older (12 in August) and is slowing down quite a bit due to hip dysplasia and arthritis. I also don't know of any parks or area in/around Philly where dogs are welcomed.

Chad Roeger is the one who put the Philly picnic together. Maybe he can give you more guidance. One thing I can guarantee you - if you're willing to put in the work that it takes to keep their coats nice, and just love and care for them unconditionally, you will NEVER regret getting an OES.

Chris
Thanks. I've enjoyed reading your stories about Drezzie. There is actually a wonderful dog park 2 blocks from where I live plus lots of fields and woods nearby that are dog friendly. I can definitely promise unconditional love and I am happy to brush daily plus I know of an experienced groomer in my neighborhood. I have never heard a sheepdog's bark though, so I am kind of curious to hear that. Abd I wonder if a sheepdog would be lonely in a household of just me and my very tolerant senior cat. Do they require more people or animals to have a happy life? I would plan on lots of social time at the very popular dog park (once the vaccines kick in, of course). I welcome comments and suggestions. . .
Sheepies are definitely BIG people lovers - they are their most happy when they are with their uprights. The number of uprights in a house is not as important as the love they're given. They socialize well, when trained as such, but they don't NEED other animals around to be happy.

Drez's bark has dwindled as she has aged. But it was always one of the neatest things about her. When she'd hear the doorbell, she'd howl - literally! And she has different barks for different occasions - a "little dog yip" when she's playing, a deep growl and bark when she's in protective mode, a medium happy bark when she's running around. Her main bark now, though, sounds very raspy, almost like she's losing her voice. Her "old lady" bark, we call it.

Sounds like you've done your homework and have planned well, but believe me - there will still be surprises. Just like raising kids - they don't come with a handbook. :? But just like raising my kids - I wouldn't have missed it for the world!!

Good luck, and keep us posted! 8)

Excellent idea. I would love to. Perhaps others here will join us too. Let's coordinate closer to the date. :D
