Really irked about my grooming experience.

Okay I am not a difficult person when it comes to getting my sheepies groomed and honestly as long as they are clean and feel good I am fine with how they look. Well since getting my 3rd OES, who is just gorgeous if i do say so myself. I have been diligent about learning to properly groom him and have him on the table at least twice a week to line brush him. He has a full coat. I made an appointment to take him in to a groomer who has groomed him twice. I have been through my share of groomers, and honestly I just think they screw me because they just don't want to be bothered with the work it take to groom an OES. I spent two hours line brushing Bentley prior to taking him to the groomer. I dropped him off and had the groomer put him on the table (I brought a poodle comb with me) so I could show the groomer that he was brushed out and explain what I wanted done to him. I wanted him trimmed down with the longest blade on the body and then hand scissor the legs to blend in with the body. they did exactly that and he looks great. The problem is I signed a $95.00 contract. They called me three times to tell me he'd be longer than expected and when I finally got there to pick him up (dropped him off at 11:00, picked him up at 5:30). the price on the contract was scratched out and it said $115.00, then there was a $20.00 de-matting fee, and a $20.00 dirty dog shampoo fee for a specialty shampoo..... HUH?? For a total of $155.00. Now if they had called and told me that he was a lot more work then they had anticipated and there would be an extra cost I would have been fine with that. He was fully coated!! But they didn't do that. To top it all off, all the groomers were gone and they left the paying and checking out to the doggie daycare person who knew nothing!! I was so pissed! I feel like I'm caught between a rock and a hard spot as I need a good groomer but raising the cost over 50% with out a phone call!! That just doesn't seem ethical. Bentley was not dirty, although he was a bit oily due to the warm weather we've had and the long coat. My trainer and everyone I've spoken to said they just built up bogus fees due to the time it took to groom him..... Am I being ridiculous? I've been brewing over this for the last few days and I am really angry!! What should I do?

I agree with you that if they had told you when they called that it was more work than they anticipated and discussed a price increase at that time--and asked you if you agreed to the change in the contract--then the extra cost would have been agreed to by both of you.
But to change a contract to a different price and leave--that just doesn't sound right. Does the contract state that they can add fees after they start?

I had a great groomer for years--no problems at all and she hurt her wrist and had to quit grooming large dogs. After her there have been several and I ran into some situations similar to yours--but no one ever changed the price without my agreeing ahead of time and giving them the 'go' to do whatever. I went through about 5 different ones and was even charged an extra tax on water by one of them--(never heard that one before that time  )

With the current groomer--I used a different approach than ever before. She is a mobile groomer and was referred to me by another person. This time--I made an appointment for her to come and see the dogs, evaluate what the work would be by what I told her I wanted. She wasn't grooming the dogs that day--just came to meet them and evaluate. I had time to discuss with her the details that were important to me--shampoo and conditioner choice--brush out costs vs. clipping-what a grooming session included in way of nails, ears etc. I felt like we covered it all and then she was able to give me a price and even offered a discount because I had two.

She has been great--kept her word each time, grooms all 3 of my kitties and the two dogs.

I think you have a right to be mad--you were not treated right as a customer.

It seems to me that many groomers really do have the attitude that they are doing you a favor by allowing you to be a customer--at least that was my experience--I was happy to finally find someone who wanted customers for a change!
Lisa...I am so sorry about this groomer and a contract you signed. How long is the contract..two months? three months? Do you have to get him groomed once a month or twice a month per this contact???

If there is a time limit on the contract, then I think you can go to the owner, show a copy of the contract and politely demand that they honor the orginial contract. I would think the main reason for a contract is to freeze the price.

I woudn't let this go..this groomer needs to give you a refund or apply the overpayment to the next time you do to them.

If you really like this groomer and have decided to stay with her, I think you need to make sure thye know what to expect and keep the payment consistant...

I know I am very lucky to have a great groomer...I take Heart in at about 7AM and she is out by 11~~ When Heart get her 'summer cut' , Meghan scissor cuts her and does everything else ..for $85.00 (plus a very generous tip..I know a good thing when I see it...  ) BUT~~ I interviewed about 5 groomers before I decided on her. Chris, her boss use to show sheepdogs, so when I heard that, I knew Heart was in good hands. I have never paid over the price that was quoted to me 3 years ago, and I didn't sign a contract. (I think THIS is kinda over the top...IMO)

Let us know if or when you resolve this. They did WRONG~~~~~
When I said contract, it was just the piece of paper I signed when I drop him off with the price and what I wanted done to him, they changed it by adding $60.00 to the original cost of $95. I paid $155!! They could have called to discuss it with me but declined to do so. Even though they called 3 times to say he would be later than expected!!
This is exactly why we do our grooming ourselves now and, for the tricky stuff like scissoring, we drive 6 hours back to Amber, the girls' breeder. I am sure there are terrific ones out there, but generally speaking my opinion of groomers is very low.
Simply unacceptable to change the price without letting you know. I would go in and visit the groomer, bringing along the original bill and the whopper you ended up paying. Request a refund. If you don't get any satisfaction, ask for the manager. At this point, I am assuming that you don't plan on going back, and if that's the case, I would make a fuss.

I no longer take Oscar to the groomer for (his) health reasons, but what you were charged sounds crazy expensive to me. Oscar is a big boy, at 110 lbs, and my groomer charged $65 for a bath and a clip down with the longest guard. And I would drop him off at 9 a.m., and pick him up by noon, 12:30 p.m. at the latest. Of course I tipped well, and I got my entire neighborhood to take their dogs to my groomer, so maybe that's why I got such a great rate. :D

I would be fuming too......certainly not the way to treat a customer if you are looking for repeat business.

Laurie and Oscar
At the time you signed the contract, did you get/keep a copy? If you did, I would think you have some grounds to fight it. I personally would have written a check for the amount ONLY on the contract. Kinda sounds like extortion. The groomer may have done a good job BUT since the price change was never ok'd by you, I would NOT go back. What other bs charges will the add without your permission. To do such a thing is like holding the dog hostage. Just my opinion.............
Glad to know I'm not being crazy. I really liked this place but I am really angry. I really believe they do not want to groom old english sheepdogs, and Bentley is used to being on the table, he is on it all the time here at home.
I would not pay it. Lori grooms or myself & we charge about £30 to do the whole dog & £45 that is with a total wash
Yea,it sounds like you got ripped off. To scratch out the $95 and add $20 for ??, another $20 for dematting when you showed them he was matt free, and then another $20 for a specialty dirty dog shampoo...Yea, I would be questioning that.
Not a good deal. I would go talk with them...then based on what they say and if they adjust the bill....spread your story far and wide!...and loud!

I do my own grooming. Besides not liking to pay $$ for something like that, I also enjoy it.
I just did butt and feet (shaping and trimming pad hair) on Bond today, and then did a whole body scissors cut on Chewie after that. It only takes me about 2 hours - it's really not hard at all.
I wouldnt have given up without a fight! :D
I experienced that with groomer i took him to first. They wanted a whole lot of money and all i asked for was a bath and to trim around his eyes. Never again will i take him there, we dropped him off at 9am pick him up at 1pm, to find him in a cage barking, theyd shaved ALL his face. he looked terrible.
At least they did what you asked, but i agree. Grooming companies are too chargy, they pick little things to put on extra money. They charged us £50 for a bath and to make him look like a poodle! I was so angry, we dont mind paying that money to people if they do a good job and worked hard, but seriously they just shaved his face and bathed him! Then they told mom, hes aggressive so they put price up! Bloo is NOT aggressive thankyou lol. I would have been as angry as you are. ;)
I have been nervous to take bloo to any groomer after that experience, but i must admit im pretty cool about going to karen, she did great job, not over pricey and i know bloo isnt going to look like a poodle. When you find a good groomer stick with it.
I feel your anger xx sam
The most i have ever charged for anything with an old english was £50 that imcluded dematting, and done over 2 sundays!!

Have you spoke to the manager?
If you went in with a comb and they were with you then matts would of been found. Do that $20 is unjustified.
If he was having a bath anyway why charge an extra $20 for a different shampoo, surly the whitening shampoo would take more time?
And i would make a fuss about the groomer not being there to explain themselves
I think some of it depends on where you live with the pricing....

I pay $90 for Dahlia (It was $80, but, she is now heavier at 80lbs) she is considered a Large dog, so the price went up

I drop her off at 8am and pick her up whenever she is done---usually by 10:30-11am. (give or take)

They told me 2 visits ago that she was a bit matted with her coat transition and they worked on her for about 45 minutes longer and they weren't going to charge me.... But, if she was matted the next time, they would have to charge me $20.
They said they wouldn't charge me for the de-matting this time bec/ they wanted to just make me aware for the next visit.

At the next visit, there was no extra charge, but, I was prepared in case they did charge me..... they gave me fair warning as they should! Your groomer should have either called you or had told you about the extra charges for the next time and given those to you for free.... That would have been better business practice.

Now, my other sheepie (who is now at the rainbow bridge) was $120 each visit in a mobile grooming unit. I paid it and I know it was expensive, but, she was so patient with my senior dog and with her back/hip issues, that it was worth every dollar!

With Dahlia---she goes to a little brand new boutique near my house.... It is so "girly" it cracks me up!

They do a really good job w/ her, so I don't mind paying the $90 plus I give her specific groomer $20 cash each visit as a tip.
I know you can't tell by a photo, but this is Bentley just before I took him to the groomer. He is fully brushed out. I swear the groomers around here are so unschooled on how to run a business with ethics. I run my own children's entertainment company and I have a signed contract before I do a show. A standard birthday party is $250 for my area (more if I have to travel). I love what I do and honor my agreement with the upmost professionalism. What this groomer did to me is like me saying to a parent that hires me, "hey you had two bratty children and 4 that popped their balloons so my price is now $325.00. LOL!

I'd march back to the groomer and let them know how you feel and demand (nicely, being mean or angry gets you no where)a refund or a credit for next time. And if you don't get what you asked for, tell them you will not be back and you will inform all of your friends and neighbors not to use this groomer because they are lacking professionalism and don't honor their original agreements
