Another Hotspot

Very considerate dog. He kept licking until I told him to stop and took a look. Front left paw. Matted hair and a hotspot starting.

"Simon", I say, "you just earned yourself a trip to the Vet tomorrow"

Sigh...my day off.

Just went through a hotspot on Baxter. My groomer told me to go get some athlete's foot medicine and start him on that. Amazing--it cleared up in 4 days. Just thought I would pass that along--
It was the first hotspot I had dealt with so it was new information for me.
I have been dealing with them all summer.
The vet put us on Zyrtec. It's helped alot.
I'll have to try the athletes foot stuff next time.

She hates to wear socks and pants and soft e collars.

Try it--it worked here--
There was a little licking but all in all he did well leaving it alone.
The althetes foot medicine, is it the foot powder? I want to let my sister know because one of her st. Bernards, Bernie, has has non stop hot spots. He has been to the vet many times. Constantly on antibiotics but it never really goes away. They shave the areas and I'm sure that in itself is an irritant to the areas. Poor Bernie, he even chews at the scabs. I have suggested they bathe/soak the areas in epson salts. Their Vet has told them to put him on Royal Canin food, no treats, except that brand and green beans, and they are to stop the Bio Spot. If this athletes foot medicine/powder works, I want to let them know. I have also suggested to them to have scrappings done. But, I'm sort of ignored. what do I know.

I used a cream. It actually was a Kroger brand of the athletes foot cream. When I asked the pharmacist about it, he named an ingredient and suggested the cream rather than the powder.
Thanks for the info. I hope there is a Krogers near them in MD. don't suppose you know what the ingredient is  I don't even know if Kroger is in Minnesota. Thanks again. :)
Nancy - have they cultured the dog's areas? If it's ongoing, it's likely a combo of infection, yeasts, fungal...
And if it's that ingrained in his system, topical is not going to do it by itself. The myconizole is good as a stop if you catch it early, and if it's the right med for the right bug.
If it's too bad, the dog may need some prednisone too.

I just bought the store brand--there were many other brands there on the shelf. I think the ingredient that Dawn mentioned is what the pharmacist said was in all the different brands.

Just a note--we did catch this very early and it was the first one that we had dealt with. Dawn's advice above seems like good advice if their poor dog has an ongoing problem.
No cultures have been done. I mentioned doing that a number of times, my sister is also a nurse, but what do I know  They were told by changing the food, they will know something in 2 months. All the wool rugs have also been picked up. Well, I going to stick my nose out again and give her this info.
Thanks Dawn for the extra information.
