My Car was Broken Into!

I am so creeped out. This morning I found the gates to my house half way open and my driver's front door wide open ( in the rain). Inside the glove compartment was open and everything thrown around. Same with the compartment between the seats. Open and stuff thrown all over. But nothing taken - although there isn't much in there to take.

Strange thing is...My house is gated completely and the driveway is about 150 feet from the street. Seems like someone went to trouble to open my gates, with Beware of Dog signs all over it, and go to my car. My Van was right next to my car - with the keys in it! And they didn't even touch that car...Creepy...

Creepy is right! We had a car rifled on our driveway a year or two after we moved in here -- they took my wife's trenchcoat out and discarded it in the street 20 feet from the end of the driveway, took some cassette tapes, toll change.

Think if you had things that might not be so obvious as valuables -- for example, did you have a house key in there?

Probably kids looking for a quick score - a handful of change or a gps or some such. You'll now keep your car and van locked as your innocence has been stolen by the little bastards.
They may have been disturbed by your dogs or a noise or someone on the street and left before they'd finished and had a chance to look in the van.
I had that happen to me shortly after we moved in here. It was the car parked in the driveway and they left in a hurry because the door was left open. I don't keep any money/change or anything important in my cars. One other warning for people, remember if you have an attached garage to make sure you lock the door between the house and the garage...thieves have been getting into peoples houses through the unlocked door. Somehow they'be figured out how to get the garage door to open.
It used to be, if you could get your fingers under a garage door and started pulling up, the opener would turn on & open the door.
Don't know if they're like that nowadays.

And part of me believes the opposite of locking the car.
Do NOT leave any valuables or ways to get in the house in the car, and just leave the car unlocked. That way, they won't break a window to get in your car. There's nothing to steal so who cares if they rifle thru it. There's nothing of importance in there.
(They leave the doors open because it doesn't make any sense to close it and make noise.)
The car was unlocked. But it was all the way up my driveway - abput 150 feet - and my house is gated in and that's what creeps me out. Why go to such a bother when the neighbors cars are unlocked sitting in the street?

The dogs were fast asleep with me in my room - never made a sound

We slept last night with all the windows locked and the lights on like Lunar park!
Happened to me a while ago too, it was most likely the stupid kids across the street from here. People are obnoxious.
When we still had the shop someone got into our car while we were
at work- 30 feet from the car. There was nothing to take really so they
just messed up what was there. They peed all over everything. It was
so gross. I actually HOSED out the car. There wasn't anything else I could
do. I don't envy you- it really feels like a violation. You will get through
this, hang tough.

Years ago, my van was broken into while at work in the hospital parking lot when I was working a night shift. They went through all my stuff (disappointing I'm sure, as it was mostly my dog training gear!), and did steal my dog account checkbook. I got a call the next day that someone found it out in a street, about 15 blocks away. Guess they hoped I had money stuck in there, and chucked it out when they found nothing.
