wet exzema

well a trip to the vets last night with boo. she got another bout of wet exzema on her back and dermatitis in her mouth. does any one think that the two could be related as my vets says no.... :( The reason she gets dermatitis in her mouth is she got a fold of skin on her lip that shouldnt be there. My vet wants to do an operation to correct this small problem but im not sure what does every one else think

Eczema and dermatitis are essentially the same thing but can be caused by different things. It sounds like boo gets eczema on her back and contact dermatitis on her mouth. If I remember the definitions correctly, the eczema is the one caused by allergy and too many histimines and the contact dermatitis is literally from just that-- contact/irritation caused by rubbing or touching.

My Lucy gets eczema pretty bad this time of year and chews the heck out of her backside and tail. This year, I got her to the vet and she just chewed her tail. A cortisone shot and prednisone follow up take care of it.

If your vet thinks that removing that skin will alleviate the problem in her mouth, I'd say do it. As a human, I have lots of skin allergies and often get dermatitis around my mouth sometimes too and it makes eating and drinking miserable. Plus, for me all moving of the mouth further irritates it. I'm not sure if it's the same for a dog but I'd do anything to permanently get rid of mine!
If it's just going to be a nip and tuck to eliminate one problem, go for it. I'm thinking of all the fold, etc we've had on our big dogs and never a problem.......so apparently your girl is prone to this........maybe as said, due to allergies or an immue system weakness. hmmmm.

she uses a dog food which is formulated in the UK
She tells me the condition improved on this food for her dog.

Good luck , and our best to Boo !
thank you for your replys. We are going to go ahead with the operation. And we think the problem is caused the the food she eats as she is such a fussy girl.It can be hard to get her to eat. boo is booked in for a operation next week for a growth on her leg so i,m kind of worried over this as it is the first time she has been under the knife. :( Thanks for the burns web site i will be looking into it. :)
