Stinky Angel Wings

Kaj and I picked up the bunnies on their return trip from neutering/spaying on Saturday. Dropping them off at the bunny rescue we decided to head home. The crates were full of hay so the stuff was all over my car and I planned on going to a gas station to vaccum it out the next day. Too tired to do it that day as the 4 hr round trip was exhausting and I had all my furkids at home that needed attending to.

The next day, Kaj and I were supposed to go to the Canadian border as he had to renew his work visa.We planned on cleaning the car before we headed out. Then ...we recieved an emergency call. A stray cat with a broken leg was finally captured - however this cat happened to be on a remote part of a mountain - 2 hrs away. Kaj and I decided we had to help as the thoughts of this poor cat who had evaded capture for many months and now injured couldn't wait as we had to get him. I had given my word several months before when he was spotted as a tiny starving kitten but then he disappeared and we thought the outcome wasn't good as it snowed heavily during the winter. Now he showed up again and the homeowner called me.
Luckily a wonderful cat rescue offered to take him and had vets on location but only until 2 pm if we could get him there that fast. Unfortunately this cat shelter was located in another municipality (another 2 hrs drive). It meant we had to delay our plans to go to the border and "head for the hills".
Kitty showed his appreciation by spraying and urinating in the car. You'all know how wonderful that smell is! All my guys are spayed/neutered so I haven't had the pleasure of smelling an un-neutered male cat for sometime. EWWWWWW! :sidestep:

Today we were going out the door again to a car detailing place to get the car washed and while I won't get into it but my realtor wanted to meet with us asap and we were once again delayed...no time to clean the car so we just headed to the border (WITH THE WINDOWS ROLLED DOWN!) and gagging. Okay once we get the paperwork okay'd we'll go asap to get the car cleaned!

OH NO! I missed the tiny turnoff to Canadian Immigration at the Canadian/US border and unable to turn around due to road diversions and cars behind me...we were stuck in the lineup crossing into the US. 1 hr later in the lineup we told the US border guard we made a mistake as we planned on turning around. As is the custom we had to park our car (where normally people have their cars searched) and then go through US Immigration. (took 2 hrs) and then once convinced we were honest people but probably had a horrible stinky smelly car that was full of straw/hay bits and not anything else.   I can only imagine what the search dog smelled! They allowed us on our way again...calling it going around the flagpole as one guard accompanied us to where we could cross back into a lineup entering Canada.

another 1 wait in the lineup ....then back to Canadian Immigration (another 1 wait) but at least they didn't search the car again as it had just been searched by the US guards. Kaj's documents were all in order and he gets to stay for another 3 yrs (his work contract) in Montreal. He leaves in a mere 8 days and I'll eventually accompany him once we have monies freed up.

So while we both earned our angel wings this weekend.....there are very stinky ones! Ewww still can't get that nasty smell out of my nose...

Next week, Happy the Clown will be making animal bunny balloons at an yearly Easter event for a gazillion kids with proceeds going to animal rescue (Also promised to do this months ago before we got the news that Kaj's job ended and he accepted the tranfer in Montreal - 2500 miles away). So our last weekend together he and I will be "working for animals"

After that, I'm going to hang up my angel wings for a while as I'll be figuring out the logistics of transferring all my critters 2500 miles and eventually following him to Montreal. That may not happen for a few months but at least I'll be rested.

My gosh, that was quite the time!! :cow:
I'm hoping this was not too cold of weather so you could not freeze driving w/ the windows down...and hope you finally got your vehicle cleaned and de-stunk out as well.

And good luck with getting Kaj moved and of course YOU with all the gang!!
Have you found housing yet?
I love your posts, felt like I was right along for the ride.

Hope you do get some rest and things go very well for you and Kaj. You both have angel wings even if they are a bit stinky.
I can't imagine the logistics involved in moving the "family." yes, you'll need time to plan........
Thanks guys!

I stopped looking at MLS sites in Montreal as we both saw the most perfect home for us and all the animals. It had room for the bunnies, cats, chickens, guinea pigs and dogs. Nice large shady backyard with tall hedges and I read up the bylaws of the area. Yup...perfect. But.....we can't buy a house until Kaj has completed his 3 month probation first (although technically it's not a brand new job but a transfer) but banks may get picky as I won't have a job when I get there, he will be temporarily be the sole bread winner. So we have to wait for approval - then I'll fly to Monteal and pick out a house and then probably have to wait for 60 -90 days possession.

Only then can I transfer the animals over as we need a house for them to go to. Since he will be "there" and me "here" I have the joy of packing up the entire contents of the house and arranging transport for all the animals who are able to fly. The rest will be transported via me driving them across Canada in a Motor Home. (ah well it's always been on my bucket list to drive across the country on an adventure) Of course I was 18 when I first thought it would be fun.

If there is a glitch and I'm delayed in my travel plans I may have to stay put for another 9-12 months as I won't be able to drive across the mountains in the Winter. Hopefully, everything falls into place and I don't have to stay that length of time, but I'm staying optomistic as we stuck to our guns that no a single pet will get left behind.
I say just strap on the angel wings and fly to Montreal :D
Now that's a plan Cindy!!

If any of you big mega lotto winners are reading this a private plane would really help out! :plead:

As for that kitty, just had an update from the rescue that took him in. It turns out it's not a broken leg but smashed pelvis and the injury is old as he's lost muscle tissue. They couldn't imagine how this poor thing managed to survive on a mountain with such an injury. I am glad we were able to help in some small way as now he's in safe hands.
What I mean in safe hands is they are consulting a specialist and trying to see if they can fit him with a pelvis plate. I'll know more within the next few days.

Egads....forget what I said earlier about hanging up the angel wings as they asked if I could possibly foster a few medical cats as they just had a emergency with 25 seized cats and are desperate for temp foster homes. This is one rescue that I never fostered before but after soul searching, I decided that while I have the room...at the inn...well there is always room for one more.
The SPCA in my area is closing it's doors at the end of the month and all animals there are being transferred to other shelters. I don't know what will happen to the ones that will fall through the cracks as a result. However, that's another story.

So no rest for the wicked for now
