Lure Coursing OES!

Last weekend we entered and had a blast with the GTCAHC (Greater Twin Cities Afghan Hound Club) doing lure coursing. They have a fabulous setup and always a good time.
Lure coursing for non-sighthound dogs is a great new sport - any dog can try it! They accept any AKC registered breed or PAL/mixed breed registered dog, so it's fun for everyone.

Chewie has his 1st title (CA - Coursing Ability), with 3 qualifying runs.
Bond never had tried it, as they need to be 1 year old at a minimum to do it. Seeing he turned 1 yr the weekend before the test, we entered and went up to it.

Bond loved it!

He ran his 600 yards in 1 minute, 9 seconds and easily passed :high5:

I also ran Chewie because he loves it...

He was not in running shape (in "show" condition, and the heaviest he has ever been in his life - 74#), but still did a nice job running it in 55 seconds.

Here the boys are with their ribbons. This picture just cracks me up, I think they are on alert, one checking each direction!

Chewie with his 4th Q run, and Bond with his 1st :D

Here are videos of each of their runs if you would like to see how it works ~

That looks like SOOOOOO much fun! Ilike how Bond went back to check them out after the run.

Good job guys! Thanks for posting. We'll have to see if there are any of those offered around here.

Looks like a LOT of FUN!
Monty would love that, I hope I can find one in Alberta.
That was awesome! Teddy would love doing that too!

Cindy
Great job guys!! Looks like a fun day
Here is the event link for in the US -

http://classic.akc.org/pdfs/events/cour ... Events.pdf

There are several pages, keep scrolling down.
It is lots of fun. :D

Some dogs don't keep following, so they don't pass. (It's to simulate the way a sight hound would hunt down game - by running and following it visually then overtaking it.) So if they lose visual ( they run but never look at it), stop to potty, or loop back to the owner, go sniff, etc; they fail - as that would have meant in a real hunt the prey animal got away.
It gets real addicting watching all the dogs run - big, little, hairy and sleek...beautiful stuff!

Are you going to enter it???
:go:
Maybe. Depends on a couple things around the house. We bring Joe home from the nursing home almost every Saturday, so I'll have to look at that. I'll let you know.

Do they make the course shorter for smaller dogs?

Yes, it's a half course (300 yards) for small (under 12 inches I believe) and brachycephalic breeds. So boxers and other similar breeds do the short courses as well. There are lots of little dogs doing it - Pomeranians, little terriers, short bassets and corgis, papillons, dachshunds all were present and running this past weekend. :)

The time allowance is 2 minutes for 600 yards, 1.5 minutes for 300 yards.

Sounds good...and maybe if the weather is nice, it might be a fun family outing :)
Looks like great fun, well done boys

Cindy - there's a lurecoursing place in Somers, WI, not far north of the IL border, you may want to check out next spring (I think it's a little late in the season for this year around here). Give him a chance to try it out. Some of the local clubs hold fun runs there as fundraisers, for instance. An inexpensive way to give him a taste.

I took Sybil and Macy to a Basenji event held there a few years ago and they loved it (also took my rescue dog, Dazzle, who is built more like a sighthound, thinking she would love it, but she was so-so on leaving mom - maybe I'll try her again)

Dawn, both boys looked great.

Good job guys!!!! :high5:

It looks like so much fun. Harry tried it once but he looped back to me at the turn. I think if he knew what he was supposed to do he would love it.

Yes, sometimes they do need to do it a time or 2 to get that it's OK.

I used Chewie's agility "go" command - which was trained as "go and take everything in front of you"...so he got it right away. And it makes a loop - so it ended when he got back to me...worked wonderfully. :phew: And with Bond I had him out watching the other dogs, and I really had him watch the 2nd half with them getting to pounce on the bags at the end...so he was really sucked into it :D
