Do I look like the Humane Animal Welfare Society?

First a chipmunk, now a rabbit! I was outside with the dogs and Gar kept barking at Simon. In the house he goes. As soon as I closed the door, Simon runs to the other side of the yard and pokes something with his nose. I call him back to me(and he came :) ) and look closer at this lump he poked. Why does it have to be alive, struggling to move? Head up and alert, front legs could move but not the back.

I called our local Humane Society and after a lengthy message, they said leave a message. I call an animal control place and it would cost $135.00 to remove it and put it to sleep. I call the neighbor and she says nah ah.

Dh is back at work and he calls me on his break. I'm in tears by now thinking this poor thing is probably in pain and terrified. It doesn't look like its going to die anytime soon and the dogs can't go in the back yard.

He leaves work and comes home(what a guy!). I ask him what he's going to do. He says you don't want to know. He goes out to look and moves the back legs a little and the rabbit pulled back. I said maybe he can be saved. I grab a box and an old towel and he scoops him up and puts him in the back of my SUV and I transfer to to the Humane Society.

Yea, I'm a BIG wuss but I can't stand to see something in pain.

Think you did the right thing.
Pam, you did the right thing. Any suffering animal, wild or domestic, should be put out its pain. Thank you for doing what you did.
Carl hauled a baby bird to the wild animal shelter several miles away from Grafton. Tripper had the bird in his mouth but we think it was injured before he got it.
...and?
This will be contentious, I am sure, surely it would be more humane to put an injured animal out of its misery straight away? rather than traumatising it further by taking it somewhere in a car?

Other wild animals would have no compunction against ripping it apart while it was still alive.

Funny how we use the term HUMANE when you think of all the things humans do to each other................
On a lighter note, a baby bird, robin, I think, fell out of its nest about a month ago. My intrepid bird dog (that would be Che) scooped it into his mouth. Upon much screeching by me, he dropped it, I grabbed it, nothing seemed broken so I put it on top of a wood pile near the nest and took the dogs inside. Later I come out and to make a long story short, the bird seemed to have either (a) death wish or (b) a crush on Che, because no matter WHERE I put the damn thing, it kept finding Che, who, like any self-respecting dog was probably thinking toy at the very least, lunch being another distinct possibility.

After 36 hours of unscheduled meetings (the dogs had to potty every now and again, you know) it finally took off (or was eaten, who knows) What really scares me is that he survived and will live long enough to reproduce. Nature is supposed to be very good at culling, including the dim-witted, but some times I wonder. Like the fool squirrel at my mom's house whose hobbies included sneaking up on her cats while they were sunbathing and pulling their tails!

Even mother nature has a sense of humor, apparently.

Pam, I know where you're coming from. It's hard.

Ever read the Darwin awards? They prove that Nature gets it wrong with humans often.
