Americans prepare to be shocked!

You guys aren't gonna believe this.
I'm Lisa's age (or near enough, yep 21) and I'd never tasted pumpkin pie. 8O

We had the work Thankgiving lunch that I mentioned in another post yesterday and one of my work colleagues who is a great pastry cook made pumpkin pie. The one with rum in it. Well I have to say YUM!! I hadn't really expected to like it as I didn't realise it would be so yummy as I expected to be able to taste the pumpkin flavour more.

Being a purist about her baking she made it from scratch, pastry and all, not even tinned pumpkin. It was over 102 degrees so making the pastry was an interesting experience, she had to keep taking it out of the oven and pushing the pastry back up the sides of the dish. And putting the oven on was lunacy really.

It was a huge meal with 10 people contributing food so there was some pie left over. We all voted to let our American colleague keep it to take home. Boy was he happy about that. :D

 Yep, gotta have the rum!! Some folks flavor the whipping cream instead of the pumpkin custard......some years I've done both and dabble more in the after dinner coffee........ 8)
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I don't like pumpkin pie. It is un-American. But just can't eat it.

Why not? Does Lisa put wine in her pumpkin pie???? :sidestep:
We are HUGE fans of pumpkin pie here in the Midwest (suburb of Chicago). My parents are from the East Coast (Maine, New Hampshire), so we grew up with pumpkin pie for every Thanksgiving and Christmas dessert. But for some reasons, none of our cousins in Northern California eat it, and it's not in their family tradition.

I also make a wickedly good pumpkin cake, from scratch of course, with buttercream frosting. Mmmmmmmmmm.

Hahahah probably. :sidestep:
We use pumpkin as a savoury vegetable. I've never, ever had pumpkin in a dessert and Lisa most likely hasn't either.
We bake it with roast meat or we mash it with butter and add some pepper.

No Darcy, never had pumpkin loaf. Pumpkin brulee nope, never even heard of it and spice pumpkin latte is a joke, right?
Starbucks has a spiced pumpkin latte. It is super yummy !!!!!!!! Pumpkin loaf is like banana bread. I use it savory as well. Butter and salt is my fav!!
You are crazy!!

We grow our own pumpkins, and make pie from them (none of that sissy canned stuff!).
When my kids were in their teens, they would come home from school, pick a pumpkin and nuke it...then mash it and make a pie without the crust (a custard)...and eat it ALL. It was their after school snack ;)

I had my birthday fall on Thanksgiving here, so I made pumpkin pie instead of a cake...SO much better!
Pumpkin pie is delicious as you now know. Pumpkin roll is very good too.

Maybe when you visit next year, you can sample all the different pumpkin treats :hearts:

You might start with our Pumpkin festival in Milton West Virginia. They have pumpkin pretzels, fudge and ice cream as well as traditional pumpkin favorites.
Pumpkin ice cream. :cow:
Aussies who never tasted pumpkin pie would all start retching at the mention of it.
I remember a restaurant outside Denver made a lovely pumpkin custard with cranberries it it......I loved it and duplicated it, but in reviewing their menu on line these days I see no mention of it. Too bad!

Of for sure you'll have to whip up some pumpking bread next fall.....don't forget the walnuts! Also good with orange peel in it. Don't tell people what's in it..the spices in it will disguise the pumpkin flavor.......then you can spring it on them!!
