Do pet seats keep animals safer?

Anyone watch the Today show this morning?

In a 35 mph test... ALL harnesses for dogs failed. They said "if" the test dummies were alive, all would have been severely injured.

I think it's good people are starting to do these tests so they can improve on their products ...and having something still has to be better than nothing!!

Best to crate a dog inside a car but even that doesn't guarantee escape from serious injury. The best reason for using a car harness is to keep the dog from distracting the driver, which in itself can prevent an accident.
Missed that today.
So what was the failure? Did the harnesses break, or were they in unsafe positions on the dog's bodies and caused harm?
That makes great sense Maggie!

gotsheep, some choked the dog, some snapped in half (the harness), some threw the dog out of harness...

I have a seat belt for Langley and crate for Laika I cannot fit two crates in the SUV. The other day Langley's seat belt popped out! :(

Check it out...pretty scary :(
Yes--that is a real eye opener!
My vet recommended that I put my dogs in the "very back" of our S.U.V. in the "cargo area" because it's kind of like a school bus seat and will stop them from bring thrown forward. He said it won't prevent injury but will significantly reduce the chance of harm. I do the same thing in our hatchback car. At first I thought it was cruel but now I understand why he advises against a harness.
Okay...that is upsetting.

So crating is best. Is putting the pups in the back of the suv or wagon and using one of those pet barrier things (metal bars, not mesh fabric) equal to crating? I can't fit 2 crates in either of our vehicles.
the harness I use I used to lug a 100lb gsd that was paralized in the rear around I would hope it would hold my 90 lb sheepdog But it is concerning............
