Synonym for "cancel"

How about a synonym for cancel, canceled and/or cancelled?

I am looking for a good way of saying "the event has been canceled" or "we need to cancel the show."

Terminated, shut down, stopped, aborted and ended imply it has already begun.

The best way I can think of to convey the same sentiment is to say "will not be held".

Thinking about it, the problem seems to be that canceled is a special tense that conveys a past activity about a future event. I think the same would apply to the word "scheduled" too, but at least there's "arranged" and maybe even "organized".

Or is my brain just not working right on this?

If you're moving the date, go with postponed, otherwise stick with cancelled. Cancelled is a more common word that is always used for the same thing and this translates to less confusion. Just my take Ron.

I agree with Vance. If dates have changed then 'postponed'. If cancelled just say 'cancelled'. You can always add something saying 'we are hoping to re-schedule the event and will keep you posted'.

Cheers

postponed or rescheduled works if you are picking a new date. Otherwise I agree with everyone here; I think Cancelled is the way to go.
I'm just looking for that synonym, if it exists.
2. (verb) cancel, call off, scratch, scrub

Cancel is the most common word of those listed above.
"Called off...." Hmmmm! Almost one word, not too bad.
I'm from Jersey, so I might go with 'knocked off' or just 'whacked'...

Whacked... LOL. "Joe, we just whacked dat Cats how-you-say musical." hmmmmmm maybe!

86'd. Interesting! Maybe a little bit jargony and makes me feel more like "discontinued" or "run out" rather than cancelled, but I like that, too!

"PBS just 86'd the "In Julia (Child)'s Kitchen" !! Works for me in that context! :-D hmmmm still sorta two words though, no? lol
All the arts organizations around town use "cancelled" if one of our events falls through. If you want to be a bit friendlier, perhaps "We are sorry to announce that XXX will not be presented/take place as scheduled."

Hope this helps!
what about icksnay :sidestep:
S**tcanned!

Just make sure you spell cancelled correctly!
Are you working on a crossword puzzle?
LOL not a crossword puzzle, just curiosity. :D
THANKS EVERYONE for the great (and funny!) suggestions, still open to "the perfect synonym."
