OES and... my zoo

So, I caved in, and finally got another dog after my beloved Boston Terrier passed away a few years ago. Amelia (MiMi) comes home in a few short weeks, and I am freaking STOKED.

The thing is, I'm curious how she'll do with our ferrets. Will they look like crunchy treats to her you think? I can certainly restrict her access to them, but the weasels are deadly curious about everything, and they will want to meet her in a big way. We've also got three cats, which I'm not worried about - they have been around dogs before, and I pity the fool who tangles with them. The cats and ferrets do just dandy together, the ferrets actually whooped the cats butts pretty quickly, and now simply tolerate them.

I've never had a dog this large. Ever. I am so super excited about her, but am fretting a little bit about our zoo.

I think it's great you're getting a puppy and congrats btw!!! Your avatar is the CUTESSSSST ...looks so happy and ready to go :)

...but what I mean is, I really really think most of them are super innocent as pups so don't have a hate for small creatures. We had 2 cats and it was the cats that had to get used to the new beast that wouldn't stop jumping around and breathing on them. There will be adjustments but all on your present animals. Thank God OES' start out small. :) Give it a month (at least) and they'll all be best friends. You'll just have to look out for that BIG paw.
Welcome and congrats on your new pup! Would love to see lots of pictures!!

We have a new puppy and he and the cats are getting along very well. The cats play with him and when they have had enough they leave or jump to a higher level and taunt him- :D
Puppies adapt pretty well to most anything. If introduced to the ferrets and cats at a young age they usually end up friends.

I don't know too much about ferrets but I would take the meetings with eyes and noses and go from there. Don't leave them alone together until they are like cement.

When we got Simon at 8weeks we had a bitey cat. We were nervous the first few weeks. He followed that cat around and pawed at the cat and to our surprise the cat did not hurt him. I think it was the "baby" factor. The cat saw him coming and just vacated the area.
Intro as a puppy will help a lot. Most accept pretty much any existing house pet when they grow up w/ them.

Most OES are not high prey drive...that does help.
Our family's OES all loved my granddaughter's little guinea pig - and my Chewie and Princess really, really liked each other. :hearts:
Princess "pruning" Chewie's foot hairs :D -

On the other hand, my son's VERY high prey drive Min Pin tried to eat her! 8O
Size had nothing whatsoever to do with it. :?

We also have several dogs (various sizes), a cat, birds, free range chickens, pony, sheep and llamas.....and they all get along. :roses:
Does anyone ever watch Mark Marone? He loves all animals and he has a menagerie you wouldn't believe, they all seem to get along very well.
just be careful about the introduction. 8)
