We created a Monster

Well, Kim did, I'm blaming her.

Saturday night, Kim went to bed first, she called me in, and I came in and saw Virginia with her front paws up on the bed looking sad. Mady and Gracie get up on the bed themselves, and they often come up before bed or in the morning for a snuggle, while Virginia just looks from the side of the bed all forlorn. So Kim told me to lift her up. I did. Virginia was really happy, she got settled down, and fell asleep.
Neither Mady or Gracie ever stay in the bed, at night, they might be up for 10-15 minutes, then they want down, and they go and sleep in their room. Virginia however, she stayed. I didn't have the heart to take her down from the bed when I went to bed. She slept the whole night.

Last night, Kim went to bed, Virginia's paws went up on the bed, and she started crying. I lifted her rear legs up, and yes, she slept the whole night.

(there was a whole 18 inches or so for me to sleep on...)

I think we've started something...

Ain't that the truth!

Every year we say we're getting a king size bed. ...still getting our zzz's in a queen though.
weclome to my world but dreamer does it 3am so i get out of bed and lift him up .. and that my friend has been going on now for 2 years !!!
When it get too hot she "might" want off. In the mean time, the old lady enjoys her comforts!

I don't think so. Virginia is completely addicted to her soft comforts. Whether her silk pillows on the couch or on our bed. The other girls prefer cool tile. Virginia always wants softness. :hearts:
Ah, two of your four best girls in bed with you. And what makes it better is for 10 -15 minutes each night you have all 4 of your best girls there. Now if only you can figure out how to keep Gracie and Mady on the bed all night, it will be an whole night of snuggles and cuddles. :P  :P  :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:

I keep offering to set up a 2nd bedroom for Kim, that might entice the girls to stay in my bed longer
I moved to a new bedroom because MO kept pushing me out..........and DHs snoring! Now it's Jack on the floor and Harry to snuggle......and neither of the boys snores! (and they don't complain about my snoring!)

  :aww:
I've never seen a monster that sweet and that much relaxed. :aww:
She belongs there - or the bed belongs to her now I'm afraid. :hearts:

My little/big Joy startes to talk about bed before she jumpes up.
 It's kind of a small talk with a thin flute voice......oh how to explain that.
I talks back in a similar way.....yeah, funny conversation, not much sain,
then at last I say: OK, jump.....and there she is heavy like a stone falling
down from heaven, a very heavy, happy stone.

After reading about Verginia I am glad she doesn't start this
conversation in the evening. She also love the soft comforts..........
Maybe you should get her some steps so she could get up on her own. Might save your back.

We had looked into this, haven't found any suitable ones yet (most pet-steps seem to be geared towards little dogs, which makes sense I guess). Our bedroom isn't very big either, so there's not a lot of room around the bed.
Bailey and Eevee will only sleep in the bed when Jacob isn't in it, because they know Jacob doesn't like it. He usually gets up before me, so they both jump into the bed as soon as he leaves! (:
I wish they could sleep in the bed all night, if it was up to me they would be so spoiled.

Melissa and I each use an ottoman by our beds. Mine is an old, circa 1987, big square ottoman next to the bed on the non-used side so it isn't in the way. Melissa's is at the foot of her bed...it was the foot stool for our den loveseat that we moved upstairs.
:hearts: :hearts: :hearts:   Awww Virginia is so beautiful and sweet!! Just remember, if itwasn't for Virginia you would not have Mady or Grace. So I think she should be treated as a queen, Just like Kim!!! :cheer: :cheer: You could always get a bigger bed or get a short ramp. I ordered a ramp from amazon, a Mr. something ramp junior. It is slick for the minivan and might work for the bed. :) :) :) check it out.

That's what I told Kim yesterday morning when she complained about the lack of space in the bed. I told her it was Mother's Day and Virginia is the best momma in the world, she gave us Mady and Gracy so she deserved all the comfort in the world!
You lot are so soft :)
For the record, before we got Mady I said, very clearly, that it was an unbreakable rule that we NOT allow dogs in the bed. Now I am under threat of being banished to my own room so that they can have MY bed! And I love how David spins these tales so that somehow he is the innocent party in all this. I know that he doesn't fool any of you, though, you see him for the marshmallow that he is!
:aww: :aww: :aww:
Dogs on the bed.
Who can refuse them?

(PS: Everytime I see the title of this thread, it reminds me of Eminem's song "Without Me". :) )
I would predict Virginia is there to stay...just by how much she LOVES her silk pillows!! ;)

We're on night three. For night three, she stuck her front paws up on the bed, no whining or crying like night two, because now she fully expects to be put up there.

The whole affair makes me sorta pissed off with dogs and dog training! Time and time again, the dogs have proved their smarts that they can learn a behaviour or habit from just ONE TIME. So they should be fully capable of learning ALL of it just as quickly! Agility, Herding, obedience, the lot! So whenever they're "not getting it", that's bullcrap! It's just that they don't want to get it!
Who is the one getting trained?
Virginia says...yes, you learn fast.

Well yes and no!
Reinforcement theory says that the higher value the reward the faster the behaviour is learnt. So Dawn is spot on when she says she predicted Virginia would learn fast because she LOVES her silk pillows. (Gotta love a dog trainer :clappurple: )

IF we can communicate quickly to a dog that if they do X behaviour they will get something they really, really want then they will learn fast.

We're just don't speak dog very well. But I bet that if you can inform Virginia that she gets to sleep on the bed so long as she takes the garbage out then the garbage will be out!

In addition a self selected reward is likely to be of higher value than a human imposed one. Sorry to burst your bubble but I suspect Virginia much prefers sleeping on your bed to any of the treats you hand out in an attempt to convince her to take out the garbage.

Then there is the difficulty of the behaviour factor. It's a darn site easier for Virginia to loll about on said bed than it is for her to take out the garbage. :D

I forsee you toting a comfy mattress around with you so that you can adequately reward her ladyship for behaviours that you wish to reinforce

You broke the forums! You must send me one lamb as penance!
My husband created a wooden platform half the height of the bed to place beside it. As you have noticed, most stairs are made for little "froo-froo" dogs and not wide enough for an OES. He custom made our platform 24" x 20" and covered with carpet that matches the bedroom carpet. You hardly even see it's there but the dogs all use it. The two girls, who are 11+, could get up on the bed without it but it makes it so much easier for them getting on and off. They really appreciate it.

Hmm, does he have the specs for this? Because it looks like Virginia is in our bed to stay and David is going to throw his back out hoisting her up there. I have lost yet another battle with David and the girls. I guess I should be thankful they let me sleep there. On my bed. That I paid for.

Yeah totally weird that's not the quote I selected. :lmt:

WELL 2 NITES AGO LIFTING DREAMER I THROW MY BACK OUT..THANK U DREAMER
David, perhaps you should just detour on your route home and pick up your own lamb??? ;) ;)
Suzi you're so tiny and Dreamer is so big, it is no wonder that silly boy helped you pull your back out. As I help Violet and sometimes China into the van, by lifting their rearends in, I do think about pulling my back out. Thank God not so far. Usually they get in and out themselves, but their old age cranks up periodically and they need a little help.

At night Asia always jumps in the bed with me and eventually China will come along and jump in too. Violet, however, rarely sleeps in the bed with me at night. Chuck works nights, so as soon as daddy goes to bed in the morning, there is Violet in the bed. She usually goes in there just after breakfast and waits for daddy to come home. She'll sleep most of the day away in bed with her daddy. :) It really is sweet.
Carl made a set of steps for himself to reach into the engine compartment of the suburban. They got confiscated by Tripper, the basset, so he could get into the truck, they were wider and very basic but they worked.
The ramp I bought from Amazon is, Mr. Herzhlers Smart Ramp Junior. I use it on the sliding door of my minivan. It was a good investment if for no other reason than to save my back and shoulder. Also easier for the dogs. It's light weight too. :) :) :)
