Marking!

Well, I was expecting this to happen, as Ramsey is not neutered, we are waiting until he is fully grown. However, while I expected him to mark OUTSIDE, I NEVER expected him to mark inside.

He is 10 months today, this started about 2-3 weeks ago, outside. Saturday, took him and his sister to Petsmart. He's been in there MANY TIMES, including the previous week, marked just about every corner/shelf he could. Went to the in-laws yesterday, he walked in, marked a fake plant in the house within about 2 minutes of being there, went to go do it again in another spot (another dog was previously there that morning).

What on earth do I do to stop him from marking INSIDE A HOUSE! Or inside anywhere!! Aside from neutering.

Monty did it twice at my mother in laws at around 10 months, they also had a younger puppy in the house. Not sure if he was marking or excited, but since then before Monty goes in the house I walk him around the block so he is all peed out before entering the house.
He hasn't done it in he house since, but marks still on outside walks.
I have very limited experience in this and I am sure others will have better advice to give.
Hope he gets better soon.
Pee'd out?

Impossible........ they can call on more pee at any time from another dimension :-)
Neutering won't fix the problem. Was at a rescue get together in IL last month, most of the dogs there were rescues, so neutered, and guess what? At least a half dozen of them (that I caught, who knows how many others?) marked the tunnels!    That doesn't count the one that lifted his leg on my puppy 8O OK, so maybe she was following him too closely ;-)

Cindy was there with Teddy, may have been one of the few intact males there, but he didn't mark anything he shouldn't because... :rimshot: ...she was watching him :P

So, put a leash on Ramsey any time you take him in somewhere new and do not take your eye off him. The minute he starts to lift his leg, correct him (verbal uh-uh or something like that and a light collar pop should do it) and sweetly take him outside and see if he wants to lift his leg there. If he does, praise. He should catch on pretty quickly. A habit you definitely want to nip smartly in the bud. The more times he does it, the harder it becomes to convince him it's not acceptable.

You can't pee out a male. They must have a reserve bladder just for marking.

Indeed, inside you watch like a hawk and quickly and loudly stop the leg before it gets half cocked (yes, you can read their mind--watch them and learn the presignals) and get that guy outside, ASAP then praise sweetly when he does his duty. If you can't trust him, get him a belly diaper for visits to the inlaws.
When lily's brother jack came to me, he had a marking issue. He marked 3 times in my house. I yelled NO! clapped my hands loudly right above his head and took him outside. He never marked in anyone's house again.
My two do quite a lot of air pees (lift their legs but nothing comes out) at the end of their walks when they have run out of pee to mark :D
8O Years ago (you know back in the dark ages) my neutered at a young age dalmo marked inside. 8O
He was about 4 years old. We had moved house and left the dogs with a friend for the day until the truck had collected and then delivered all our furniture.
As bozo ran excitedly through the new house he stopped to quickly cock his leg on a cedar chest (mine not new to him). I shrieked at him in shock and horror, he got a look of shock on his face which I interpreted to mean 'I don't know know why I just did that'.
The neighbours told us later that the previous occupants kept there small dogs in that room and I realised there were some stains in the carpet (dog pee).
He never did it again. I always figured it was a combination of excitment and being off lead around pee smells. I'd be making it quite clear that the behaviour is unacceptable and keeping him on leash to faciltitate that.
I may cause a bit of controversy now, I don't actually stop my dog peeing, it is the most natural of things for them to do, he never pee's in the house, never feels the need to mark internal territory, why ?? I haven't a clue maybe because he's allowed to do what dogs do so to speak ie communicate with their bladder and nose out in the (tame) wild maybe he is in a happy state of balance?

I do sometimes think we try to force human traits onto while removing animal instincts on our beasties, and we all know just how wonderful humans are!

Obviously a lot of people won't accept the above and you are all free to educate me otherwise.....
Haha, he definitely DOES NOT run out of pee on his walks, that's for sure. I will absolutely try keeping him on a leash and telling him no when he does it. He hasn't at home, just seems to be new areas, where dogs were, inside. Almost like housebreaking him over again. He can mark where he wants outside, but inside is just not happening.

He gets his leg up so high, he's almost doing a split, like a ballerina, haha. I'll put a tutu on him and embarrass it outta him!!
I have 5 male dogs, 2 intact...NO marking allowed. It's a behavior, and can pretty easily be worked on for most dogs. Especially the larger breeds. Now little toy breeds - they are hideous marking little machines. :(

If he peed repeatedly while out shopping - this is totally your fault for not being attentive and nipping that one RIGHT away. I'd be pretty sure that other dogs had peed there before - but training is a wonderful thing and they can learn some self control and not mark on top of it when indoors.
This just started! As soon as I have saw him doing it, I stopped him right away. Hopefully that will end it inside! I'm taking him back to Petsmart this weekend to practice! LOL. Perhaps in his tutu!

Take pictures :-)
