Behaviour change in reguard to grooming ?

Ziggy is now 17 months old and was neutered seven weeks ago. He is a normal excitable male OES and has never shown any aggression towards people or other dogs. Recently whilst being groomed he has started to growl in a fairly nasty way, then immediately jump up and run away. Its my partner who grooms him and has done so since Ziggy was 9 weeks old. She does this every day although sometimes its just a quick brush but always a play and a cuddle before and afterwards, this has always worked well in the past.

The pecking order has always been established as myself, then my partner and then Ziggy in our household. He has been trained and is good at his commands although at times he can be a little stubborn and even attempt to dominate. The action my partner takes when he does the above is to call him back to her, make him sit and then praise him - although this does take several attempts in this situation. She does persevere and once he complies she then carries on grooming unless the situation repeats itself, in which case after calling him back etc. she gives him a time out in another room. He shows none of this behavior when I groom him or when I play roughly with him. I have also checked him out physically and there seems to be no problem. Outside this situation his behavior and demeanor seems normal.

Your advice would be very much appreciated. Also is my partner doing the right thing when this occurs. Thanks.

Lily when she hit about 9 months old, she went through this phase where she would grumble at me when I groomed her. I would just keep grooming her and if she would walk off, I would do the same call her back and continue with grooming. She eventually got over it, realizing that there is no way she is getting out of being groomed.

Thats all the advice I really have. Hope it helps a little.
Welcome to the brat months. This is the point they are testing everything. They want to see if the pack does have leaders or perhaps he could fill a void. Stick with it, you are on the right track. No, their brains don't fall out during this time, they just turn them off.

He should also be into the change in coat stage, make sure there aren't mats that are causing discomfort.
You just need to be firm with him also is there a issue on the grooming you both do. Also you are not too far from where I live. I live in Bedford & if you have issues with his grooming I can help :)
Thanks Lori and P when we both groom him he is fine and yesterday we both worked on him for an couple of hours with a break and all went well he wiggles and squirms a bit but calms down when I tell him too. Lots of wet weather here at present so more matts than usual. It only seems to happen when my partner does the grooming with me not around. I suspect as suggested above its adolescent behavior and he is attempting to be dominant with her. Hopefully by making him do what she wants him to and not the other way round she is doing the right thing. I have sent you an E mail to make contact as we live quite close to you and its nice to make your acquaintance.
It can last a fair bit longer than mere adolesence...

Archie can take 2-3 hours of grooming before he totally submits, I think in his case it's sensitiveness to any hair pulling, like you say it's wet wet wet (during our official drought!) and you can't groom them wet whereas his best behaviour is when he is thoroughly tired after a good long walk and lots of play, but at the moment I can't groom him after his walk as he is wet, so he gets brushed when he has lot's of energy.

Stick with it he will surrender it's just a case of how long will it take....
hi
may I ask what type of brush/comb you are useing to groom Ziggy out with ,

we have had awful weather rain rain and more rain, our Lincolns coat just fizzled up from 1 week show to the next i had a lot of grooming to do
Mark I though you gave him a good old shave
Thanks Val
We are using an undercoat rake to get rid of any mats that occur ( we dont show him so getting rid of some of the undercoat is not a problem), then a metal comb for long thick coats working through the coat in lines. We also brush him before and after using a Mikki combi brush again for long thick coats. Hope this helps.

Ive seen the Mikki combi brush it may pull and tag on the coat
Matts need to be gently pull apart as raking matts may also hurt , putting small amount of condition on a matt helps to tease apart, before brushing /combing

I now use "The Coat Handler" shampoo/condition/Anti detangler spray all can be brought from " Petcra" on line,
with the detangler spray I spray the brush, brushes there are so many to choose from and can cost any think form £10to £50,
we manly use a bristle and boar brush, Isinis brush are good ,all can be brought online/Ebay

I see you live in Cambridge, the East Anglian OES club are holding a open Show on 17th June @The Milton community Centre Milton Cambridge,
if its near you why not pop along and we can show you our brushes ,combs/potions and lotions we use :D

P lori and Georgi are you going :D

Thanks for the information Val we do use a detangler spray (and gently tease out the mats first) but I will get the one you mention and spraying the brush is a good idea and something we have not yet done. Also we have other softer brushes and we will also give them go.

In regard to the Milton meet we went last year as Ziggys brother was being shown for the first time in the puppy class. he was shown by Lyn for Pauline as she was away. It was a good day and Cooper won his first medal. This year unfortunately we have at present a prior engagement. But things could change. If we are able to make it we will see you there.

we was unable to go last year for the open show as Tia was having puppies,
Our Lincoln who's dad is "Monty" has a pufuse coat and I need to be on top of his coat ,hense the brushes and combs lotion potions :lmt:
so many to chose, each one of us has our own way, I have learnt so much over the years and i keep learning often someone comes up with a way I've not heard or tried before :lmt:

When I spray the brush with a detangler spray i hold the brush near the dogs coat for the excise to go on the coat so non is wasted
hope the grooming goes better for :cheer:

Fingers crossed that I am not working :)

Hi there

Do you mean Pauline Mills and her boy puppy she is currently showing - K Moments Like Zat (I think thats his kennel name). Such a shame you have prior commitments, however, I hope you have fun. If you ever need help with the various brushes, lotions, potions and heaven knows what else - we are more than happy to meet up. I love Cambridge - such a beautiful county and fingers crossed the weather improves.

Parwaz - hopefully see you at the EAOES Open Show - work is damn annoying at time isnt it! I've had an awfully busy week and putting five days work into four days has been a challenge :D Did you know that the GLOES Open Show is now being held in August - the same day as the Champ Show rather than in June. Saves on petrol and time for us all
