Raw Bones and Clean Teeth

In June Monty had a check up at the vet and he said I need to brush Monty's teeth as they were really brown stained with tartar and shouldn't be this bad at 10 months.
I went into worry mode thinking that he might get tooth ache and of all the dental work he might have to have.

I immediately went to a local pet store and asked for teeth cleaning products.
The owner is a really helpful guy. He had his golden retriever at the store and he showed me her teeth. She is 6 years and no tartar. He said he hadn't been brushing her teeth but giving her raw bison bones to chew. He recommended the bones because they are more effective than brushing and the dogs love the bones.

I have been giving them either a large knuckle bone or rib bone once a week sine then. They get so excited and their teeth are pretty much white.

There is of course is the worry that they could hurt there teeth or choke.

One time they had a massive rib bone each.
At dinner time Monty was getting really frustrated as he didn't seem to be able to eat his kibble and he kept batting his face with his paw.
I opened his mouth and the rib bone had got wedged across the back his mouth between his back teeth. He must have been biting through the bone and it broke in the back of his mouth and got wedged. :?
I had to put my hand all the way into the back of his mouth and pull it out. He must have had it wedged there for at least an hour, but we saw no signs of discomfort, only when it embedded his eating.

This hasn't stopped us giving them bones, but we keep an eye on them. The risk out weighs the pleasure and the results they get.

Of course never cooked bones! Raw bones, smaller raw bones are easily chewed and swallowed. Chicken backs and wings were popular here. Friend gives her Pyrs pork neck bones once a week. Their Sunday morning treat. If I gave a big bone, it was a femur with the head......the "knuckle" in many bones. Anything smaller and they would eat it but it wouldn't break into small enough bits. Raw rib should have been OK.
We buy marrow bones at our grocery and freeze them. They get them every night after dinner and their dental checkups are perfect. We wouldn't give them every day except that now they are spoiled and won't let us rest until they have them.
