Tree sap in puppy coat... help?

Leonard spent the day playing outside, when he came inside and fell asleep I began brushing out his hair. When I looked at his stomach and front legs I noticed they are coated in pine tree sap [how? we have one tiny pine tree n the very corner of the yard...] I have tried combing it out and wiping it out. Shampoo doesn't seem to get it and the more I work at it the more tangled his little belly becomes. Luckily he is patient and tired enough to sleep through most of my efforts. Any ideas on how to spare Leonard any more of my experimentations?

On the plus side he smells forrest fresh

I wonder if peanut butter would work. It does take out gum from hair. You smear a small amount in the hair and work it out. White vinegar might work as well since it is a natural degreaser.

Thanks; it was only after I posted that I saw another recent post on the subject. We used some vinegar and it began to lift it. Theres no escaping the fact he will need a bath. He is such a messy puppy he had one last week too. As long as I use very mild puppy shampoo is it ok to bath often? He is a mud monster and even after drying and brushing out twice his beautiful white puppy coat is a dull grey colour. Paws and belly are so bad... he is still adorable and loveable despite his love of all things dirty.
I ended up mostly clipping it out of Ava's coat when that happened, but it was a small teeny patch. I know that olive oil has been mentioned as being effective in getting it out too. Good luck!

Oh, and I remember when Ava was that age, she was ALWAYS filthy.
Puppies are like children......well, they are children. They explore their world though touch and taste. I suggest less baths, no more than once a week and lots of brushings inbetween. You don't want to dry out their skin or hair. This pup fluff does seem to hold dust, mature coarse hair is better. Maybe he'll let you vacuum him.......with training.
We constantly have this problem.... And, I have just given up and I cut the yuck out!
For future reference I stumbled upon something that works wonders on tree sap, it is the ear cleaning solution that I got form the vet. I was cleaning Leonard's ears and there was sap on the flaps. I accidentally got some ear cleaning solution on the part of the ear that had sap. I rubbed it and it went all bubbly. I brushed it was a slicker brush and the tree sap brushed right out. I tried it one a big chunk on his belly and it worked, pour on, suds it up and brush out with a slicker. Then rinse out thoroughly.
