New puppy coming home

Hi,

I have been reading the posts on this site for a while - what a great source of information for people new to OES. I'm picking up my new little girl this weekend and I'm really excited - and a bit nervous!

I think I have the house prepared and I will be taking next week off to be with her. I have a question about crating. There is one day a week that I will be gone all day (9-3). Is this too long to crate a pup? Some articles I have read suggest that it would be best for her to be confined to a small room instead. Any suggestions?

Congratulations! Enjoy your new puppy and take lots of pictures because she'll grow and change so fast!

My experience is limited but I think that 9-3 will be too long to leave her alone. We have a dog sitter come in around lunch time to take Bailey out and play with him a bit. I'd recommend it - it will break up her alone time, get her used to socializing with another person and help with her housebreaking. For only 1 day a week the expense will be worth it.
Welcome to the forum! :) And congrats on your pup!
How old is the pup? How long they can hold it goes with age and growth, but if this is a young pup I wopuld suggest someone come home at lunch for the first couple of weeks to let the pup out to pee etc...
Hey! Welcome and Congratulations!!!! You'll have to tell us more about your new baby as soon as you can!! And don't forget Pictures :D

Your pup may be a little young right now (you didn't say how old) but I would think by 12-16 wks he should be able to "hold it" for 6 hours. ANy longer than that might be asking too much.

New puppies are so very exciting and fun! The best of luck to you as you start this new adventure!
They are so much fun. Ijust get my boy 3 weeks ago he has grown alot and gained around 14lbs. He finally can hold his pottie in for 5hrs during the night. Now I only have to get up twice! YAAAAA, I am lucky enough to have someone home with him during the day. I have never crated him and he has been o.k. Best of luck to you and do take lots of pictures cuz they grow fast
Welcome! I think you'll probably want to play it by ear and see how you think she'll do once you have some time to get her adjusted and see her habits. Every dog is different. My Clyde when we got him at 12 weeks, still really loved to pee about every, oh, I don't know, 5 minutes!

All joking aside (although that really wasn't too far off!), coming home at lunch for the first couple of weeks isn't a bad idea. I also did that with Clyde and then we slowly waited longer and longer until he could make it the whole day. On particularly long days, we have a dog walker come, which he and my other dog love-- and my other one doesn't even need the break! But, it's like having kids, what you do for one you gotta do for the other!
hello me and my 11 year old are getting a new puppy i dont know how big it will get but its a french bulldog its just 13 weeks old and i dont know what to get and do for her to get to know our house and our cat!!!!
if there are any websites or you have any informatin please reply to the post with the info or links.
thanks bye
OH, what fun!!

Much of the training informtion on OES also applies to bulldogs, it's kinda dog generic advice
The best suggestion I can offer is be sure to crate train!
Aww new puppies. I miss when Breena was tiny and her teething bites didin't hurt as much. The best thing I found for Bree was I got her a baby blanket to lay on where ever she was and a special toy that she could take with her and sleep with. At almost 5 months she still totes around her blanket and sheep. We had tried a doggy pillow but because she was so small she just rolled off. lol Also do crate train- it is so much easier than not.
