Too Darn Hot!!!! (Trivial complaint thread)

In the big scheme of things with weather around the country I am most fortunate.

Still I thought it might relieve some of the crankiness that accompanies the heat to share some of the ways the heat is curbing some of our summer activities.

I opted out of agility class tonight because it is held in a barn with no cooling system.
For those of you who know me, that was a rather sensible decision on my part for Harry's benefit when I am usually not sensible when it comes to agility.

We may have to compensate with a trip for a doggie sno cone.
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
The doggie snow cone sounds like a plan!

It is so darn hot here too--I took the boys for an ice cream this afternoon--because they have been in the house all day! We needed to get out.

The weather here has been hot but low humidity--now we are in for the humidity for the next 7 days! Ick! 108 with high humidity forecast for Saturday-- 8O

I really don't like summer! :(
Judi you can harry can jump on a plane and visit us, winter here, friggin cold

Brie says she will share her bed with handsome harry :hearts:
Summer did not used to be like this. I went to my new school and worked today. I am so lucky that my room is air conditioned.
The place where we used to get Carley a frozen yogurt is closed. She whines when we go past there but now there is an insurance office there. I don't think she would enjoy that much.
We are due to get high 90's for the next week with high humidity. :x

I am beginning to think I like any other season but summer. The problem is that is the only time I am off work.
Stay cool everyone. :) :)

Bonnie/Carley's Mom
Lisa wow we would love to visit you down under!!!!! 8)

Harry would be too busy trying to get Brie running around and playing. She would be tired of him within minutes of arriving. And he is the worst beggar in the whole world so you would be sick of him too every time you ate.

But we can dream can't we about if it was easier to cross the ocean to cool off and a Sheepie playdate?
You guys need to have winters like we have here in central New York. Then you'll appreciate the non-winter months.
I'll take the hot humid weather any day over the cold, damp, cloudy, snowy weather that we get for 8 months out of the year.
Gosh Mark, that sort of defeats the point of dreamin doesn't it?

No harsh winters or swelter summers for me and my Sheepdog!
Just perfect agility weather.
I think the doggie sno cone sounds like a better idea! I'm sure Harry does too!

I'll take your dream Judy. We DID go to agility class...no air...and though we learned some, it was too hot. Simon who usually runs in front of me was lagging behind...and I don't do front crosses very well.

So you are moving to California?!
We've had Tropical Storm Debby hanging off the coast for a few days north of here, so kinda rainy this past week. The weather peeps are going crazy because today is supposed to be our first really nice day in about a week. They say its going to be hot 91 degrees. 91 degrees in the Summer is not hot for Florida, 95 or above qualifies if you ask me.

So if you want to cool down, come to Florida. :santa: :tree:

Now that would be ideal.
I guess we all have to move to San Diego. :)

But you can only take off so many clothes without getting arrested.
It's 9 AM, 84 degrees out. I just took the trash to the pickup station. When I got out of my cool car, my glasses immediately fogged up. Too humid and hot.
The pets don't want to cuddle, which is okay since it is hot.

My daughter is working in SF right now. She keeps sending me her weather reports - rubbing it in. But she is moving back here in August, when the highs average over 100.
Heh. It's supposed to be 104 here today. And the monsoons are late. I haven't been able to take Ava anywhere except after the sun goes down, or early in the morning. With this heat, it's taking a good half hour for the A/C in the car to even begin to touch the 120 degree inferno in there. Ugh, I can't do that to her.
Complaining about the heat is not trivial. For me, the heat is more dangerous than the cold. I get physicially sick when it's hot. I can handle winter but get depressed in summer.
Ha summer in Florida...Heat, Humidity, humidity, humidity! Then there are the tropical storms or hurricanes. can't walk to the mailbox without almost passing out. Dogs don't want to go out.

However today is beautiful! About 84 low humidity. Yay! This weekend we will bake.

I do love it here, but wish i could be somewhere else in the summer.
But Roz, I'd rather 104 and dry than 95 and humid! I have mixed feelings about monsoon here. "late" is not late until mid July and then panic! Noticing long range, you are in the higher than average moisture core beginning mid July and going 90 days. I'm in EC.......equal chance .....meaning maybe, maybe not. Unfortunately we are both in the higher than avg temp cone as well. So prepare for the stickies!

There is no frigging way I'd live in a humid climate!
I am hoping to be in the new house by monsoon season Susan. The new house has AC. Right now, I have swamp coolers. And you KNOW how well those work in humidity.
Miserable here in WI too, high dew pts again and of course high humidity plus the temps and the feels like temps. Butchy balks at going out and that is not like him. Me too.
Paula O. wrote:

Paula, you have my sympathies. Had heat exhaustion about 10 years ago so the heat makes me sick too. And I live in the desert. We've been in triple digits for a while now. I usually bail for northern California in the summer, but have had to stay this year for some medical stuff.

Here's a few tricks I've learned:
1. Celebrate summer like you were a kid again.
Do the fun things that you used to do when you couldn't wait until Summer Vacation!
Eat a lot of Popsicles (sugars free, 15 calories!)
Listen to the music that was popular in the summer when you were a teenager.
On days I dont need to leave the house, the first thing I put on is my bathing suit, the cover up is near the front door in case I actually have to answer the door! It makes me feel like I'm 10 again!
Tie dye was popular when I was teen, so I wear a lot of it. Don't be afraid to take the scissors to it to make sleeves smaller and turn a regular t shirt into a V neck...so much cooler.
Choose a bright nail polish that you wouldn't normally wear but is fun!

2. Celebrate summer - adult style.
Program in some getaways that get you out of your heat.
Trip to a lake, higher altitude mountains where it is cooler - that sort of thing. Then not only do you get some relief, you get to focus on your getaway when you're in misery.

Treat yourself.
Keep fresh flowers in your house. Never the same. Always something you can only get in the summer. Lol, doesn't make you cooler, but makes you feel better. Pretty is always cheerful.

Your blender is your friend.
Make every sort and color of slushie drink you can think of. I use Crystal Light as a base, they have some great favors and are great for alcohol free drinks too.  If you have to have a bit of a buzz, use white wine. Though the less alcohol, the better. It just makes you hot and dehydrates.

Eat light.
Eat only the stuff that is fresh and available in the summer: tomatoes, corn, zucchini, cucumbers. If you live somewhere there are road side stands that sell these, great! If not, make getting to them one of your trips every other week.

Breyers has a new line of ice cream called Slow Churned. It has half the fat, sweetened with Splenda and is amazingly good with far fewer calories. Eating ice cream, Popsicles and iced things brings down your body temp and cools you down in a very happy way! Calcium is good for women. 8)

Find recipes that are lighter and don't involve your usual cooking style/methods that heat your house. Crock pots, grilling, when in doubt... Grill it!

Starbucks (and other drive thrus) are your friend. I like Starbucks because they have healthier choices. But the point is, don't get out of the car unless you have to. That way you can take the dogs out for an adventure too.

3. Surviving summer: the fundamentals.

Wear less clothes.
Don't wear shorts when you could wear a short skirt or a dress.

Always wear sandals.
If you have to wear shoes, Keen makes sandals that cover your toes and if needed can be worn with cotton socks. It seems like all the sneakers manufacturers make a line with mesh. They're cool if you don't wear socks with them.

Wear lighter clothes.
That gauze material from Mexico ROCKS. (Maria de Guadalajara and Oh My Gauze are two lines that use it.) It's like wearing nothing. Also, amazingly, those sheer blouses that you have to wear a tank under are good. They're made of poly, so you wouldn't think so, but they are amazingly cool. AVOID denim under all circumstances. We B Bop makes the coolest dresses I've found. They are all too long so they get shortened to knee length. And NONE of my clothes are tight, I opt for the air circulation over current trend. Light weight cottons are a must. Oh and change your leather purse to a fabric bag. Leather against your body in hot weather is too damned toasty.

Get outside when you can.
Vitamin D is important, so you need some sunlight. Avoid going out when it's hottest (that's 10AM to 4PM here.)

Drink your morning wake up beverage outside if you are an early riser. Mornings are always cooler.

Take the dogs for a walk in the late evening and early morning. Everyone will benefit from the exercise.

Bathe your dogs outside if you don't have a pool. They get the relief and so do you because you'll both be wet!

Fans rock.
I have a number of fans for outside. Ryobi makes a battery operated fan that is popular on the dog show circuit. I use a small cooler of ice that I prop behind it and you have old school air conditioning everywhere. (Old school desert trick is to have a fan in every room in addition to A/C. Make them floor fans and your dogs will love it too.)

I also have a portable umbrella that has a stand that lives in my car during the summer- Just in case!

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
Once you've had heat exhaustion you are more sensitive to heat. So you must hydrate more. Smart Water or flavored kinds that have electrolytes are a must. Not just GatorAid that has salt and sugar. Avoid alcohol and caffeine. If not remember to add in an extra two glasses for each of those you drink.

One more tip....
Okay, I have no idea if this is healthy for you but it works for me.  If I'm facing some really hot weather, I'll take two aspirin morning and night for a week prior to having to do hot weather. Aspirin thins your blood and makes the high temps a wee bit easier. I usually resort to this if I am returning to the desert from spending a great deal of time away. It speeds up what would normally occur naturally. But you should make certain this is okay with your doctor before you do it.

In other words, embrace summer like you would Christmas... Decorate, live life differently and enjoy (without all that crazy shopping!)

Good luck Paula...and everyone else during this very trying La Niña year!

Off to the pool!

Here is Chowder taking up ALL the shade she can find at the dog park

Just heard the Tropical Moose has packed up and moved to Alaska. Left no forwarding address and won't return until winter.

Now you have something worth complaining about! :headbang:
This is what my car read today at 3PM--don't think I have ever seen it that high-

Broke a record here today--record was 104--we reached 105 --also learned that they take the official high temp --in the shade 8O

Lower humidity today so heat was desert like--tomorrow the humidity is supposed to build--then we will have a sauna 108 predicted for tomorrow.
We hit 98 here, with a heat index of 105. Yuck!
It's supposed to stay hot all week, looks like we are all going to be doing a lot of swimming!
The worst part of summer is my worry about my horse. Obviously he can't go where it's air conditioned. Yesterday it hit 100 here which it hasn't done in 7 years. Bob was pretty sweaty when I got to the barn. I hosed him (I don't know who got wetter!) and got the sweat off. Hopefully he felt better. I was out there for about an hour and a half and when I left my face was bright red and I was sick to my stomach. But I have to make sure he's all right.

Quail Trail, thank you for your guide to summer. There are some good ideas that I hadn't thought of. I'll be needing it since the weather guy said "it is going to be a hot, dry summer."
Karen,
Was that picture taken right at start-up after the vehicle had been sitting for awhile?

I've noticed that the thermometers in cars always read high after the vehicles have been sitting for awhile. As soon as the vehicle starts moving, the temp will lower to the actual air temp.

Not that it takes away from how hot it is. You guys are absolutely BAKING in the mid-part of the country!
We get a little hot here this weekend; about 90.
I'm pretty sure that was the actual temp inside her car at that point. Kids and pets die here if left in the car even a "few" minutes....no matter if the window is left partially open.
Paula,

Would misters work in your area? Or the old school method of hosing down the ground and all surrounding hardscape?

Most important thing is to remember that heat exhaustion changes your body's cells ability to absorb water. It is a medical condition. Be careful. That naseua and resulting exhaustion is a symptom of your body telling you that you are in trouble. We've had three people die from it this year and it's not the worst part of the summer yet.

I'm so sorry. I know how difficult it is. 109 to 111 here today.

Good luck Paula!

Wow. 8O A miserable weather thread where I get to be the one gloating instead of whining!  :high5:

its been mid 60sF-mid 70s here for the most part 8) We still have some chilly mornings (40s) on occasion, but we've finally turned off the furnace for the summer, and broken out the warm weather clothes.

Anybody wants to come visit, and cool off, let me know! :D
Laurel,

Lol, thanks but hopefully I'll be in San Francisco for the month of August. Fewer bugs.

Btw, how do you sleep with 24 hours of sunshine? :D :D :D

It was taken as I got in and it had been sitting awhile--before I even got the key in and started it up--it went up 3 degrees. I do believe that it was that hot in the car as it was a little difficult to even breathe before I got it started and the AC on. I had just never seen it that high before--even sitting!

We hit 108 today--high in the shade :(

There are several popular coping mechanisms:

1-blackout curtains
2-Just get used to it
3-Stay up all hours and enjoy it, because, hey...summer is short!
