Dex is trying to be a good big brother. He gets vanilla chews (not rawhide but look like it). Winston got one of his older, well chewed chews but Winston had interest in the newer one so Dex gave it up though he watched closely.

That is a sweet compromise. Winston looks pretty content. What is a vanilla chew?
The chew is bigger than he is!! :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:
Vanilla chew looks like a rawhide roll but is a plant protein rather than rawhide and has vanilla flavor and aroma. Dex loves them, they don't get quite as slimy as rawhide and smell much better.

They work well for us also because the vet wants us to keep Dex away from beef.
Cute photo - I love Dexter's big hairy legs in the background!

Where do you get these chews? How long do they last?
I get them at the pet shop we do our training through. I'll get some info on them if you want or failing that send you a couple. They last Dex a long time, he chews on them rolled for a while eventually unrolling them then chews on the sheets a while. The rescue we had would eat one in half a day. Dex has 5 going right now in various stages.

If you can find some info on them that would be great. :D
They sound interesting!
I'll try to get a couple tomorrow and PM you.

Don't just pm Dawn, I would be interested in these too! I was told that real rawhide is not good, but that 'pressed' rawhide is fine and I am wondering if this falls into the category of 'pressed'. I am assuming that pressed means that they schmooshed some stuff up, put it into a form and then dried it out, making it break apart in not so big chunks. Wow, that sentence was not written well, but hopefully you understand me. Need to have coffee before I type!
I'm curious about the vanilla chews too! Not that Tonks and Luna no longer fight ( ) I'd love to get them a chew like this!

And DEX is adorable! reminds me so much of Tonks when she was that age!
I too, would like the info on the vanilla chews.
Turns out the chews are not plant protein but made from beef cheeks rather than rawhide so the chew up cleaner, don't slime as bad and are more digestible. They impregnant them with vanillas then bake them.

The store where I get them buy them from Pet Deli Store - http://store.petdelistore.com/retrieverroll.html

You can also get them from the store I do though they said their supply is somewhat limited. Call Dan at Pets West, Aledo, TX 817 441 6881. Tell him you are with the OES Forum. His website is - http://www.petswest.net/. Their website catalog isn't working yet.
I am a little perturbed at the shop. When the vet recommended we take beef out of Dex's diet an employee at the shop recommended those chews saying they were a plant protein made a sepcial way. Now I got some people on the forum interested and it turns out I extended false information.

Sorry about misleading everyone. It was not intentional.

At least I found out Dexter really doesn't have a beef allergy!
No worries. It wasn't the non-beef part that interested me so much as thinking that it was a pressed rawhide product and thus safe for the dogs to eat. When Mady and Virginia go to their friends house to play, they go straight for the rawhide chews and just love them, and I feel like the meanest mama around when I take them away.
Don't be so sure to discount the beef allergy-- my girls are grain intolerant, but can handle a little bit in the form of the occasional treat without suffering from bad bowel distress or an attack of the itchies. But recently when the vet had Luna switch to a prescription diet that was loaded with grain, she had a really bad reaction. I think sometimes these allergies are as much about the amount of the allergen as they are about the allergen itself.
Thanks for the info. They sound interesting. I don't have dogs with any allergies, so that part doesn't matter to me.
