My First Earthquake

Oh my God. How scary!!! This was my first earthquake in the 3 1/2 years I have been here. I was located 20 miles south of here and was a 5.5 I grabbed my son and went to the archway. It lasted maybe 15 seconds...everything was shaking. Though not as bad as I thought one would be. After it stopped my son started crying.
Meanwhile my husband and the baby are out shopping. I haven't been able to get in touch with them. Darn Nextel Phones!!
I hope the aftershocks are less intense. I don't know if I can handle it.
My sister & Mom & Dad felt it 100 miles from here.
Crazy....
Just needed to vent!!
Ok I am better now...lol I think

Yikes! Glad you're ok :D
OMG, I'm glad you're ok! I think I'd completely lose it not being able to get a hold of hubby and baby! Keep trying! Please let us know when you do....
I've experienced 2 earthquakes, both were only 3.3 and 3.2 though.... but still.... you always wonder if they are only a precursor to something bigger.
I didn't get a hold of hubby till he got home. He had his phone off.
They were in the car and didn't even feel it.
I basically jump on him. He made fun of me because he grew up here and is used to it. I'm from New Jersey and definitely not used to it.
The first earthquake I ever felt, was when I was 17, in MI. I had just gotten home from school...watching General Hospital, drinking a coke (in the bottle of course :D )When all of a sudden the picture over the fireplace started banging against the wall....then the glasses on the bar started tinkeling....Now this is in november, in michigan...I race outside... Darn (not my real thought) the puppy (4 mnth golden) was still inside...I hesitantly went inside and looked around..everything started MOVING..holy cow, the house is HAUNTED!!!! Grabbed the dog, coat and flew outside...the house looked like it was breathing...I stayed outside for 2 hours, until my mom came home...She asked me if I felt the earthquake...  Okay so the house wasnt haunted....Here in AZ, there have been a few earthquakes, and would you believe, I still have come to the same first conclusion....Haunting....I have had to stop watching scary movies and reading horror novels...... 8O
Darcy,

I remember that earthquake in Michigan too! I was in 5th grade and I hated the kid behind me and I thought he was kicking my desk. So I turned around to yell at him and realized, everyone's desk was shaking! No one knew what the heck was happening because it's MICHIGAN! We're not supposed to get earthquakes!

Jill
The shaking is bad enough.......but the sound, sonic waves thru the earth.........that's spooky. Nope, don't care to live in Calif for that reason. Another troubling spot is the New Madrid fault along the Mississippi............when that goes it's going to be nasty.

Hopefully this little equake ( 8O ) will spur you onto getting yourself more earthquake aware: strapping down the hotwater tank, makeing sure the house is bolted to the foundation, not just nailed, emergency kit, where your "papers" are located, etc, etc.

Glad you are safe!!
Jill, Isnt that funny??!! Who knew Detroit was actually on a fault line....My twin was at work and fell off of her stool....she thought it was because she was hung over from partying in Winsor the night before...... :D

On another note, my brother was sooo sweet..for our 37 birthdays, he sent me and Lisa each 2 pieces of Buchemi's (SP??) pizza and a bottle of coke....just like the good ole days...Do you ever eat their pizza or better yet...do they still have Olga's Kitchen in the mall's? Those are really yummy too...some things, you just miss.........
YIKES YIKES YIKES!!! SOunds scarey.

Hey Darcy, I have a twin borther too!!! I have a questions for you, do people ask you all the time if you are identical????? hehehehehehe  I just say I hope not!!!!!!!!
Yikes! 8O Glad everything is okay with you and your family, Elissa! That sounds scary! I've never been through an earthquake. Here it's mostly hurricanes!

I used to have a friend that worked at Buschemi's so we ate it all the time. I actually just commented a couple of days ago how it sounded good to me. They just opened up a new one by my house.

They do have Olga's Kitchen still. It's funny, all through high school, I worked at Lakeside and my mom has worked at Lord and Taylor for 10 years and I've never eaten at an Olga's. When we drove through Ohio on Saturday we stopped at Waffle House-- which we don't have in Michigan but I love!
Poor Elissa!
My brother called to tell me about it yesterday. It's funny though, because he was the only person (of 3) in the house who felt it...
Since I moved to Virginia last year, I've experienced a hurricane, several tropical storms, a few tornados, an earthquake, and a flood. People tell me that I brought it all and need to move back to where I came from!
Gladly--earthquakes I can handle, tornados, not so much...
I guess compared with Hurricanes which I have been through some nasty ones on the east coast this wasn't really too bad. It only lasted about 30 seconds. But with Hurricanes at least you know when they are coming.

Barney1 That's not very nice what people are saying. Tornados are scary. When I lived in Upstate NY we had one come right down my street.
My Husband's Grandmother lived in OK and I refused to go there because of the tornados I don't know why anyone would willingly live where there are so many tornados. I know it's supper cheap there... But to me...not worth it. Where does your brother live?

SheepieBoss... Our house is has all the earthquake stuff... Water Heater straps...etc. There are people here selling all sorts of stuff to make your house earthquake safe. Like little sticky things to attach your knick knacks to before you display them... Going a little over board I think.
I guess being on sand here in the desert the earthquakes aren't as bad as other areas... Luckily!!!

No substantial after shocks...Knock on wood!!!

Elissa
scary!!!

That's what I like of living here in Juarez. No tornados, hurricanes, floods, fires or earthquakes. The only thing you must be wary of are the mosquitoes and roaches so big you can use them as scooters.
WOW, that is scary!

I'm so scared of something like that happening to me. I'm glad it wasn't too bad. We're in Oklahoma now and it's nothing but hail, followed by tornados. There's not a night that passes that we don't have our channels filled with tornado warnings. I HATEEEEEEEE missing my shows. ;) ;)

We're from tx though so we're somewhat used to it, but they had a warning on the top right hand of your screen to turn your channel to a certain "update channel." A LOT more effective, imo.

***HUGS to you***
Elissa,
My brother is in San Diego...the earthquakes there usually aren't as bad as they can be in the rest of the state (knock on wood)...It's funny--now that I am on the East Coast and decorating my house, I still do things that they taught us as kids living in earthquake-prone areas--like not having anything heavy hanging above the bed, using those stickies to keep knick knacks on the shelves, and I just kind of keep those things in the back of my head. I was trying to decide what to hang over my bed here, since the chances of a large earthquake are very little, that I hope to hang something over it before we move back to California!
We used to have earthquake drills at school when I was a kid--we would all have to get under our desks and put our hands over our heads--don't think I ever felt an earthquake at school, though!
Good luck--hopefully there aren't any aftershocks...
Very scary! So glad you all are okay!
Barney1 That is so funny about what you said about hanging something over your bed. Do it while you can. I always had something over my bed in NY and when I moved out here and was told I couldn't do that because I would be risking injury I was so depressed.
Those earthquake drills don't sound too safe. What if the roof collapsed... everyone would be dead under their desks 8O

Thanks Gail... Kinda scary with a 7.0 off the coast of Northern CA and they issued a Tsunmai Warning last night but cancelled it shortly after. Some people are saying these recent earthquakes are like a chain reaction and their could be more... Get me outta here...lol

Elissa
Earthquake drills??

That's what we'd do for atomic bomb threats, then someone figured out by the time we got to hydrogen bombs it didn't matter anyway. We'd all be crisp no matter where we were.

Glad to see they are still using that "CYA" drill......if only for natural disasters such as earthquakes or tornados.
Geez would you believe we had another earthquake...a 5.3
I noticed a hairline crack from our patio going up into the stucco on the house....nice!!

I was just about to ask if you had another one today. I just talked to my husband's grandparents (both sets live in San Bernardino area), and they said things really shook but they're okay.
Yeah, we are about 40 miles from Yucaipa where it was centered.
Yes, was at Dr.'s office when the TV switched over to "breaking news." Always thought that was appropriate name for earthquake.....breaking.

Thought of you instantly, glad all is well. Little quakes are far superior to one giant one.
Trust me on this, you will get blase about earthquakes after your 10th or 20th. A few weeks after I got Henry we had a little earthquake just as I got into bed. The house felt like a truck had hit it, I woke up instantly. Henry never moved, I had to wake him up to tell him about it.

I was at work during the 1989 earthquake in SF, I was terrified for my Chesapeake Bay Retriever who was sleeping at home. When I finally got home I found big paintings crashed off the walls (DO NOT hang anything over your bed in CA), dishes had fallen from kitchen cabinets, and bookcases overturned. What I couldn't find was my dog. I was crying, calling her, thinking she must be dead under a bookcase. I still don't know where she was but after a minute or two she was at my side terrified. She slept wrapped around my head that night. The good news was that in the dozens of aftershocks we had for the next 6 months I had to wake her up to tell her we were having another earthquake -- no permanent trauma whatsoever. I was traumatized but got over it. Now I am fairly blase . As long as there is no serious damage--cracks don't count, every house has them. When you sell or buy a house the one constant question is what happened in the last earthquake. Oh and all of your doors will go out of square eventually.
SheepieBoss that was too funny... Breaking news is perfect for that isn't it...lol

Henry's Mom I don't think I'll ever feel comfortable with the Earthquakes or even get used to them. I grew up with Thunderstorms but am also a big wuss when it comes to that too...lol
