Information on the OES tree skirt I made

Some of you have asked for a pattern of the tree skirt I made from Laurel's artwork or indicated that you would be willing to buy one.

It took me way more hours to make than I anticipated so I will not be making another one nor do I have a pattern but I can tell you what I did for anyone trying to make one for themselves.

What I can HINT at is that for those of you who may be traveling at the end of May there could be an opportunity to get your hands on one at the same time helping OES Rescue financially.

Here are the basic instructions.

I took the picture of Laurel's artwork and blew it up on the copy machine. Then I separated the picture into each dog and the sled. Then I blew them up to the size I thought would look good on a tree skirt. I can't remember but I am thinking I blew up the original picture and then I think I blew up each section by 165% but don't quote me on that because it was about two months ago.

I then cut out each dog and the sled and put them on a white background. Then I ran them on cardstock several times so that I could cut up the dog into various parts. I used heat-n-bond interfacing (I guess) on my different fabrics and then I was able to iron it on to the material. It did not really stick entirely with the several layers by the time I got it onto the skirt.

Anyway, once I had the materials with the heat and bond I used the cardstock to trace the dogs or pieces of dogs onto the appropriate fabrics. After I cut the pieces out of the fabric then I would applique each dog on the skirt.

This is probably confusing but I used a piece of white for the entire shape of each dog - I had a grey body on top of that and one or two dark legs on top of each white as well. I also cut a white head on each and put that on top of the entire white body. The only part that wasn't two layers are the white legs and paws.

As far as appliquing I would do the grey body first - then the white paws then I would iron on the head and applique that last.

I should tell you there is quite a bit of detail that is not evident in the picture - but you can click on the picture above to enlarge it and then move your mouse around to see the detail described. Or you can click on my photo album and enlarge the picture from there to get the best close up.

For example - besides hand embroidery which I taught myself to do just for this project - I used grosgain ribbon for the dog's harnesses and for the most of the brown on the sled. I also used a d-ring for the harness ring and a string that is not tied down for the rope. I wanted to give it extra dimension. The packages are outlined in silver metalic and the snow flakes have metalic thread in them. There are silver flecks in the material I used for snow.

I apologize because I am not much of a seamstress more of a mathematician. So this whole idea came to mind in my head as to the most of the materials I wanted to use before I ever put it into play. I never dreamed that it would take me as long to do as it did. It was supposed to be a two weekend project - LOL. Of course, some of the problem was that my machine kept jamming while working the applique. It truly was a labor of love but I was definitely sick of it towards the end. I thought it would keep me busy while I mended towards the end of winter.

Sadly, I have another project in my head that probably won't come to fruition because I am in the height of training Harry. My first love - which I don't have enough time or financial resources for even though I am totally dedicated to it. Not to mention the aggravation of everyday life such as jobs that get in the way.

Thanks to everyone for the compliments.

If you will PM me your address, I will send you one :) Im planning on ordering another batch from my printer soon anyway, as I wound up handing these out to customers when I had an overflow of them, and it turned out to be a popular thing.

:cup: Just a small reminder folks: I gave Judi permission to use my design, and I am now officially giving ALL OF YOU permission to use this design for personal (non-commercial) use...but when adapting any artist's work, keep in mind that it is courteous to ask about personal use, and legally required to ask permission for commercial use. :cup:

No complaints to Judi AT ALL by the way  She did everything right!
Laurel, I will need to PM you for another card.
I used mine on the 2009 Christmas Box but I just love looking at it.
It is such an awesome design.

I can't understand why all of Alaska doesn't adorn their walls with Sheepdog artwork.
That design would also look cute on a winter sweatshirt. :D It's adorable!
It's a beautiful design that would look great in several mediums. I love it!

I am amazed at your talent and the work you put in for such a fantastic piece! Way to go sheepiemommy/Judi!!!

While admiring it I won't be making one as I only have a 1 ft or metal tree I use in my household but if I go back to reg size trees I may try it in the future.

Raven - your generousity in sharing your art piece and giving permission is worth praise too. Sheesh no one ever ask me and I see kids copying my stick men all the time! :O)

The most common way for this to come up, believe it or not, is in the form of tattoos 8O  I always tell people that if they love a piece of my work enough to put it on their body, then of course they have my blessing! Its when they start stripping in my booth to show them to me that it can get a bit...disturbing
I put the card in a plain frame and have had it in my office since I received it. It sits next to the cardboard VW bus. :tree:

But Laurel, have any of those stripping down been hot bodied men? :lmt:

Oh never mind, they probably wouldn't be sporting cute Sheepdog tattoos.
