For my St Louis friends...more "with"

OK, Judi, Val and who ever else is confounded by the MN habit of ending sentences with "with".....

Ex: "I am going to the store, do you want to come with?"

Well, here is an excerpt from the church bulletin from today (I'm at work, I go to church with my client and spouse when I work on Sundays).
This is part of the sermon outline and worksheet:

Wait, if people don't end their sentences in with, what do they end it with?? I didn't know that was a weird thing. People here in IN/MI end sentences using with, too.

I personally never thought it was unusual, so it cracks me up that those in St Louis think this is so unique and crazy... To me it's just normal!
Really? You end with, with? :lmt:
Is it OK to say...Dawn...you are a smart A@@ on a Sunday ????????

:P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P

:ghug:
Hey, if the midwesterners want to make fun of the upper midwesterners language, we can make of the St. Louis/midwestern accent.
They pronounce the "or" sound as "ar". And instead of saying "get rid of it", they say "get red of it".

Sorry guys. Fair is fair.

:sidestep:
I think you all have accents, you silly Americans-it is part of your charm! As for ending a sentence with 'with', it makes me giggle every time. I always want to ask 'with who'? Or should that be 'with whom'?
Ha, and I just watched Mike Holmes...so guess I got my dose of Canadian accents tonight...eh? ;)
silly americans is right, if they don't have a heavy accent, then they think they have none.
ask a profiler and you'll find everybody does. 8)
some are just more polite than others. :D
:sidestep:
:D I don't 'cast stones'--I am cursed with the Tennessee Twang! :D
and thank everyone for not mentioning West Virginia  99.9% of natives here can distinguish who is from which county of West Virginia
Ok can someone explain please. Who does and who does not end their sentences with 'with'?

I've read a few novels where the 'with' crops up. But you only use it when you can't be bothered adding 'me', don't you?
Like 'do you want to come with?' as opposed to 'do you want to come with me?'

It is certainly not a Canadian thing and I think that it is localized to certain parts of the U.S.

As for the accents, I LOVE accents. I love the variety of them and how you can have a relatively small geographical region and have many accents. I am from Newfoundland, the province in Canada with probably the most recognizable accent, although I keep it tucked away. Only Guinness can bring it out now!
I live in Florida, the melting pot of accents from all over the world. I am originally from the Midwest, Michigan, the Metro Detroit area and don't end my sentence with "with". I would end the sentence "with me." I seem to have a mixed accent, my parents are from Vermont, so I pronounce alot of my words as they would from that area. My Dad used to use the "eh yup" a lot. :) I've been told many times that I have a "Boston" accent. My kids always got a kick out of how I pronounce words and would laugh. When we first moved to Florida, I went thru a McDonald's and asked for a cup of coffe and they had no idea what I was asking for. sheesh.

My first husband's family was from Asheville, North Carolina and when I met his Mom/Dad I was 16. We sat in his livingroom while they chatted away to me...finally after a bit of time went by, I turned to my ex and asked him "what are they saying? I've not understood a thing they've said to me." I soon learned to listen v e r y carefully and I would understand them through their accent. lol

My present husband's mother was from Berlin, Germany.....another accent...:)
Biggie here is to end sentences with "No?" We are going to the store, no? The favored exclamation here in the valley is IIIIIEEEEE.

Problem with Mike Holmes is the various trades come in and so many are European immigrants and they add their accent to the mix. Mike's accent is minimal, Damien has far more.

Miss Minnesota accents......DH's family from there. Love regional accents, problem is I'm like a myna bird and quickly mimic when talking to people....IIIEEEE, don't mean to, no?

Soooo true. Spanglish is big down here.

That said, I am from St. Louis area originally, and I still end sentences with "with". "Are you coming with?" However, when I lived in New Orleans, it was hilarious to me to hear people say "What time it is?" That used to drive me nuts. That and everyone calling everyone else "baby".
I don't have an accent. :sidestep:

Took the words right out of my mouth...my Alabama/Georgia/plain ol' southern accent mixed with speed confuses everyone...or at least they look at me with a look of ...."huh?" :?

My family is from Illinois originally on one side ....and my maiden name is Olson. The first person I met from Minnesota fascinated me with the "accent" from Minnesota and my dad quickly schooled me that many of my family from our family tree are from Minnesota :) :) .

So - I have the southern twang mixed with speed of somewhere else. :?

My favorites accents are true Cajun from Louisiana and the islanders off the coast of South Carolina (can't remember the name). Those 2 are fascinating.

And, naturally, I could listen to all my British friends for hours on end :)
When I lived in New Orleans, I worked at a Brookstone store (you know, the store that sells all the weird fancy gadgets etc) in the Riverwalk Mall. I was on "greeter" duty one afternoon, when a family of about 6 walks in, and starts talking to me. I couldn't understand a word. I knew it wasn't any language *I* had heard before. I was seriously confused. So I went and got my manager, a New Orleans native. She happily conversed with the family, and got them what they wanted.

Afterwards, I asked her "So, can you explain to me how you were able to speak with them? I couldn't understand a single word!" She told me they were hardcore Cajun, from WAAAAAAY in the bayou, and that eventually, I'd learn to understand it.

I never did. But it was certainly an education in the extremes of accents!

I admit, I wasn't expecting your strong accent! And Mike has the same accent no? I wasn't sure where it was from.
I love the Cajun accent, don't understand it well but it's pretty. Of course Aussie and Scottish I think is wonderful too.

Being from WI I don't have an accent.
Can you guys tell the difference between Scottish and Aussie accents.
When DH was travelling around the US for work many years ago, he was told he was from the same country as the Scotsman with the broad Scottish accent who had checked in before him. He was gobsmacked as he could barely understand the Scotsman himself.

Kim and I can tell Scottish, Welsh, Irish, Aussie, and some of the specific English accents apart easily, but we're Canadian, part of the Commonwealth and all that. Unlike those traitorous Yankees!

I can tell the difference, but that may because I spent 6 weeks in Australia. I also watch a lot of BBCA and Masterpiece...which may make me more able to recognize a British accent? With British accents I may not know where they are from, regionally, but I can hear a difference between them.
Hmmm..... Down here in southeastern Indiana we don't end sentences using "with". Picking up some great coastal South Carolinian from all the time we spend here. Starting to sound more like a Rebel than a Yankee. Keeps people guessing.
