Sheepdog Astronomer

I'm Mats, a 2 1/2 year old Old English Sheepdog -- Sheepie to the canine cognoscenti. My people promised me an adventure. I rode in the back of the car for a long time -- something called Google says it takes 4 hours and 15 minutes to go from Sunnyvale to Redding, CA. It took longer -- I had to stop and sniff trees and meet people at various fast food places. I liked the Burger King patty I got at one stop. I met a couple of kids and their dad, a nice dachshund, and another doggie.

I appointed myself as the chief checker of all the smells. My people don't do smells very well -- it's like they have a smell disability. Some smells were different, but something like I am used to. Some smells were really different -- they smelled like different plants and animals than I'm used to. And Benecia smelled like I do when I need a bath, just not as strong. Checking all the smells was hard work and I had to be awake and alert when they changed -- I missed several of my scheduled naps.

We went to a funny place where there was only one room.

Then we went to a vacant lot -- it was close enough to walk, but there was all this stuff I didn't understand so we took the car. We parked. I got out, found a shady spot, and curled up on my rugs from the car. My people did something complicated with boxes and chairs and dark pieces of something they held over their eyes. I thought they might be auditioning for one of "those movies", but there wasn't anyone else around.

Then after a long time, my people were saying "Wow" and "Cool" and other things. And there were lots of birdie noises -- I found out later some of the birdie noises were from frogs -- whatever frogs are. We stayed a while longer and then my people packed up everything and we went back to the funny room. On the way, a nice lady fussed over me rumpling my coat and thumping me on the side. In the funny room, my food bowl, water, and woobie were all there. My chewie, too. A box of my favorite treats, too. And there was enough bed space for me. I slept on my woobie on the bed. Not home, but OK.

There were strange noises and my people had to take me for a walk in the dark -- we didn't see any people, doggies, or cars. There was grumbling, but I ignored it. I had to smell everything for many blocks.

In the morning, we packed up our stuff, got in the car, and drove back home. Once again, I had to sample and assess all the smells.

They asked me how I liked the eclipse. I don't know what an eclipse is. If it was when the birdies and the frogs made noises and the doggies and people I met, then I liked it and I just had an adventure.

I'm having another nap. Adventures are hard work.

Wow, Mats! You certainly get around!

Sounds like an exciting adventure. Here's hoping for many more.

I don't know what an eclipse is exactly either - can you eat it?

Cool adventure Mats.
You're one lucky dude.
Sounds like it was a fun adventure!
Mats you are for more adventuresome than my guys! They slept through the whole thing, indoors while DH and I sat on the front porch and watched. While you didn't understand why the sky darkened early, you surely had a wonderful smell adventure! Hopefully your uprights will take you on more smell trips.....the world is just one giant stinky place!
