Buckle 'em Up or Contain Them...

It's now becoming law in some states...

They can also prevent a puppy/dog from jumping out the window to their death or bolting from the car in an accident.

What harnesses do you use/recommend?
This is the best one I've found so far- http://oesusa.com/BBSeatBelt.jpg. There may be better ones out there so if anyone comes across one, please let me know? :D

The Pet Buckle http://petbuckle.com/why_petbuckle.htm has metal buckles rather than the plastic ones you see on some seat belts... and it indicates it's been crash tested. But it doesn't have a stationary chest piece. It crisscrosses at the chest with a rubber-type slide that tends to shift. (Maybe I should just stitch it together where it overlaps.) I bought the optional tether but don't use it. The harness has a loop to slip the seat belt through.

I've tried a few others. The others pictured up above are this one- http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/p ... atid=16689 . I like the padded/fixed chest piece but not the plastic clips... I wish they were metal. It may be ok but these things stay in the car so are subjected to big temperature changes.

Another design I tried a few years ago slips over the dog's head but you had to really scrunch up the dog's legs to slip them through the straps. Didn't like the design and returned it because it didn't fit the dog properly.

This design looked good but I haven't tried it. The fit seems good.

Any other ideas anyone? :D
We use Kurgo Smart Harness, it has a good chest pad that doesn't get in their way when they lay down but large enough to appear comfortable. I replaced the tether for a longer one when Dex got big enough that the original one held him too close to sit up comfortably. It also doubles as a harness for quick potty breaks on road trips. Dex really relies on it to hold him on the seat when we stop. Winston is unconscious about it.

I've tried a couple of different ones on my last dogs. For Benson we're using a Champion seatbelt. http://usak9outfitters.com/CCSS.htm It fits her well, and the strap that connects the harness to the car can be used in my Jeep (attaching her to the floor) or hubby's Saab (via the seatbelt). The other thing I really like is that it connects to a pair of rings on the harness, so if the buckle fails, the harness stays put.

She's only 4 months old in this picture. She's 11 months old now, and 60 pounds, but still has plenty of room. In face, we just drove from NY to AZ and back with her (40+ hours each way), and she was comfortable the entire time.
Very good looking girl who have there
"Under New Jersey Statute 4:22-18, unrestrained pets in vehicles is an act of animal cruelty, and drivers who don’t secure their pooch in a pet seat belt will be subject to fines, ranging from $250 to $1,000 and as much as six months in jail"

Our seatbelt looks more like this one but is thicker because Chowder has a harness on when we leave the house anyway I didn't know how we could also use a seatbelt harness mentioned above: http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Leash-Seatbelt-Adapter-Seat/dp/B003TDRMI8

We've been seatbelting her since we stopped crating her in the car at 6 months. Best decision. And she can still put her head out the window if we connect her behind the driver or passenger.
The law is not here on Florida yet. I will be getting one the restraints listed. Thanks
We use the Kurgo harnesses as well. Like that you can also get a Zip-Line with it that gives more freedom in the vehicle on longer trips. Still keeps the dog out of the front seat. You will have to be careful not to open windows too far when using the Zip-Line.
I use the solvit brand It has nice padding and when I had to carry my 95 ln paralized GSD around I used it on him Yes it has plastic clasps but it held up very well. I know there is a piece to hook into the seatbelt but I always just use leashes that way they cannot jump out of the car (but are supposed to be trained to wait) and they can be walked in them (the fleece is hot in the summer)I have nylon leashes that can be shortened and hook them to the metal clasps in the back of my suv This is what I have used for a couple of years I am sure there are new and better ones.
My favorite car harness is the Roadie http://www.ruffrider.com/

I personally use this one for my corgi: http://www.petedge.com/product/Guardian ... /53043.uts
Containment especially in the case of an accident is most important. I always fear for dogs I see loose in cars that if an accident occurs they will be running loose on the highway. Especially when I see someone driving with a dog on their lap & the head hanging out the driver's window! Very sorrowful but helpful experience: I had 2 very close dog show friends. They both helped me get started in showing dogs & encouraged me to continue. They often times helped me out at dogs shows & visa versa. I had know the wife since junior high school. They were traveling home from their national show out west & had an accident that rolled their trailer & van. They both died in the accident but their dog survived because he was contained, in this case in a crate. The accident rescue people said it ws the only reason he survived. Otherwise he'd have been thrown around inside the vehicle. 4-5 days later a frined & I picked him up at the airport & delivered him back to one of the adult children.
We use those short things that hook onto the seatbelt and then clip to their regular harnesses. I'm a little worried that it will be too short for Eevee when she is full grown, but we can always make it longer somehow.
I love how you always have pictures 6girls ...and how if Kobuck wasn't a dog, everyone would swear he came from my family.... he has a HUGE head in that seatbelt photo. ;)
You're so darn funny, Mrs. J.
Love big heads! :hearts:

That picture was from when we were coming home from the airport so he was still under the influence (of you! :D). I wish I could
get him back into that lovely cut!! Poor child has spiraled down to wearing a do-rag and looks like he doesn't even have beard
anymore because he'd been sleeping and smooshed it flat.

I THOUGHT THAT WAS ONE OF YOUR GIRRRRLLLS!!

Didn't even notice the bandana on the head at first because it blends right in. It's funny and super adorable. How long do those stay on w/o being forced off by them? YOU ALWAYS have him and allllllll the other family members looking sharper than I could ever do.

...and SEE! Just showed my kids. they said "that must be kobuck's friend." and think I'm kidding that it's him (not same markings)
:D Here's the big picture- http://oesusa.com/LavenderBoys.jpg

And uh-uh... you had him looking amazing. :hearts:

I only put it on him once so far but he left it on. Dr. Dodds said to try lavender for Bumble for it's calming effects if he goes out in public. I ordered some essential oils and put a little dab on that ol' do-rag or babushka as my grandma would have called it. It was supposed to go around Bumble's neck but I just knew Kobuck would NEVER leave him alone... so I put it on Kobuck first. :P It's that parent psychology thing... you've GOT to know what I'm talking about. 8)
You're so smart!!

That is such a cute picture. Funny how they're "the boys" of the family yet they don't look like the protectors/tough guys at all ....just softies. hahaha
OMG I've GOT to get a do-rag for Ru :hearts:
hehehe
We'll want a picture!
