Is it Tick season?

Yesterday my neighbor was over and and petting Beau and said that Beau had a lump on his back. Lo and behold, underneath all that fur was a Tick! We quickly took a tweezers and pulled it out. Fortunately, he only had the one and it looked like it hadn't been there very long. We gave him a bath.

All the years that I've had dogs, I've never had one that had ticks. I'm quite surprised, as he is an indoor guy and goes out on a leash for potty and his daily walks.

Anybody out there had any experience with Ticks on their dogs? What preventatives are best?

How bad are they in the southwest?

My guys love to be outside, and now that they are naked I want them to be as safe as possible.
This isn't about a dog, but I had a tick sucking on the back of my head a few weeks ago. It scared me alot as I picked off what I thought was just a scab (didn't know what it was until it was in my hand).
It's always tick season here. We hardly ever have much of a winter, but yeah...it's time for them. I took the boys fishing in my parents' pond in the middle of the woods the other day, and I found at least one on each of us!
