New thyroid problems

So Mattie went to the vet Saturday to check her thyroid levels after 6 weeks on her new dose. Now it's too high. So they ordered a new medication with a different dose which should be here in a few days.
Now for the behavior questions.
When we first upped her meds she was so playful with Frankie, now she's back to being snappy and down right cranky with him.

She seems tired, she doesn't want to get up to go out at night for the last time.

And when we go to daycare on Fridays she is so so excited to go, then when we get there I can not get her out of the car. She wont stand up or anything. We actually had to push her out of the car last week, and I only did that because it was too warm outside to leave her in the car while I was at work.
Sometimes she doesn't want to get out when we get home either.

I'm stumped. Can her meds be causing this? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I think the meds could be the cause. I know before we started my guy on Soloxine he was getting nasty, tired all the time, not playful...just not himself. I could "see" it in his eyes. The medciation helped wonders and he is back to his old self.

So, if a low thryoid effects their behavir, I assume a hyper thryoid can as well. Did you ask the Vet if this could be the reason? Whcih meds are you going on?
I think it's the Soloxine.
I didn't mention it because she is also going through have a infected anal gland. Her antibiotics are almost finished for that.

When thyroid levels are too high you can see aggression issues and behavior changes... other symptoms too.
Hoping the doctor will get her stabilized soon. :crossed:
Just today, I went to my vet for a re-check with my aged 19 yr old cat who has Hyperthyroidism (another cat has Hypothryroidism).

I know the situation is different as I'm dealing with felines and you with Mattie, but I'd be interested in learning what you find out. Mama Kat has been on her meds for aprox 1 month with no noticeable difference as she's continued to be thin and lethargic. However, the vet explained that while that may be the case, the protocol for levels in cats is between 20 and 60. MK's was at 140..in a nutshell off the charts. However, she explained that while there is no noticable difference that is apparent to me - her levels may now be at 75 after taking the meds..so slowly going down but still above what they should be. So improving but not yet at the normal level. A bloodtest was taken today to confirm this and I will get the results in a few days.
With my other feline who is Hypothryroid - what seemed to be the most beneficial was a special diet.

I'm still fairly new about the effects of these two kinds of problems with the Thyroid but one thing I found very interesting from the readings I've done is:
Some studies have shown that heavy fish diets appear to be contributing factors. Now how strange that seemed to me as fish oil and fish I thought was healthy. In several researches done it was found that fish - especially salmon is very high in toxins and has a direct affect on the thyroid if consumed in large amounts. I did give my cats a lot of salmon in their diets as it was great for their coats but now I avoid it. Anyhow I may be way off topic and not adding much to your post but thought I'd mention this.

As for the different pills given I'm not that familiar with the various types but I'd love to share anything I find out with you and vice versa. Then again, this disease may be totally different in cats compared to dogs.

Let us know what you find out.

We have had a very successful result with the Soloxine. My dog takes one and one half pill, twice a day. I try to keep it every 12 hours as thyroids level will begin to rise or lower after 12 hours.. So we give in the Am before breakfast and at dinner time. I actually have to write down when I give so I know the times. I can't remember all this stuff without a little book!

The infected anal glads I'm sure are uncomfortable as well. Hope things improve for you soon...
Hi,

I was at the vet office today and as my vet predicted, my Mama Kat's levels were down to 83 from her previous 140. *correction from my previous post: A felines levels should be between 10-30. She has now adjusted her meds (adding 1/2 pill daily) so her dosage is 1 1/2 pills daily. Her meds are Trapazole (sp?)

Lisa, I realize the my cat and Mattie are different but I think the philosphy of how to treat may be the same. A lot of it is trial and error according to my vet as to finding that correct dosage. I'm still on that path as my MK will also be retested in a few weeks.

My thoughts are with you and Mattie. Sending her my love.

Marianne
