Food memories

We haven't had a food discussion for awhile.

Is there a food you miss? Perhaps you have developed allergies or you know the food is not part of today's healthy diet.

One that comes to mind in braunschweiger sandwiches.

Is there a food you ate as a child but won't eat now?

In the sandwich mode again, Deviled Ham sandwiches...they just don't taste as good as when I was a kid

Is there a food you eat now but didn't eat as a child?

Brussels sprouts, mushrooms

Is there something you'd have a terrible time resisting...

food i miss...lemonaide...ever since chemo, i gag when i try to drink it...

food i ate as a child that i dont now...fried spam sandwiches..'nuf said

food i didnt eat as a child that i do now...acorn squash

food i wish brian would like so i could make it on a regular basis...salmon, frog legs, all meat roasts, wild rice, cold macaroni salad and chocolate/chocolate cake
certain food trigger memories for me.....crumpets dripping with butter. Mum used to toast them on a toasting fork in front of a real fire, when it was cold outside and the fire made your cheeks all rosy and you felt safe and warm.
Mince pies, not shop ones, but the home cooked ones you had at Christmas that were in an old familiar cake tin and when you opened it the pies were nestled in the tin dusted with icing sugar and cooked to perfection....
No roasts? Does he eat Prime Rib? That's a roast. Apparently he's met a few overly dry roasts in his day. Corned beef? Pastrami?

Cold mac salads? Is it the mayo dressing? Probably just the feel of cold pasta in the mouth.

Dark chocolate cake......how sad

Only thing my dh won't eat is organ meats....or drink coffee.
Every year I say I'm going to make crumpets.....save some tuna can tins and make some up. Of course real butter!! And some orange marm.
You are talkin' my language! :yay:

Food I miss-- My Grandma's Potato Salad. No one could make it like her.

Food I don't eat now, but did as a kid--Cherry Pop Tarts

Food I eat now, but didn't as a child--Spinach-- any way I can get it! Spinach Salad= YUM!

Food I can't prepare very well -- Baked Fish

Food I wish I was better at preparing-- Baked Fish

Food that I love, that is gross, but OH SO GOOD- Fried Bologna

Food I'm eating right now-- Celery w/ Cream Cheese
Supposedly I was a picky eater when I was a littler kid. My favorite dinner was Mom's oven fried chicken. First she browned it on the stove then put it in the oven to finish. Mashed potatoes and lima beans. YUM. I also loved her meatballs, and meatloaf. Her holiday turkey dinners were legendary. At her funeral last year, everybody talked about what a good cook Mom was. Funny, because her mother wasn't a good cook. Fortunately I inherited the good cook gene.

Other food I loved as a kid: fish sticks, pot pies, corn. Spaghetti-Os! All junk food but we didn't have much of that ever. Never had soda pop unless the parents had a party. Lunch was always a sandwich (pb&j, bologna, or buddig lunch meat) and fruit (I HATED canned pears). But I ate cuz if I didn't eat, I went hungry. After school snack was a piece of white bread, mayo, and a slice of cheese.

I eat a lot more foods now than when I was a kid. I love brussel sprouts!
Is there a food you miss?

Cocoa pebbles/krispies. I'm allergic to them for some reason.
Also, my mom's stuffing.

Is there a food you ate as a child but won't eat now?

I don't eat peanut butter & jelly as much anymore. I used to eat it all the time, and I can't even remember the last time I had one now. I don't eat steak anymore either. I don't like it.

Is there a food you eat now but didn't eat as a child?

Mashed potatoes, broccoli.

Is there something you'd have a terrible time resisting...

Chicken wings! I love chicken wings. Especially from Popeyes. Also Chinese food, that's my favorite. We go to our Chinese place to get dinner every Sunday, that's how much I like it.

My favorite thing to drink is Mello Yello. So delicious!

My least favorite food in the whole world is green beans. I hate green beans with a passion. They're awful. The only green beans I have ever liked are the fried ones at TGI Friday's.
As I sit here eating my cold leftover pizza...... ;)

My mom couldn't make a roast or steak to save her soul...tough, dry, chew and chew...:(
Other than that, she's an excellent cook and everything was good. Not adventurous, but good midwestern food!

My dad's specialty was S.O.S. - his kid friendly version was Save Our Ship, but it really was from the Army and they called it Shi# on a Shingle... :D (White sauced globby stuff served over toast.)
I remember one time mom was sick with the flu, so dad made it for us kids for supper. Mom peeked in the pan to see what he made, then RAN to the bathroom and got sick... it does look pretty unappetizing!

Something I don't eat: - actually it's a drink - gatorade or any similar drinks, and any red kool-aid. Both were from when I was pregnant with the girls. I had such horrible morning sickness and I was dehydrated. I had to drink and drink, and I just kept vomiting it all up, 24/7. They finally put me on meds, as I was unable to keep anything down for months and looked like those poor starving children from Africa with a big belly :(

I eat pizza when Todd's not home for supper, as he really doesn't like it (amazing!).
Also I eat out at Chipotle when not with him too - as he doesn't like their food and I just love it!

One thing we eat now that we never did before is Indian food.
Susan, they actually sell braunschweiger sandwiches in what we call The Wheel of Death. It's the company lunchroom's vending machines. Braunschweiger with a slab of onion, Swiss cheese on dark rye bread. It's AWESOME!!!

I'll take Lori's list and fill in my own -
Food I miss-- My mom's cheese cake. She made real NY Style that was 3-4" tall and really rich and heavy.

Food I don't eat now, but did as a kid-- PB&J is about the only thing I don't eat now and prolly just out of so many other choices. Back then, it was the only thing I could make myself and NOT get yelled at for.

Food I eat now, but didn't as a child-- Veggies in general. As a kid, i hated all veggies. Now I can happily eat about anything except squash. Just can't do it.

Food I can't prepare very well -- Anything that involves multi-tasking. I need to be able to focus.

Food I wish I was better at preparing-- My Mom's sugar cookies. My sister can nail that recipe but no one else can. It's like Mom told her about a secret ingredient and didn't tell anyone else!

Food that I love, that is gross, but OH SO GOOD- Jen will say seafood... She hates it and thinks it's gross. I love it.

Food I'm eating right now-- Rold Gold pretzels!

And I'm gonna add one to Lori's list;
Food that you could eat yourself sick with and not feel bad about it-- Crab legs or peel and eat shrimp. Done it many times and can't wait until I can again. I'd literally do anything for a plate of King crab legs!

Vance
I'm still into PBJ. DH loves it, but also fasting restrictions several times a year pretty much leaves beans and shellfish as protein. Alas, I'm developing a shrimp allergy....last time I ate it my mouth itched big time! Other shellfish is a rare treat due to $$.

I'm very particular about my PB, natural, no additives, crunchy  Even then once a week is plenty.

My oldest brother and I are the Braunschweiger fans. Funny we didn't know it until a few years ago......we both avoid it....with regret. ...and neither of us will eat liver, go figure.

NY cheesecake. I don't dare make one least I sit down and eat the whole thing! Key Lime Pie is another thing to avoid for same reason.
Vance, I think my husband could give you a run for your money with the peel and eat shrimp. We went for a buffet for mother's day and he filled his plate several times.

You sure he was a fireman?? He's not like the ones I know! BIL was San Francisco fireman, he'd eat anything.....as long as he didn't have to cook it! House across from church is being decommissioned, don't know who feels the worst.......the guys because the Greek food isn't coming across the street regularly, or us for the strong young men in the neighborhood.
............

One thing I miss from youth is fresh trout. Father traveled for business and friends along the way were fishermen. We'd have regular trout dinners when Dad was coming back from where trout fishing was ideal.
at the firestation, he would either eat it then call me and whine or he would go to mcdonalds...he is SUPER picky...and it doesnt help that i allowed it to go on all of these years....

i miss fried walleye....yum....
One thing I don't miss is my mom's cooking. She was a terrible cook...except for spaghetti and to this day I make it the same way she did...and everyone loves it...except my dh.

Hate liver and onions, cooked spinach, broccoli, unless its cut into tiny little pieces and mixed heavily with something good.

As a child I used to eat baloney with ketchup or miricle whip...yuck.

Love and have always loved hamburgers. I would eat that five days a week, on the sixth day it would be spaghetti and the seventh would be pizza(can't believe Todd doesn't like it)

If I ate what I wanted...I would die a fat but happy old lady.
