The most important "why" of all

Why does the ice cream truck play such hideous music and then go so fast down the street that you don't have time to get any money?

Wait a minute, what am I complaining about?

Does anybody else miss the jingle jangle of the Good Humor bells?
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
We still have kids that are hired to ride on bikes to sell ice cream. The bells drive me crazy when they go by, but I think I'd miss it if it was gone.... the Dickie Dee bikes always go by at supper time....lol.... then everyone wants ice cream not supper.
I love those things :D I still remember our ice cream man Ken, every summer he would appear. Of course in those days you could treat the whole neighborhood for under 1.00I(I think this was in the very early nineties  )
Why did they remove soda fountains from the pharmacy ?

A root beer float or raspberry lime rickey would
be great right about now !!!!

(PS We never did catch up to the Good Humor truck!!!!!!!!!)
Or a Vernors float...mmmmm

Stacy, isn't ice cream supper?
One of my favorite childhood memories is from back when I was 9 or 10. It was sweltering out (like it is now), Dad was out of town, and Mom & I went for a ride to cool off in the air conditioning. She stopped at an ice cream stand and we had banana splits for dinner. Banana splits!! My mom was the coolest mom EVER!

Naturally, she doesn't remember this at all.

I still can feel the hot sun on my neck as we ate those banana splits.

For DINNER.

Very cool mom! We used to get burgers and fries from Golden Point when my Dad was out of town, that was pretty cool cause it's the only time we ever had them. Jil, did you have any MillersBros by you?
Nope, what's a Miller Bros? If it's a burger/ice cream joint it sounds pretty good right now!
We had lots of drive in's in our area
A & W Root Beer

Lorenzos- a local italian pizza place, where the girls would
roller skate out and take your order ! It really was like
Happy Days!

Ask Ron about:
Arnie Woo Woo Ginsburg"s -famous for hamburgers and
fries which was North of Boston.( Arnie was a radio
disc jockey~his day job,to support his hamburger addiction!)
We have a family owned chain here in Albuquerque that is modeled after an old drive in...........they did away with the skates just a few years ago as too dangerous for the girls. Pull into your little bay, read the menu on the box, press the button and place your order.

Anyway......the menu is the best of the past and present. The fountain treats are exactly like you remember, even the black cows...rootbeer floats. Hamburgers, hotdogs, cherry cokes (before they came in a can), a to die for cherry limeade.......oh stop! Hamburger, onion rings....oh, the fat content is a killer and so are the onion burps afterwards.........
Sheepie Boss
We love road food!!
Oh that sounds great-love all those selections, especially
the cherry limeade and the burgers!!!!!
We're leaving now for Albuquerque, but don't tell
Tasker's mom! She's keeping an eye on my not
so healthy heart diet

PS-Is there a Flamenco festival in New Mexico, ? Albuquerque
this time of year????
YES!! Most flamenco events will be in Santa Fe, 60 miles north. One or two here in town. Amazing selection of dancers and musicians. Probably won't get to SF for the events, I don't do evenings well anymore. Fell in love with flamenco when I went to school in Spain.
The question is, do they sell tapas at the drive in????

Would love to go to that Flamenco conference/event
someday! I learned about it from a friend in dance class-
she loved it!

Spain is beautiful- the Paradors (state run inns ) are wonderful !

Oh and about the drive in, check this site out!

www.roadfood.com
Oh man, I love road food too and now you've made me hungry!!
No tapas, LOL! And surely no sherry to go with it  Our one true Spanish restaurant closed, but we can find tapas in some bars......better luck in Santa Fe.....it is truly the City Different.

Now if it's road food you want, there's a diner in town that serves a wonderful chocolate malt........in the silver mixing glass......and all the other stuff. Great burgers, BLT's, etc.......and open until midnight. (that's big for this town!)

LOL, went one night after church with friend.......we were in the middle of Orthodox Lent.......couldn't find a thing on the menu to eat that was within out dietary restrictions.....except french fries (and prayed they weren't cooked in animal fat.) They were great.....11 pm, fries and Cokes.......oh yum.

Jill-
Miller Bros creamery was an ice cream place on Gratiot(and elsewhere) that had the bluest, nastiest blue moon ice cream ever :D Of course we adored it
Okay, I just posted this under the earthquake...but since we're talking food here....I miss Buchemi's pizza, coke in the bottle, Olga's kitchen at the mall, Greek town( old Parthenon), Stroh's beer, vernor gingerale, fago pop, people who say the word "pop" and know what you mean, and believe it or not ,fish flies :D (they're not food..well, people food..) Michigan was such a great place to grow up, it' so different from the west coast...So if any of those things or places still exist, please have one for me :D
We still have a drive-in here. It's called the Red Rabbit. You just pull in and they come out to your car to take your order. The food comes out on a tray that hooks onto your car window, have to get the paper products inside quickly!
And who needs a menu! We always order the same thing: Bunny Burger, large fries with extra bunny dust and a Birch Beer!
The worst part is that they are only open on the weekends. Grrrrrrr

Anybody who is coming out for the Centennial has to go there for at least one meal!!!!
Darcy-
we're getting fish flies now, I'll be real happy to send you some :D Strohs is gone but Buscemis is still around as is faygo and vernors. And of course Strohs hot fudge sauce.

How many tons of ff would you like?
Lots and Lots :D Do you live near the water??? When I was in high school, my boyfriend and I use to play Mario Andretti and Jackie Stewart by slamming on the brakes as we went thru the fish flies on the street...You really can get a good skid going...aahhh the memories :D What about Olgas kitchen, it was kinda fast food greek...gyro with cheese and Olga sause...I think it was yougurt...but YUUUUMMMYYY!!! Do you go down to greek town at all???I know the old parthenon burned down and is now the New Parthenon, but it has been so long since I have been back..sigh...some people say "eeewww, Detroit??!!" but honestly, it was and I believe, a fantastic place to grow up!!!
Holly, I LOVE Blue Moon ice cream! We used to get it at this place across from the cottage we stayed at in Traverse City!

Darcy, Olga's is still around, we go there for lunch once in a great while. And I have Coke in a bottle in the Coke machine in my basement! It's one of those that sells glass bottles, remember how you'd always be afraid the bottles would break when you pulled them out? That's the kind! Pop (soda for all you non-Michiganders) is so much better from a glass bottle.
I'm from Illinois and I say "pop." I think it's a Midwestern thang. "Soda" souds like the person is putting on airs. I think we should do a food road trip and stop at every greasy spoon and drive-in. A root beer float sounds good right now.

Paula O.

Dogs rule.
James is originally from California and never says pop-- he always says soda so now I've picked up on it. I only say pop once in awhile now.

Holly, did you mean Sander's hot fudge or am I missing out on some awesome beer infused variety?

Ugh, fishflies! I went to high school at Anchor Bay and worked in New Baltimore where every year, they held the Fishfly Festival. That should tell you something about how bad they got! I used to deliver pizza and it was like driving on ice. People would be skidding through intersections and whaling into trees. It's amazing what a few million bugs can do. Every night after work I'd take a shower and I'd find a bunch of them in the drain where they had been stuck in my hair and I didn't even know it.

I go to Greektown a lot since I work downtown. Sometimes we go for lunch. I love Pizza Papalis. James and I also play a lot of poker so we go to Greektown casino too. I miss Trapper's Alley.
Jill, What happened to Trappers Alley? Did it close down? the last time I was there, there wasnt much going on...But I liked Trappers alley too!! You need to go to Olga's and have an "olga" :D tell me what you think!!
You know someone is an old-timer from Boston if they refer to their soda as a "tonic". Pop isn't used around here at all. Soda is most common.
Yeah, the fish fly festival! Always a good time. I used to be part owner of a batting cage near Lake St Clair and used to hose off the cement with a fire department hose from a hydrant. Because of all the field lights we would measure them by the inch  Nasty smell and under the traffic lights it was like ice. Houghton Lake has tons also.

Olgas is still around in the malls, now there are some in freestanding buildings.

Jill- I think Sanders was owned by Strohs...remember when they were in Macomb Mall? Best hot fudge cream puffs ever :D

Jil-What flavor was blue moon anyway? And what flavor is Faygo rock n rye?

Really? I never knew that. My grandpa even worked for Stoh's. Why didn't we get more fudge and less beer? I vaguely remember the one at Macomb Mall. My grandma used to take me to the one at 7 and Gratiot when I was really little. Now that area is one the highest crime areas in Detroit.

I'll pipe up on the Rock n Rye. I don't know what flavor it is exactly, but it's my absolute favorite. I believe it's cherry cola mixed with cream soda, at least that's what it tastes like to me. Faygo makes the best diet flavors too-- very little differences from the original.
Hmm. Blue Moon was . . . Blue! I can't think of a thing that it resembles. Very sweet though. Now I want some so I can walk around with a blue mouth at work, LOL. Boy, that takes me right back to the beach and being 10 years old.

Jill, I think you're right about rock n rye. It's one of my favorite Faygo flavors, too. I haven't had Faygo in years. I'm going to get some tonight.

I used to go to the Sanders at the Livonia Mall. They served their sundaes in those metal cone-shaped dishes. And, oh man, those hot fudge cream puffs were to die for!
Did you go to Metro Beach? That's where we always went, but it's not the same anymore :( How about Edgewater Park or Boblo ?
I used to love Metro Beach as a kid. We had a huge pond as a kid so going to the beach was a special treat. Now it's just kind of dirty.

Our student council group at school went to Boblo every year. The boat ride was fun but always made me a little sick. I used to really like watching people dance on the boat though!
I thought you were too young to remember Boblo. You're right about Metro, it's pretty bad now and the water isn't swimmable(?) for most of the summer. Stoney Creek is great though.
I wish I was too young.

My sister lives right by Stoney Creek (in Washington Township) but I haven't been there in many years, at least for swimming purposes. I've went rollerblading there a few times.

Remember the Hydrotube waterslide at Lakeside? I used to love that when I was a kid.
I hate big malls. Even though I could walk to Lakeside I haven't been there more than twice in 10 years.
My mom works at Lakeside. If I didn't visit her there now, I'd never see her because I'm way too lazy to drive all the way to her house in Richmond, although I've been wanting to take Clyde swimming. I trust him without a fence but Lucy will run like the wind.
Blue moon ice cream flavor was an almondish flavor....Metro was awesome...My sister used to work at lakeside, and I used to work at the red lobster at lakeside......I miss the greek festival's...yummy food!! I never went to Boblo..we used to go to Cedar point...Has any one ever eaten at Sinbad's? They have the best oyster stew........
Greek Fast Food? OMGoodness! I'm coming, I'm coming!

Our church festival is in early Oct but next week we start making the baklava. Then all the other pastries and stuff. Long, long process.
Boblo was great! I sort of remember Edgewater Park, I think I went there once. I do remember looking for remnants of it when we'd drive down Eight Mile to Northland Mall. Northland used to be THE place to shop.

We'd go to the beach at Kensington, but then I'm from the other side of town.
I have lived in Texas since 1992. While online searching for Faygo Rock 'n Rye, I found this forum! It is old, old, old now (last post one year ago), but I just had to add to it! You all took me home! I lived in Sterling Heights (14 and Ryan) and Armada (34-mile road-ish). Hearing talk of Olga's and Faygo made my mouth water! And Stony Creek - what a great time. I skipped school more than once to hang out at Stony!

I shopped mostly at Oakland Mall and Lakeside. Loved Oakland - and I remember it before they added on the JCPenney wing. I LOVED Bucemis pizza! The only thing I really MISS that I didn't see mentioned here is Tubby's Sub Sandwiches! Absolutely the best!

You all made me smile. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! How in the world am I going to satisfy my craving for Rock 'n Rye and a Tubby's Sub??? :)
My grandfather had one of the coke machines that dispensed the glass bottles. It was in the basement (this was south of Chicago). I still remember the taste and this was in the late '60's.....it really did taste different.
Do they still make Faygo red pop?
White Castle, anyone? Miss those too!
You know there still is the old store in mount Clemens that sells icecream. Its still a nice stopin the heat of summer.

I am way late on this BUT,
I had to comment!

I was doing yard work (last week,
mind you)
I hear the loudest, cheesiest Christmas
music!
Yes, the ice cream truck was blaring
Silent Night 8O
Oh, there were more, they dont move fast!
Nothing like a nice round of Jingle Bells
when it is 100 degrees :D

I remember Miller Brother's. They where in Mt Clemens. In the summer my Dad/Mom would pile all 6 of us kids in the car and we would drive from St Clair Shores to Mt Clemens for ice cream at Miller Brothers. I think it was on Crocker Rd, but not sure. We'd each get one scoop on a sugar cone, but it was the best, a real treat.
Wow all the memories of Michigan and it sounds like alot of us grew up around the same area. I remember riding my bike, as a teenager, from St Clair Shores to Metro. We used to take the kids down to Metro alot to play on the playgrounds and when my son was a couple of weeks old we took the kids down to play and I had Aaron in my arms swinging back and forth on a "bench swing" they had for the parents, when a Sea Gull made a "special delivery" on my head. Yuck!

Sanders was owned by the Sanders Family until they sold it...but they make the best hot fudge for sundaes.

I worked at AAA at 8 mile and Kelly and a bunch of us used to go over to Eastland on our lunch and eat a Sanders Hot Fudge Sundae for lunch. Oh we used to all get stomach aches from it, but it was worth it. What about a Boston Cooler with Vernor's Ginger Ale. Yummt!!!! Better Made Barbecue Potato Chips!

What about the Cafateria in Hudson's....the best food...Maurice Salad.

Even though I have lived in the south for 5 1/2 yrs I still call soft drinks Pop....yes, they all laugh, but I will not give up my pop and move over to soda.

I'm going to Michigan in September to celebrate my son Adam's getting his Master's Degree from U of M and I just may be eating my way through it all. I wonder if Green Tea will Zero out all the fat and calories? What do you think Elissa?
ahhh, hudsons...my favorite was always the canadian cheddar cheese soup and the shrimp salad sandwich......

my most fond memory of eastland was the entrance to the east of hudsons....Olgas first then to the limited right across the way.....

i also every now and then have dreams where im going down that escalator on the west side of hudsons...you know, the one where it went from the basement up into the mall proper.....
