Mulch, Poo, Teeth, Paws - hitting all in one post lol

Ok....so I have a bunch of questions...let's get to it:

Mulch - Kenny still has not broken the habit of chewing on and sometimes eating mulch. I have no idea how to break this as mulch is everywhere from walks, to yards, to wherever! He's never had any bad side effects that we can tell but it still makes my nervous

Teeth and Poo in One! - So I went to our pet store and they recommended Proden PlagueOff for teeth. They had heard better things than greenies and it's much cheaper. I noticed after about 2 days of half servings (which is a seaweed powder and you sprinkle on food), he had very soft poo and one day basically went all over outside. I had him off for a day and he was back to normal. So one....is this like food and work it in slowly and do you think that's what is messing up his poo?

Paws - I've noticed him chewing/licking his front paws a lot more than normal. We haven't changed his food at all and we've been in this house for almost 4 months. I can't think of any allergy that he would have developed or anything and the paws are not matted or red. The ONLY thing i can think of is that they re-paved our street and I have run down it a few times with him this last week to get some energy out. Ideas?

You guys always rock the responses so looking forward to getting your input.

Let's add on one more!

We want to bake him a dog cake for his Bday but nervous it will result in runny poo (sorry i like to say poo). Thoughts?

Rob,

As for the food, we feed Caitlyn Purina ProPlan Lamb and Rice. Her poo is always a good solid form and her teeth are great. She RARELY gets anything soft, (except treats during ring times) - theory here is that all the crunchy stuff help keep her teeth cleaner than if she was eating softer stuff. The ProPlan also helps keep her coat as good as it can be.

As for the paws thing... My knee jerk reaction is to look at her hair between her pads for tiny matts. Even the smallest of matts between the pads will drive a dog mad in no time.

Did the licking/chewing coincide with whatever you were giving him for plaque product? If it had a bad reaction on one end, there could have been other effects. I'd look closely at the ingredients just in case you come across something else down the road he doesn't tolerate well and maybe you can make a connection?

I give mine shank and some times knuckle bones to clean their teeth. More fun for them, too. They can break a tooth, though, so it's a trade-off.

Mulch. My puppies will chew on it as well. No ill effects, but I too would prefer they would not. Refer back to bones to distract him from mulch?

I think i'll go off that product for a week and see if the paw chewing stops...if it does, then we'll avoid seaweed!!!! Good advice!
I was also thinking the additive being a possible culprit for the foot licking/chewing...Kristine beat me to it!

Mine get the occasional raw bones too - so happy I have a good (and free!!) source for them. :D

Mulch - Bond will eat it too - and dig - so my solution is to leave him out in the fenced dog yard (mulched surface) for only as long as it takes to potty, or I am out there (picking up poop, etc) with him. He still gets a bit, but seeing that it's pretty minimal, and he does chew well (lol), the risk is pretty low. But like you, I don't like to risk it and try to minimize it as much as possible.
Thanks again...he just had a bad poo day again and i had tried it last night. So i think that's the baddy. THANKS!
