Dog doors

Hi,
I just got a new OES pup, and am looking to install a dog door, but want to get one that will fit him when he's a grown dog. Any suggestions? Most of the dog doors vary in size - I'm thinking I should go with the very largest (usually extra large - for dogs up to 120 lbs.), but am worried that the door will be too heavy for the puppy to use. Any tips would be appreciated.

Funny you should bring this up because we just bought one today. I'd definitely go with the bigger one for future's sake. I measured Clyde's butt against the 100 pound dog door and I don't think he'll make it. He's only 75 pounds but he's really wide. But, he's only 8 months and is still growing so I figured we'd be better safe than sorry!
were not getting a dog door because when the sheepie gets too big there will be enuf room to squeeze a human in there and we dont wana get robbed :D 8O that wud be bad so could a grown person fit in a sheepie dog door?? i m not sure
I think they have electronic doors that your dog can wear a collar and it will only allow him (with the collar on) to go in and out of the door. They are more sophisticated these days than the hole in the wall with a flap...
Ours is just the screen door. The regular door closes behind it so there's no security issue.
Our dog who is probably 65lbs (been awhile since she's been weighed) ...fits in the doggie door made for my in-laws corgi mix. Their corgi is probably the size of a standard beagle (But 20lbs heavier/wider). She goes through it in seconds and the smaller size doesn't phase her. BTW, she absolutely loves doggie doors!
Hi,

I have a dog door for my three dogs, two golden retrievers and an OES. There weight is from 75 lbs. up to about 90 lbs. I purchased the dog door for large dogs and they do just fine with it. The next size up would have been for the Great Danes, St Bernards, etc which would be too big..
Hi,

..reminded me of a funny thing I once read in Readers Digest. A fellow doing reno's on a home noticed a large dog door and commented to the home owner about possibly being worried that a man could fit through the door to rob them.

The home owner responded by saying..do you think any body would really try to come in through that dog door knowing there was a dog that size on the other side? LOL...thought that was pretty funny!

In response to your original question..yes the pup may have trouble when he is tiny going through the door meant for larger dogs. While I don't have a dog door I have several cat doors...each time I propped them up until the cats were used to it's location and became accustomed to it.

I also wouldn't feel comfortable letting a small pup outside without supervision, at least not until they were bigger. My mom lives in the heart of the city and last year an eagle flew in the neighborhood park and swooped up a pup..no one would have ever thought it was possible! Not in the city at least! You also have to be aware of people seeing the pup and getting into your yard to possible steal it. I know two scenerios that are rare but still could happen.

I'm thinking of having a dog door installed this year as my sliding door is frequently open all the time...like Jack I have three dogs too and whew it would cut down on a lot of work for me.

Can't wait to hear all about your pup and welcome to the forum!

I wouldn't worry too much about size being an issue. We have the largest door they make and our friend's Min Pin has no problem using it! I would think maturity and fear might play into it more at that age. Lucy got it much faster than Clyde when we first got it. I'm always surprised how fast new dogs figure out how to use it when they visit. All they need is a role model to show them how!
