vet recommended 1/4 cup of hyrdaperoxide for a 14lbs. cat

After my cat had ingested a few small pieces of a silica gel packet I called my vets emergency line and was told to give him a 1/4 cup of hydraperoxide. He is 14lbs and only 11 months old. He threw up all night and we had to bring him into an emergency vet clinic, where he has been recieving treatment for the last three days and was in serious condition. The recommended dose was even to much for a 200lbs dog. The emergrncy vet could not believe that someone would tell me to give him that much. I have spent over $1000.00 for his care and recovery and I am so outraged and saddened by this I'm not sure what to do. Does anyone have any advice that would help me, please. [/b]

Hi,

I've been thinking about your post a lot since I first read it but didn't have any answers for you at that time. Picking up my animal medical book...gasp seems like no matter what medicine is given..it's usually only 1/2 or 1 tsp.

What a horrible experience you went through..emotionally and financially too. You have my sympathy.

I'm not sure what steps you could take but this is perhaps what I would do. I may not confront the vet's office at first, but call and speak to them and say I want to confirm that you told me to do "blah blah blah" Have a witness listening in or preferably on another line. The vet assistant may then catch the mistake or correct you or him/herself. If they agree with the 1/4 cup and you have a witness...then I would ask for the reinbursement of the 1,000 dollars you paid.

If they correct you and say no it's 1/4 tsp ...the ultimate scenerio is going to be your word against theirs. I would still try to deal with it by being polite , yet firm and letting them know how much anquish and financial burden this diagnosis placed on you.

Two people looking at this may say you might have been so distraught initially that you misunderstood cup vs tsp. I'm only bringing out this fact because if you try to get financial compensation for it ..that question will be brought up by his side. At the same time whoever gave this info may be putting other animals in danger and I would speak to the office and let them know.

I wish you luck and please let us know how your kitty is doing and what happens.

Wishing you the best
Marianne and the boys
