Rattle, rattle

I was using a real lightweight crate in the SUV for Simon because he gets freaked out riding for anything over five minutes and its 45 minutes to class. Well, thats out now. He gets freaked out in that too and he turns it on its side or upside down by moving around in it. We have a sturdier travel crate but I don't want him to ruin it by trying to dig a hole in it to get out when we travel. I use it at trials and run-thru's and it fits both dogs.

I hauled the metal one we had used since he was a pup up from the basement and set it up in the SUV. I hope this works...one problem...its loud. Every little bump and it rattles...and that might scare him even more. I have a blanket in the car and will put it over the crate and hopefully it will quiet the rattle.

If this doesn't work, I'm not sure what I will do.

I've had the same problem. We finally switched to a plastic crate. I think it's the kind that you would put on a plane. Not sure what it's called. No rattle there.
Every bump in the road I hit with the SUV it would rattle. And I live on a gravel road.
Good luck.

2 things. Have you tried anchoring it down in the vehicle? Also, slipping the metal crate pan into a cover will help with noise.
I thought this post would be about a rattlesnake hiding somewhere and one of the dogs found it. I'm glad it's just your grooming kit!
We ran into this during the last trip to a show with Caitlyn. I've decided that the crate needs to be strapped down, a large sheet of cardboard, (I'm smart and saved all the box packaging that my two garage doors came in a couple years ago!) slipped under the tray and if need be, I'll zip tie some of the sides to the front/back/top to quiet things down. We'll find out how this works on the weekend of the 201-22...

Your pup is super motion sensitive......and maybe even a bit of motion sick. Try 2 ginger snap cookies before the trip (motion sickness), tieing down the crate so it can't be turned over, and cover it leaving the back open to see what has passed and some forward opening if possible to see you......maybe. A good toy for distraction may help. The "airline" crates, vari-kennels only have one opening thus reducing side distractions.

Also retrain, short trips, gradually increasing in lengths.
Have you thought about harnessing him in the seat, rather than putting him in a crate?

Oscar used to get very anxious in the car, and paced, and even peed on the seat when he was a puppy. I think he might get a bit motion sick. I now have a wide-front travel harness that we use when Oscar goes in the car. It hooks through a locked-in seat belt, so it allows for a minimal amount of movement, but it seems to give Oscar a sense of security. He gets in and immediately lays down. He'll pop his head up occasionally, when we are at a stoplight, much to the amusement of drivers around us. :D (I see alot of smiles, and finger pointing when he does this.) Otherwise, he just goes to sleep.

The harness keeps him safe, but also seems to give him a sense of security. I used to use it only for long trips, but now I use it for short ones as well, as I've noticed that he paces and pants excessively if I don't.

I vote harness too, I use one with Ru and it's brilliant  He also used to tip his crate and I got sick of trying to tie the crate down, he outgrew it and I started using the harness :) I've figured a way to fold the seats down as I have a small car and can still use the seatbelts with the harness, it's ideal.
I'm not sure what his symptoms are of being "freaked out"? Does he start hurting the car or jumping around or what?

I've never used a harness, but Grannie Annie taught us a trick she used for many years with rescue dogs -- the door gets closed on the leash to keep it and the dog in the back. I imagine a harness would do the same.

This doesn't help much if the issue is that he's eating the cushions. ;)
I use the harness too--for all three of mine. I started them out that way and they have always loved to ride in the car--

I started Murphy with the harness on his first trip to the vet and he does very well in the car already. Maybe it is because they don't feel confined and can see out etc.

This may not be any help for you at this point--but you might try it and see how it works.
Ron, by getting freaked out-heavy panting, pacing, and towards the end he tries to climb into my lap...on the freeway...at 60mph. You'd think he would settle in the car as he's been on many LONG road trips. Instead he just gets worse...hence the crate.

I used the crate, put a blanket over it and the rattle is not as bad. I need to put something in the crate on the pan because he slides around(he won't lay). He did start to whine a little at the end but I just started to sing louder so I couldn't hear him :D .

Someone at class said they would lend me their harness and I told them if it works I would buy it from them.
