Pet Food Hell!!!!

I fell like I am in pet food hell right now. Three out of the four foods in my dog food rotation have been recalled, as well as two of my cat foods.

This I can deal with, however my major problem is Royal Canin has stopped manufacturing their Hypoallergenic Selected Protein (rabbit and potato) Veterinary Diet. I have spoken with both my local Royal Canin rep and and their national customer service department and both told me the same thing, "rabbit has become too expensive and they have been unable to source another supplier that meets both their price and quality standard." They have not discontinued the line, but have indefinitely stop manufacturing the product.

Oscar had been having major ear infections for the last 3 years and working with a veterinary dermatologist we finally came up with a diet that stopped these infections. Both the vet and I are afraid of a diet change, as it took a long time of trying various diets before we found one that did not flare up his ears.

Anyone have any suggestions or a source that still has Royal Canin???

What are your protein sources that are on the "allowed" list?
Kathie-
My Bichon mix, Jack, used to eat Royal Canin Rabbit and Potato due to his bad skin allergy problems. I was dealing with shortages at my vets office, and had to try something else. I switched him to Nature's Valley Instinct Rabbit Meal Formula and have never gone back to Royal Canin. He loves it and has had no allergy problems on it at all. There is another company that makes a rabbit based food, but he was chewing himself up within two days on it. I would highly recommend the Instinct Rabbit Meal food :P
Hi Dawn,
The only "allowed" protein source is rabbit. We tried ostrich, goose, bison and venison and they all caused ear flares. We are discussing a soy based protein food right now and both my vet and I are girding ourselves for another period of flare-ups. I have about two weeks of food left and then it is into the nether world!

Hi Jenn,
Is Nature's Valley Instinct Rabbit Meal a prescription diet, or can I get it from a pet store or supplier?

Kathie
I completely feel your pain. This is what life is like with Oscar and venison. I have nightmares about the manufacturer discontinuing his food. :(

I was just in Petco yesterday and saw a canned food containing rabbit, called Natural Balance Rabbit and Brown Rice. Not sure if they make it in kibble form.

Have you tried any dog food with fish based proteins? It didn't work for Oscar, but thought it might be worth a try.

Hope you find a great substitute.

Laurie and Oscar
I get the Instinct Rabbit Meal at my local pet store, and it is not a prescription food. It costs about the same as the Royal Canin. Maybe a few bucks less.

The Natural Balance Rabbit food caused my Jack to start chewing his legs within two days of feeding it. :( But you could give it a try......it is available at pet stores too.

I was very worried about switching Jacks food and when the Natural Balance did not work for us I was at my wits end. I looked at the ingredients on the Instinct and thought there was no way that would work either, but it has been just as good for us as the Royal Canin. Jack has been on the Instinct for a little over one year with no issues. :cheer:

Good luck! :crossed:
Wysong has a canned rabbit food... might be able to tide you over 'til you can find something more suitable... you'll need to balance it out with a carb and something else.

Grandma Lucy's has a Rabbit food too... I asked about the possibility of cross contamination. It may not be as sensitive a problem as we appear to have here so it might work for you.

We make our food in a kitchen, which is just like a large restaurant
kitchen. We do all we can to ensure the highest standards of production,
however there is the possibility of the proteins coming in contact at some
point in the process.

Good luck to you.
Don't panic. You have a few weks left of your old food which means you can slowly transfer to a new food. I understand your issue with Oscar...Have you evern tried Orijen? We use the six fresh fish. Food has never been recalled ( and yes, its a bit expensive)...

My dog Bowie, was just a pup in thae last big food recall. He was SO sick. He ended up having major issues from eating the rcalled food. They don't recall food until months after they know of the problems. Anyway, long story short...after months and months of loose poop, ear infections, one of which being MRSA, and him not eating, etc, I finally tried this Orijen and we introduced is slowly...He is doing GREAT on it...For over three years! No ear infections, no trouble pooping....You are in NYC? I am on IN also but out here on LI...There are a few places that sell Orijen in the City. I highly recommend trying it...
If worse came to worse, could you find actual rabbit meat?
Cook it yourself & add it to some dry food?
Evangers has a canned rabbit too.....and like mentioned, maybe make your own with something like this as a base??

Good luck, Kathie!
