Photo Challenge #2 – Sheepies and famous people

Everyone is proud of where they’re from for some reason or another. Let’s focus on people and places associated with them for a photo challenge.

Here’s your challenge; Find a famous person who is from your immediate area/town/city, find something that directly relates to that person or persons. Then, take your Sheepie to that location, take a photo of either you and them or just them in front of the famous place and then post it and anything about said location so that we all feel we know more about where you’re from.

Please keep this challenge focused on people and places that they’re associated with. We can do another for famous places like ballparks and bridges and such.

For help finding someone famous, search Wikipedia for a list of famous people from insert your town/city and state/country. Here is the search results I got when I searched for Dayton, OH - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_pe ... yton,_Ohio

We have many many choices due to lots from folks are from here or came here at some point in their lives and then called it home. To me and most others, the best choice are the Wright brothers. Orville and Wilbur made the world smaller. Now that we’re taking a break from showing for a few weeks, we’ll get the girls over to Wright Brothers Memorial on Huffman Prairie for a photo. This is where the Wright boys made history. I’ll post some lesser known facts with the photos as we all should.

So see who you can come up with and get some cool photos and great history to share. Let’s make our group a little more well-rounded.

My husband is sort of famous; that counts, right?!?

"please sign my book 'to the best dog in the whole world; Tonks, not Luna.' Okay?".
While he would count, I was kinda leaning towards someone so famous that otheres across the nation and maybe even the world would know.

:D

Someone's gotta touch up his wikipedia page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Hughes

NO mention of sheepdogs at all!!!!
Hey! Most of us here recognize Adam Hughes but wouldn't recognize the mayor of Dayton, OH.

Vance isn't playing fair!!! :potstir:
My fiance was on the reality show ax men. Heres lily as a pup, my ax men (travis) and me being outshined by the two camera hogs.
Travis is reconized nationally by fans of the show. Is this closer to what you were thinking?

Hey! Just because YOU wouldn't recognize a comic book artist, doesn't mean other people wouldn't! We were lost in a train station in Barcelona a few years ago, and three young men walked up, introduced themselves as "big fans" and asked if we needed help! And last year at San Diego Comic Con, one of the BBC guys that were supposed to be watching after Matt Smith and Karen Gillan asked Adam is he was that famous artist, Adam Hughes (Adam bemoans that sadly it wasn't in front of the Dr Who stars)! I think "famous" is a term open to interpretation; I wouldn't know any famous raps stars if I was standing next to them, or country singers, or politicians. But they're all "famous". I'm going to stand my ground and say my honey is famous!!!
Does Winston and Lassie (sorta) count?

I gotta go take a picture of Ava with Billy the Kid's creepy animatronic head.

YES!!!! :yay:
I know just the place for the first one here! :?: :?: Just need to go get it done!
Dont think there is ANYTHING famous in small town Denton. haha
No where did I say I didn't know who Adam is. I'm a HUGE Kevin Smith fan and have been to Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash in Red Bank, NJ. Even got a Bluntman hat signed by Jay during the last visit. I think it's safe to say I know a little bit... Not to mention my penchant for pin-up/bomber nose art...

Kristin, one quick search uncovered this link -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denton,_Texas#Notable_natives_and_residents

I had originally hoped folks would see this as a search for historical people of some sort. Within the 'class', I'd figure that folks like Roy Orbison, who is from DENTON, TX fits the bill. Yeah he was an entertainer, but there is some historical value there, in my mind...

So let's try to go that direction. I'm not trying to be a jerk, just trying to stay focused and learn about where other Sheepie people live in a fun way.

Oh great...now I feel challenged... 8)

Prudence ... the real Prudence that was the subject of "Dear Prudence" lives down here. I have not met her yet - but now I have to go be a stalker

Do you think she will find it odd to show up to her yoga business with my dog? and then a camera? :lmt:
I'm going to sneak one in here...and it's non-OES to boot!

My photo is of my ATB basset hound Simon while meeting with the University of Minnesota mascot - the Golden Gopher!
If you follow Big Ten sports, you know this guy

Based on photos I already have, this is the best I can do.

This is Chewie with MN Senator (state senate) Kathy Sheran. We were in a parade with our therapy dog chapter, and she saw Chewie and wanted her photo taken with him!

University of Minnesota...School of Liberal Arts...I think.
Here is my real entry into this category.
It is not one specific person, however. And it's not a good thing to be famous for either. :( :(

Here is some info:
The Dakota Conflict of 1862, once called the Great Sioux Uprising, was the most tragic and deadly event in Minnesota history. Instigated by a series of exploitative and broken treaties, the six-week war between the U.S. and the Eastern Dakota Nation resulted in hundreds dead, farms and homes abandoned, and the forced exile of the Dakota people from the state. A kangaroo military court condemned over 300 Dakota men in 15-minute trials. President Abraham Lincoln reviewed the cases and pardoned all but 38, who were hanged on the day after Christmas, 1862, in Mankato, Minnesota. To heighten the effect of their execution, all 38 were hanged simultaneously in a single drop--the largest mass execution in U.S. history. The Dakota Conflict cleared the way for white settlement and its influence can still be felt in the Dakota community.

My images are from memorials to the native american indians who were killed in the mass murder in Mankato MN. There is a memorial at the site. They were erected in 1987, the 125th anniversary, called the "Year of Reconciliation", decreed by the Governor of MN. These were done to help heal the wounds still felt from the events leading up to and into 1862.

The 1st is the "Winter Warrior" sculpture - and sits on the site of the executions. It now is the grounds of the public library (seen in the background)

And right across the street is "Reconciliation Park", with it's buffalo sculpture. These are both made of native Kasota limestone. It is a limestone located only in the Mankato area (Kasota Prairie) and used in construction and decorative work in our area. It also is exported all over the country and world. (see the library in the background above)

This is a real good historical reminder, and many people have photos taken with these 2 memorials.

Chewie was a bit rumpled looking - we had just come from a therapy dog visit at one of the colleges in town...he was well hugged and messed with. I would have fixed him up, but a big storm was coming and I wanted to get the photos taken.
EXCELLENT POST DAWN!!! This is exactly what I had in mind when I proposed this challenge.

Gosh, there is a ton of stuff out there! Just Google Robert Indiana.

Here's DH with Nelson by Robert Indiana's "Numbers 0-9" sculpture, directly across the lawn from his LOVE work:
