Cooking a Spaghetti Squash in the Microwave

Well it's official. Joan is trying to kill us all.

She put a Spaghetti Squash in the Microwave for 60 minutes on HIGH and left to walk the dog.

Oh wait; I guess that means she's just trying to kill me.

In all fairness she did poke the required safety holes in the Spaghetti Squash, but everywhere I read -and I read a lot- was in the range of 10-15 minutes, with most being 10-12 on high with the squash cut in half, one at 15 minutes at 70% power.

I heard a whole bunch of hissing coming from the kitchen and went to investigate and it sounded like an entire cattery filled with angry moms seeing a pack of dogs come in the door.

I carefully approached the oven shielding myself the best I could from any possible detonation and staying as far to the side as possible. I pressed cancel and called Joan.

"Honey, are you cooking a Spaghetti Squash in the microwave?"
"Yes"
"Did you intend to put it in for 45 minutes?" (There were 33 minutes to go, I assumed it was set for 45. My assumption was incorrect as I found out later)
"Yes"
"45 minutes?"
"Yes"
"Don't you think that's a lot of time?"
"I thought that's how long it's supposed to cook."
"45 minutes? Really?"
"Yes. Why did it explode?"
"Not yeeet... talk to you later"

Then when she came back in I asked her about it in a bit more detail, and let her know what I had read on the net about how long to cook a spaghetti squash in the microwave.

Then I asked her if she thought 45 minutes was too much again, and the way she paused I knew that wasn't accurate. So I asked her directly if she put it in for 45 minutes or if it was longer, maybe an hour?

Yes, an hour.
She claims she heard me ask her "60 minutes" on the phone.
No, I know I was asking about 45 minutes.

Yup. she put it in for an hour. Assuming we heard each other correctly this time.

So here's your Spaghetti Squash in the Microwave Recipe:
1 Spaghetti Squash in a microwave safe casserole with 1/2 cup of water.
15 or 20 good pricks in the skin to allow it to vent, alternatively cutting it in half if you're a chicken.
10 to 12 minutes on high, or 15 minutes on 70%.

And take the dog for a walk.

Thanks for the cooking lesson. And the laugh. 8)

Kristine
ha been there done that
Maybe that's how long you cook it in a regular oven?
Was it any good?
ron,
too funny, thank joan for me. thankfully my coffee wasn't up to my mouth while reading this.
this story actually made me miss my ex-wife, she was good for at least a yearly episode. 8)
Michele, while she was serving some to herself, I asked her how it was. She said it was "done". After she ate some and I was serving myself 10 minutes later, she sadly said it was overcooked. I had some and it was complete mooosh.

Jade, you may be right, but Joan has been cooking Spaghetti Squash in the microwave exclusively for years. I love it and consider it a huge treat.
I've never tried it...but an HOUR?? lol 8O
Poor Joan 8) 8)
I love spaghetti squash and I used to cook it in the microwave when I was cooking it for my students. I didn't cook it an hour when I fixed it in the oven I love it. It reminds me of my ex sister in law trying to make pinto beans when she was first married. She tried to cook a 3 lb bag in a pan with water. She didn't realize they expanded. She had to borrow pots from the neighbor to put them in as they cooked.
My big fiasco was when I was trying to pressure cook green beans. The phone rang ( that was when we didnt have cell phones or portable ones) I heard a loud noise and when i went in the kichen there were green beans everywhere. They were falling from the ceiling on our heads for hours. It ruined my pressure cooker too.

Well, just 7 weeks later and she forgot something else in the microwave. This time she left it in after it cooked; just forgot that it was in there for hours. Served and ate dinner, went out shopping for a couple of hours. Only remembered it when she went to clean off the stove and saw it in there, about 3 hours later.

It was our second spaghetti squash of the year.

Can you believe it?
I didn't think you could cook ANYTHING in the microwave for an HOUR!
Thanks for the smile.

I don't think the problem is with Joan at all, I think it is the Spaghetti Squash. :) geez now I'm hungry.
Lets face it you are not meant to eat spaghetti squash !!!!!!!!!!!!

Anything that takes more than 5 minutes in the micro would be forgotten here........if it wasn't for the reminder chime. Don't worry Joan, prior to this machine I'd forget things in the micro...maybe finding them at clean up or the next day. I always figured it was a psychological block that I really didn't want to eat it anyway.
Stuff gets forgotten in our microwave...often ;)
