SPAM Email Rant!

Do you ever feel like you're the only one who understands the best thing to do with a SPAM e-mail is just delete it?

In the last hour, more than 50 people have hit REPLY TO ALL to ask everyone on the National Flute Association list (which is huge) why they got a SPAM email! I got one actual SPAM, and everything else is "reply all" from recipients saying "did anyone else get this?"

Several folks have tried to gently tell everyone to just stop replying and delete the e-mail. And while I would love to do the same, I refuse to add ANOTHER e-mail to the melee.

Hopefully all of us here are savvy enough to just delete any e-mail that looks like spam or phishing. And if you hadn't thought of it before, please, please, PLEASE take my gentle guidance and just delete the $@($#! thing. For Pete's sake, DON'T ask hundreds of people "What is it? Where did it come from? Does anyone know about this?" And my favorite, the reply to all with "How do I make all these 'reply all' e-mails stop?"

:headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

(And yes, I do see the irony in ranting on a forum to several thousand people - but I'm not cluttering up your mailbox with it!)

I agree! The worst is when somebody presses the "sent to all ____ employees button" and then people hit reply to all. Days of irrelevance!

Owwww the dreaded 'reply to all' button. Many and employee has been caught out saying something they shouldn't and accidentally hitting reply all.

I hardly ever use it. It's too annoying as you've mentioned.
When I get spam, its usually something saying that I've inherited a billion dollars from a prince or something. I read them, laugh, and delete.
I get hundreds and hundreds of spams per day; I've had to turn on tight filtering with auto-deletion to get the number down to a manageable 30 per day.

May I share your story with a few thousand of my closest email friends from around the globe, especially Nigeria?

Hehehehehee. Shame it only serves to encourage them. :(

By all means, do.

Incidentally, I'm still waiting for the millions to be transferred from that Nigerian diplomat's Swiss bank account. Mine seems to have been emptied somehow! :cow:
Learn to use your email client properly, particularly the filtering as Ron has pointed out, it amazes me how so many people don't bother to take 15 seconds to use the facility you all have on your machines and your email providers filtering facilities.
My filter is actually on the oes.org server... Then the 30 can get weeded out by the client but frequently misclassifies ham as spam. :-( So I just delete the spam mails off the server before I download to my PC. What a pain. I hate spammers.

My filter works pretty well. Like I said, I only got one actual spam. All the rest are the "reply to all" folks who are (so helpfully  ) trying to figure out the source. The "conversation" is down to a few die-hards who just can't let it go.

:headbang:
Once you have had a reply to the spam just filter contents matching parts of title and body contents to the repliers list.

Most people who use the reply all feature will be of a lazy type who also mega quote all the posts and most likely top post in replies too ( a pet hate of mine)

The big problem is educating the muppets out there!
