Food suggested labels

I was wondering. On the side of the dog biscuits it says how many grams per day to feed your dog on depending on the weight. Does anybody actually follow this?

Bloo is on Beta Large breed and it says he should be having 370g-580g per day.

I just leave his water bowl down with a bowl of biscuits beside the water. And he has his liver/heart/kidney (whatevers in the fridge) at 5pm for his supper.
Our agility trainer said you shouldnt leave the biscuits down all day for him to pick on because he is old enough to eat 3 times a day now. But to be honest bloo hardly ever eats the biscuits. He is a meat eater. I found he quite likes `frolic` but he hs got bored of it now :(

Bloo seems to be happy in his routine of food so....

You are cutting him down to 3 meals per day? 8O What were you doing before?

I believe in smaller meals opposed to one biggie but feed mine 2x a day max. They do get a snack with the pre-bed pills, but it is very small.

The fact he isn't eating his biscuit tells me he isn't hungry. Good Bloo.
No, im not feedng times a day.

I leave a bowl of biscuits down all day so he can eat them when he feels hungry.
And at 5pm he has his tin of meat and his bedtime treat. Its what we do with the cats so bloo has the same routine

He doesnt eat many biscuits, i think its a waste really :P

I only feed him at 5pm becasue he doesnt eat at all during he day, he sleeps LOL he might have a munch at around 1pm but most days he doesnt eat until 5.Theres always food available, because i dont believe in this leave it down 5 minutes then pick it up if its not eaten, bloo just turns his nose upat it LOL :D
So biscuits are the dry food? I think of cookies/treats when you say biscuits 8)

I think the label is a starting point. Then you monitor weight and add or subtract food as needed. If he is at a healthy weight, then keep feeding him the same amount.

Personally I find that I even change the amount of food (slightly) at different times of the year. Some seasons they are more active and burn more calories than others.
I have always fed my dogs 3 times a day! When Summer was really ill the vet suggested doing 3 small meals. So they have Green Dog holistic food slightly dampened because neither of them are great water drinkers. I have to be so careful what I give Summer extra as she has a really sensitive tum, whereas the yorkie eats anything! But she has the same food as Summer. For treats I use Hills t/d from the vets supposed to clean their teeth. I have the large size and when I give Tilly one she tears in the front room with it, as it is too big to eat in one go!
The feeding label is a guide, that's all.

Working in a pet food store I see people overfeeding their pets all the time because they are scared to go lower than the recommended guidelines post.
My 30# corgi eats 2/3 of a cup per day when eating just kibble (usually he gets at least half raw though), and I have never come across a food that recommends less than 1 cup per day for a 30# dog. Usually it recommends 1.5-2 cups a day. If I fed that I would have a hippo instead of a dog, and if I free fed I am pretty sure he would explode :P
He eats the same amount as my boss's 8# chihuahua. Just like people, dogs have different activity levels and metabolisms that are going to impact how many calories they need on a regular basis.

So if he does fine on less food and is happy and active then there really isn't any reason to increase the amount that he is getting.
