Purina Pro Plan Shredded Blends

So I know a few people here feed there dogs the Pro Plan shredded plan. After many trials and errors we learned that the chicken and rice is good for Chowder's not so strong tummy.

Problem: She is getting bored.

What we've tried: putting freeze dried meet on top, mixing in rice, yogurt, etc... but she still ends up bored.

Future:What I read is that some of you feed your dogs the Beef & Rice and the Lamb & Rice so I went looking for it only to find it doesn't come in large breed. Is it okay to feed a dog over 50lbs a none large breed formulated food?

I mix a little of the Pro Plan wet food into Brick's dry Pro Plan and he eats it right up.
Maybe try that.
Mine eat the Lamb & Rice shredded blend. Doesn't say anything about large breed on it. They have done fine on it for years.
W also feed both Sheepies ProPlan Lamb & Rice shredded blend. For a twist, we add a 1/4 cup or so of Kraft, (Jen insists on the good stuff!) shredded cheddar cheese and mix it up. They NEVER get bored with cheese!!!

Arielle: We feed Dahlia the shredded Beef and/or Lamb because of boredom. I usually run over to Petco at the circle to pick it up. Dahlia seemed a bit bored recently with those as well, so I have now added Fromm to the mix and she seems to love it. Have you tried Fromm? You can get it at a more local pet-store. I am not sure if the big box pet stores have it. I just ran down the street by my house to our local small place. (Country Pet in Lebanon)

Since there was a big string on here about Fromm, I jumped on the band-wagon w/ the coupon that was being offered and went and got some last week. Dahlia is doing well with that mixed in..... but.......she can eat anything and never have a problem.
My SIL's golden eats Fromm bec/ she has a terrible tummy and does really well on it. You might want to try that. If you don't want a whole bag, I can give you some for Chowder to try. We have three different bags here bec/ I had the coupon if you buy a bag, you get a bag for free----and then my pet store gave me an extra bag for free as another promotion.... I left with 3 bags of dog food and only paid $22.
(I will send you an email or a text---need to have a playdate soon! It is swimming weather and Dahlia is shaved and ready)
We also feed the Lamb & Rice shredded blend - it's not the large breed formula. Sometimes, for variety's sake, we switch to beef or chicken.

On a side note, has anyone noticed how they're putting in less of the "light & fluffy" pieces lately? Seems like the last several times we've bought food, the bags have fewer and fewer of them. :?
I notice because my step-daughter's little 5lb. Shi Tzu mix visits us, he "pilfers" what we call the "light & fluffy" pieces and leaves all the "hard & crunchy" pieces in the bowl. It's getting harder & harder for him to find the pieces he likes.
Mine are on pro plan chicken and rice blend, not large breed. I tried the shredded blend for a bit of variety for them but I think it goes rancid so I stopped buying it. Just smelled funny fairly quickly.
Thanks all. We do the wet food sometimes too but it gets messy and smelly. When dry Chowder will actually pick the chicken out and leave the kibble. The shredded beef and rice doesn't seem to be any more enticing. Cheese is old too, she picks out the pieces the have cheese. We've been adding "Stella & Chewy's" freeze dry beef but that will get old on too.

She's NEVER been a good eater but I haven't given up yet its 7pmnright now and she's just earing for the first time all day with some coaxing because she ignored her breakfast. Ugh!
Have you tried cottage cheese?
Try a grated cheese, like pecoriello-romano or locatelli.
When Brick's being picky about eating, I sprinkle a little of that on his food & he gobbles it right up.
But don't use the stuff you find on your supermarket shelf (like Kraft). That stuff is no good.
Get the real stuff from either the dairy or deli section of your supermarket or better yet, go to a real Italian store & get some there.
We recently took about 2 drops of A1 steak sauce and a bit of water and mixed it up and put it over her food like gravy... that went over well....

Maybe Chowder just needs a sibling!!!! I find that when there is another dog here or Dahlia is at someone else's house with another dog, she eats everything with no hesitation!

Funny you say this as we JUST bought a new bag Sunday and my first reaction was 'WOW! Look at all the soft bits!' This bag seems to have about 60 % of the soft bits and 40% of the crunchy ones. Our girls are LOVIN it!

Sometimes I think it is how the bags "settle". I just picked up 2 bags yesterday. I usually only buy 1 at a time but they had 10% bonus bags (3.5# extra in each bag for the same price) so I picked up 2! Using my Purina checks it really made a nice savings.
We store our food in a bin, so the food was poured into the bin and I actually noticed the mix AS I was pouring... It seemed pretty consistent all the way through.

Question - I'm interested in this food, or maybe the Fromms because of Ava's sensitive tummy - but how long does she have to be on a "puppy food"?
I was thinking Marilyn meant the BIG batches and how things settle out. It starts out as tons of food in the batch, then each bag is more "single serving". So the bags in the 1st part of the run could end up different than the end of the run.
I can see how this could happen with a product like this that has different weight ingredients like this one does.

This actually brought back good memories for me. My FIL worked his whole life at Hubbard Milling, and the last 15 yrs or so worked in the plant that mixed rations and bagged them. He was the PM shift supervisor for the whole plant. Because he was gone over supper time, we always brought him in his supper - hot supper, served on a plate - they lived just a couple miles from the plant. When Todd or I were out there visiting, it was the highlight of the day for us and the grandkids to bring Grandpa his supper. Walking in the plant, you could tell by smell what kind of food was being made :D
One day it might be dog food, another horse food....

I switched Dahlia at about 6 months gradually by adding more and more adult food.

Bond and his sisters were raised on Fromm's Gold LB puppy (deep aqua bag), and Kristine and I switched them at the 5-6 month old stage to an adult ration. We both rotate foods, so they are on/have been on several foods by now.
If I remember correctly, I think it was about 6-7 months when Chewie was switched to adult food. I think Kristine switched his sisters about the same time as well.

Because we rotate foods, ours do pretty much "cold turkey" switches. We both have VERY multiple dog households, and we both just switch the whole group. Neither of us have difficulties.
Thanks Shari - she's almost 5 months now, we'll finish our bag of Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy, and maybe start mixing in the Pro Plan with Blue Buffalo over the next few months.

I take my puppies off puppy food around 5-6 months of age. If she has a really sensitive tummy, try Purina ProPlan Sensitive Skin & Stomach. I had a boy with a sensitive intestinal tract & this worked wonders on him.
I think Caitlyn was switched about 6 or 7 months and mostly because she was more interested what her big sis was eating...

That makes sense. I guess we've just gotten the random bags that have fewer pieces lately. :| Toto (the Shi Tzu/Poodle mix) is writing a letter to Purina requesting a bag of JUST light & fluffies.

Marilyn - we do that too - buy 2-3 when they're on sale or have the bonus size bags.

Chowder is wondering if she could put her paw print on that letter too. She picks those pieces out and leaves the hard ones. Such a waste of money for me THOUGH it's a great time consumer for her.
