Goodbye Raffi

I know she's not a sheepdog, but Raffi, my red-eared slider turtle, has been a part of my life since I got her as a teenager. I've always loved turtles and Raffi was the first one I got, in 1988, after seeing her in a pet shop for $9.99, the size of a silver dollar. Pet turtles were a rarity by then, not like 40 years ago. She was joined a year later by 2 more turtles, Peppi and Longtail (who died many years ago). Raffi and Peppi just kept on trucking, turtles and tortoises can live an incredibly long time and I expected Raffi to outlive me. One of the highlights was the 20th birthday "party" we held for them, we invited friends and relatives who had kids, and we had Ray's Reptile Zoo put on a demonstration in our backyard with snakes, lizards, crocs etc. It was real fun, Raffi and Peppi pretty much hid in the pond for it, but I'm sure they appreciated the sentiment! We had just put the turtles out in the pond for the summer a few weeks ago, Gracie got to meet them and was super excited.

Here they were on May 18 when I was putting them out to their summer pond. Raffi was the fearless one, never hid in her shell, nothing scared her, not even having 3 big sheepdogs in her face. Peppi is the opposite :)

Here was Mady meeting Raffi for the first time nearly 2 years ago:

Raffi sunning herself and enjoying her summer home:

I know Raffi was just a turtle, and though I've had her for 24 years, it's not quite the same connection as with a dog. I am heartbroken though. I hope no one minds I posted here. I hope she's sunning herself on a big rock in the sunshine across the bridge.

Doesn't matter what kind of animal or reptile, you were attached and poor Raffi died. It hurts. My thoughts are with you.
I'm so sorry David. We love turtles also. They are very special.
I'm sure Raffi is sunning herself on a rock somewhere.
Troy says you can have one of the babies that hatch from our lake turtles.

I'm so sorry to hear about your turtle! I think its hard when we have pets that go on for such a long time; you get to thinking they'll always be there, and then when the day comes that they aren't the void the leave is tremendous. :ghug:
I'm sorry for your loss of Raffi. My brother had a box turtle for a while and you do become quite attached. After he was forced to give him to the Trailside Museum we visited as often as possible. :(

Godspeed, Fearless Raffi.
David my siblings and I had a pet turtle when we were kids.

He/she?? was very intelligent and interacted with us a lot. We decided he was a he and called him Tommy Turtle. I know, I know so unoriginal. He knew when we were bringing him worms for lunch and we could hand feed him.

He had been found on one of the local roads, we lived near a swamp so he came from there. I wouldn't keep him now but 40 years ago we thought it was a great idea.

Mr Smarty eventually figured out how to use the corner of the paling fence and the wire fence to climb the fence.
His first bolt for freedom down our driveway was in the middle of the day and he was spotted. The grass in his pen was mowed and we watched carefully to see that he couldn't climb out.

Being a smart turtle his next bolt for freedom was at night. We didn't see him for dust, ahem, perhaps a slight exaggeration. Good bye Tommy!

At least we had the consolation of imagining him happy in the swamp somewhere.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss of Raffi. :ghug: They're not so cuddly but they are very interesting creatures.
I am so sorry for your loss!
I am so sorry for the loss of your turtle, Raffi. How lucky you were to have had her for so long, wow

Tears,
David, I'm so sorry for your loss of Raffi. You can tell she was very special to you. I hope Peppi is able to adjust to life without her partner in crime, Raffi.

Raffi, enjoy the sun on the other side of the bridge and say a warm hello to all of our friends who went before.
David I'm so sorry to hear of Raffi's passing. I turtlesat for a friend while he was overseas in college and they can be characters in their own ways. What a long good life you gave to your friend. I hope the good memories outweigh the heartache soon. XO
I'm so sorry, David. :(

I'm sure Raffi is in turtle heaven now. I loved the video of her - so curious!

Do you have any idea what happened - was she sick or anything?
I'm very sorry for the loss of your special friend.
You gave her a perfect home for many years.
David,

So sorry for your loss! :(
She's not just a turtle -- she was a long-time member of your family. We don't only care about sheepdogs or dogs generally. That's a way longer relationship than any I've had. I am sorry for your loss and glad you shared her story and pictures.
David, I'm sorry for your loss. :(
:ghug:
So sorry to read of Raffi's passing. Raffi sounds like he had a great life with you, summer home and all.
Any animal can be a great friend and pet, and we miss them keenly. I cried when our sons' bearded dragon died, not so much for the passing of the tarantula though :sidestep:
She was a part of your life for a very long time. She was family. I am sorry to hear she has passed. But wow 24 wonderful years!
I'm so sorry for your loss. Thanks for introducing us to your beloved turtles.
