Mattie has an anal gland infection

I had posted a couple of weeks ago about Mattie licking her rear end alot. We had her anal gland expressed (I think thats what you call it) a few weeks ago and they said one was full but it was just normal stuff. Still licking, so I had her PT vet look at it Monday night. She thought her right gland was full again. So this time it was full of blood and pus (Sorry) she was really crying this time when she expressed them. So I called our vet in the morning and got a prescription called in for antibiotics. The gave her Cipro.
Is there anything I have to watch out for. I have never had a dog get an infection in their anal glands. We have a vet appt Saturday to have her thyroid tested again so I'm sure he'll check them out again.

It was probably from having them expressed.... I have never had to do that with any of my dogs, ever. I think groomers should leave them alone, and vets should only do it if need be. If they need to be done my guess is their diet isn't quite right, firm stools should keep them clear naturally.
Hope it clears up quickly and she's feeling better soon.
I love the conversations we can have here.
She has very firm poop thats why I was surprised she needed them expressed.
Pumpkin added to her food every feeding time.

Thank you Stacey, I agree. Too much pinching back there by rushed groomers. The anal sacs are sorta like skunk scent pouches.....dog excrete their own "musk" when excited or marking (beyond urine)..at least wild dogs, not so much these modern guys. Naturally small openings, obesity, poor muscle tone or seborrhea excretions can cause problems for the sacs. Yes, usually soft food is a cause as it fails to press upon the sacs causing them to drain a bit with each poop. Curious her poops are firm and she has this problem.

Now you have a job of keeping the bum clean, I'm sure the dog wants you to clean and maybe even warm wet compress back there.

I hope Mattie feels better soon!!
I'll be a 3rd - I never have had a SINGLE dog with anal gland problems either....and I have had a lot of dogs in my life!!! :cow:
But no one ever has touched those glands on a regular basis, so there must be something to all this over-use by groomers, etc. :?

Poor Mattie - I hope she feels better. She seems to live at the vet's. :(
I just want to make sure I didn't post anything wrong, the groomer didn't touch her anal glands. Just the vet did because they weren't emptying.

I have one for yall--- A couple of times while Ryleigh was asleep her glands kinda expressed themselves. ??? The first time it was alot and a mess and very stinky, the second time (about a year apart) it was just a little spot on the floor. She doesnt even wake up when it happens. But several times she will let out this strong fishy smell then start licking herself like crazy but we dont see anything, just smell it. Is this also her glands?

Yep, that's it.
She must have some loose sphincter muscles back there!

Our Maggie does it from the stress of nail trimming...we learned after the 1st time to do it outdoors! 8O
Ah, good thing you took her to the Vet. I had a samoyed once who had an infected anal glad. I was young at the time and had no idea about dogs, never mind anal glands 8O The dog ended up having to have surgery!

Good thing you found the problem. Hope the Cipro works. By the way, Cipro is a strong antibiotic. Be sure to give with food to avoid tummy upset and if your dog tolerates it, a bit of yogurt will help keep the good bacteria in tact...Hope she feels better soon!
I inherited anal gland mess with my recent rescue. Never had any issues with them with my previous dogs. Mo, however was scheduled for removal when we got him. The surgery took longer than expected because the duct that normally empties them had so much scartissue it no longer emptied. They removed both while messing down there. He has recovered beautifully and has only the funky shaved hairstyle as proof of the surgery -- hopefully gone soon as the hair grows!

Accordong to the vet, anal glands are like human appendix - no real use, but sometimes a heck of a lot pain and bother. Hopefully your baby's gland simply settles down and is not to heard from again.

Salla.

This is really a strange line of posts but I too have had my sheepie express his glands while sleeping. It would happen in the middle of the night. Believe it or not the smell would wake me up, since he slept on his bed directly beside my bed and directly under where my nose would be. He had no clue. :twitch:
I would get him up and sure enough would be a wet stain on his bed cover. Would get a clean cover for his bed and put him in the tub to clean up the butt (such fun at wee hours of the night  ). Ya they were trying times but to tell the truth I would go thru every moment of it just to have Cooper by my side again. :hearts:

I never heard of anal gland excretions or problems before having sheepies. We had smaller dogs, a variety of kinds but no sack issues. You learn something new all the time I guess???

Hoping Mattie's butt is getting better.
Emma has one anal gland that is not anatomically positioned like most dogs... the owner of one of her littermates (who lives in another state) was told the same thing about her dog. So this may be why they don't express properly. I can tell when Emma's needs to be emptied... she'll start turning her head around to the right and look at her fanny. It must be causing her discomfort. It's always full when she does this... the other one is often empty. And she's always got firm poo too.

I found a grain-free food helped Panda who had to be expressed every 2-3 weeks or she'd be scooting a few times a day on the kitchen rug. 8O But it has to be the higher protein... 32% was what had worked for her. She had been good up I tried a 24% protein grain-free food for a few weeks recently. She's back on Canidae grain-free... hoping we'll see the same results. Not all grain-free foods are created equal...
