New puppy, what to expect?

Hello! My name's Krista and I just acquired a Saint bernard/OES mix puppy that seems to have inherited her OES father's coat, and I'm wondering what I can expect as far as different coat stages as she gets older, and what I will have to look out for in grooming. I have two purebred saints already, so am familiar with their shed-tastic selves, but this new little girl seems not to shed at all.

I have a smooth plush coat male(He has the fur length of a smooth but it's twice as thick as his smooth siblings and mother's for some odd reason. His breeder calls him a smuff) and a rough coated female saint. I normally take a shedding rake to my male every two weeks or so and thats all he needs other than ear cleaning and toenail trimming. My girl I brush through with a pin brush and finish with a slicker, and keep her paw pads shaved flush and her britches trimmed for cleanliness. I also generally have to trim the fur behind her ears because it forms mats very quickly that she doesn't enjoy being brushed out.

So really I guess I'm just looking for insight into this new world of sheepie fur I've gotten myself into.

Also, here is the little munchkin, since everyone loves puppy pics! We have named her Laci(pronounced like Lacy, but my other two are Yoshi and Kali so I wanted to use an i so they'd match). Her mother is an 140lb saint, and her father a 90lb OES.

Also, I'm insanely curious as to if a dog with her fur type could be corded like a Komondor or Burgamesco. I recently read a forum where someone successfully corded their lab/poodle mix, and was intrigued by it. I know the OES has a different fur type than a poodle, but the burgamesco seems to have more of an OES fur type.

First off, she's adorable of course!

As far as the coat goes - it's really hard to say. I'm still dealing with a puppy coat in my OES, and it's my first OES, so I'm sort of going along for the ride too. I think you're just going to have to wait it out and see how the coat develops, because it really could go either way. Just keep her as brushed out as you can, and get her used to it NOW, because I think it goes without saying that she's going to be BIG.

Congrats on your new puppy! Perhaps someone else with more experience can chime in!
your puppy laci is adorable!
there is no saying what sort of coat your going to get though yet. your saint bernard moults as its double coated where as an old english sheds and is wooly coated. i hardly notice billies loss of hair, where as my pomeranian is on a mission to cover to whole house!
when you get a cross breed of any 2 types of mixed coat it does tend to matt alot, its sort of due to being confused on what they are ment to be doing ie shedding or moulting. i see dogs with say the legs moulting and there body wooly and full of undercoat.
get your pup used to grooming as soon as possible. use a bristle brush to get them used the the feel of the brush, then progress to probaly a slicker or a pin brush. as the hair get longer in a few months make sure that your getting down to the skin. have a look at the grooming essay at the top of this page.
old english are much more high maintenence than saint bernards cant wait to see how she going to turn out!
Beautiful pup, will be interesting to see what she looks like when she's older. Love the picture with you baby girl.

Sorry, have no suggestions for her coat.
What a darling puppy! :hearts: I agree, her coat could go either way. It does look more like a St. puppy coat though. I certainly would not try any cording if she has some OES coat. Just tooo cute the way she is and will be. :hearts:
ooooh, what a lovely mix.....if you are mixing. Hope the hips hold firm on such a potentially big girl.

I suspect she'll be similar to the rough coat St.B. Plan in line grooming weekly with the pin, with attention to those friction areas: ears, collar, groing and of course the bloomers in the back. She's have lovely feathers on her legs, but I'd keep them trimmed. Don't forget the tail as they can become rather matted as well.

Will be interesting to see how she shed (like the St.B) or will she require comb-outs like the sheepdog.
THATTTTTTT is a cute mix!! Probably one of my favorites. Love how the puppy is already sleeping just like the baby. haha
Laci is an adorable girl! :hearts: I agree with others that you will probably need to wait and see on the coat. Sheepies have a puppy coat and transition to an adult coat. That is a tough grooming time too--trying to keep them mat free.

Please continue to post pics as she grows!! :D
Isn't SaintOES's (formerly GiGi) Kahlua a St. B and OES mix?

Oh wow, I hope she ends up looking like that! So pretty!
Wow, I think that's pretty close to the way she will look! A bit more white on face top and side, but coloring is darn close. Remembering OES are dark as pups and lighten. Brown being dominant though, she will be a brownie body. Sturdy boned girl.

We had an accidental breeding between a Sibbie and an St. B .......beautiful puppy. Alas he was stolen from his owner so never got the see the final result.
