Adaptive Teamwork

As a retired person I usually set an alarm only 3 days a week, once for church and twice to meet retired friends for breakfast. My retired wife lets me sleep as late as I chose the other mornings, i shoud say, as late as the boys allow.

I don't know what triggers "It's time for Dad to get up" but they come in as a team.

For a long time Winston's exuberance was the first one to try to get me out of bed. (I need to point out our bed is about 3' high). He would jump his front feet as far onto the bed/me as he could reach, panting and carrying on, full of joy and wanting me to get our day going. He would usually be met with some groans, grunts and a roll to the middle of the bed out of harm's way of paws and claws. Dex would be peacefully sitting next to the bed, watching and waiting (or the one that put Winston up to it). I would be slow to get out of bed, knowing the increased puppy assault that would begin immediately. Sometimes I would bury into the covers and sleep some more, physical avoidance?

For about the last week Dexter has been the first to wake me. He gently jumps his front feet up and just quielly smiles at me, no panting or pawing. Reminiscent of my wife waking our upright sons on a weekend morning; soft voice "it's a beautiful day and I would like to enjoy it with you if you're ready to get up." I will smile back, rub his head as he lays it on my chest and pull the covers back to get up. Dex will jump down to give me room to get up then the assualt begins by Winston who has been waiting in ambush!

It's impossible to get upset with anyone who is so overjoyed at seeing you even if their joy is often painful!

They have worked out a system.

Harry is my alarm clock, er, snooze alarm. After being taken out for first call, he'll wake me up and together we go to DH's larger and now vacant bed and snuggle together and catch more zzzzz's.
